Follow-Up Friday – March 4, 2016

March 4, 2016 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Smile – February 28, 2016

Chocolate Labrador

Emma said, “We make ourselves right at home no matter where we are.”

That’s awesome Emma, I think you girls probably get out and travel a lot more than we do, which may be one of the reasons you relax so easily.

Sand Spring Chesapeakes asked, “So cute, is your mom still living with you?”

Yes, my mom has a small apartment in the downstairs of our house, so we used to visit a least two times per day. Now that Sampson is not doing the stairs, I leave the dogs upstairs when I go. I hope that in a couple of months, he’ll be feeling well enough to go back downstairs.

Monika said, “Sam is always looking for any opportunity to score a nice comfy warm bed, be it on an actual bed or on the sofa (the proof is always in the messed up pillows). That dog is shameless. Clearly, the D-dog is no ordinary fool. 😉”

Oh Sam! Does he ‘steal’ your spot on the bed when you get up to use the loo?

Making Sure Your Dog’s #TummyWorks

TummyWorks

Thank you to everyone who commented and shared this post on Facebook, please make sure you tagged either me personally, or the HLAD page, because WordPress doesn’t give me the option of seeing who shared it. I have noticed a couple of you have already.  And if you haven’t entered for a chance to try this awesome new product out, there’s still plenty of time left to enter!

Jan K said, “My hubby would probably kill me if I added another supplement to the mix right now.”

I hear that Jan! I need a list just to keep track of everything for my guys!

Jan asked, “Are we disqualified if we don’t have digestion problems?”

Absolutely not! Why wait until you have problems? A probiotic is a great supplement for any diet!

Dianne said, “I’ve recently read about the importance of adding probiotics and enzymes to our pets’ diet, particularly as they age.”

That’s absolutely right! Personally, I feel like they’re important at almost any age. They help to regulate the ‘good’ bacteria in the gut and I think as we age it becomes even more important as the body goes through the aging process.

Oh The Places You’ll Go – Dr. Seuss Day

Dog peeing on post

This was just such a silly post. It’s been rolling around in my head for the last couple of years, but last year I missed Dr. Seuss day! I watch the places my dogs potty and it makes me laugh, so I snap the photos.

Caren Gittleman (who publishes her own tribute to Dr. Seuss every year) said, “This was soooooooooooooooooo fabulous that it needs to be YOUR tradition to post this EVERY YEAR!!!!”

I’m glad you liked it! I loved yours too! (You guys can read Caren’s HERE.) I like the idea of running it annually, BUT I do have quite a few more photos, so maybe I’ll change it a teensy bit next time. 🙂

It’s a Small World – Barks and Bytes

Cupcake said, “Mom had that idea in her head for Sampson – to drive him somewhere and THEN do the 8 minute walk for a change of scenery. Your brain told you the same thing as hers.”

Great minds. 🙂 I was actually thinking of driving him up to the OTHER entrance to the park, so he could get some sniffing done on the upper trails. I think he’d enjoy that.

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s Mom said, “And I love looking up during our bedtime walk through the yard and seeing all the stars in the deep-navy-blue sky. Even the clouds are pretty at that time of night.”

I love that too. And with the upcoming time change (WHY? WHY? Just do away with that stupid Daylight Savings Time!) I’ll be back to seeing the that on our morning walks again. At least for a couple of months.

Beth said, “No matter how hard I’ve tried, I cannot make myself a morning person–especially if it means dragging myself out of bed before the sun is even up to be able to catch that sunrise.”

Believe it or not, it’s gotten easier as I’ve gotten older. I think it’s mostly because I don’t sleep as well as I used to.

Sue said, ” My preference is sunrise. I’m an early riser and when Jeffie was a little puppy, he and I would go outside (for him to pee right away) and sit on the back porch steps and watch the sun rise together. Sweet memories…I’ve been wondering… so, so glad to see Sampson has gotten to go to the park! Hmm…wonder which he would choose: a walk in the park or that steak? 😉”

THAT is a sweet memory Sue. As for Sampson he says both!

Dachshund Nola said, “I’m definitely more of a sunset type of girl – not only do I despise getting up at sunrise, I find sunset lighting to be so much more intense and vivid.”

I do love me a vibrant sunset. Here is a photo I took off the dock of the house we rented in St. Petersburg, FL, when my daughter got married. It was our last night in Fl. October 2005.

ST PETERSBURG FL - SUNSET

It is one of my favorite sunset photos. Not touched up at all.

Julie said, “This reminds me of my Daisy. She hurt her back in her later years and the doctor said no walking or running and it was something we did every.single.day. But she had medicine and rested and one day we were sitting on the porch and she looked so depressed. Like it was no life for her without going on the trail. So I put her in the car and drove to the trail. It was only 1 mile and I drove so slow and the minute we got out she was SO happy.”

What a sweet memory! It takes so little to make them happy and they have no understanding of why their world has changed, if we can do something sweet like that, why not?

Well that’s it for me folks! Don’t forget to enter our TummuyWorks giveaway! Catch ya on the flip.

Follow-Up Friday – February 26, 2016

February 26, 2016 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions, and generally just wrap up my week.

You Make Me Laugh – February 21, 2016

Sampson and Delilah

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s mom said, “With Callie and Shadow it was fairly easy; but adding Ducky to the mix made it nearly impossible, and taking Callie out of the mix didn’t make it any easier. So, guess who the instigator is. 🐶”

Oh yes, I don’t think you call her the little demon dog for nothing!

Emma said, “We can do it, but rather than both looking the same direction, we prefer to have one look right and one look left. It really drives the mom mad!”

I love how you roll that way Emma, I bet your mom does too. 🙂

Jan said, “It’s a study in synchronized avoiding the camera. It’s an Olympic event.”

It should be. Maybe I’ll have to save that for the next Canine Olympics? 🙂

Monika said, “That’s a rhetorical question, right? Whenever I even try to focus a camera on him, Sam seems to cast a longing look over his shoulder in the opposite direction. Stupid dog. 😉”

Ha ha, he reminds me of Delilah, who usually walks up and shoves her face in the camera, or turns away. Sampson usually just gets the ‘let’s get this over with’ look on his face.

Taryn said, “Wilson totally “gets” the super-model thing (although going deaf makes it a tad harder), but Jimmy hates looking into the big scary eye of the camera. Sometimes HE. JUST. WON’T. LOOK. That’s why I have so many more nice photos of Wilson.”

LOL it’s frustrating, isn’t it? I treasure those good photos of Delilah, as they are fairly rare, although I have to say, as she ages she really has gotten better.

Julie said, “I can get Cocoa’s picture if she is exhausted. Or if she is sleeping. Or if I surprise her but once she sees I am trying to take pictures she will NOT look at the camera. So I have to be quick!!”

She’ll get better! Delilah used to be like that.

Misty Shores Chesapeakes said, “I get them all set up turn to walk away and the minute I stoop down to take the photo one them inevitably starts to walk toward me.”

LOL whoever said working with multiple dogs was easy, never worked with our dogs. 😉

Elaine said, “It’s hard enough to get Haley to cooperate sometimes, I can’t imagine getting two or more pups to get excited during photo shoots. I think I like this photo better though because it makes you wonder what’s happening off to the side.”

Yes, they don’t always cooperate, which makes the times they do so much sweeter. I like the way it makes you wonder too. When my grandson was 10 months old we did a photo shoot with the dogs. My grandson was in a rocking chair wearing a Santa hat and the dogs were sitting on either side of side of him. My husband opened the blind to get more light in and they all turned at the same time. It’s still on of my favorite photos.

Finding the Beauty in Nature

The moon setting on Sampson's walk yesterday morning.

The moon setting on Sampson’s walk.

Hailey and Zaphod said, “I enjoy the early morning walks. I have been bummed the last 2 mornings that it has been too cold to walk. Sigh!”

We walk no matter how cold it is out. We just bundle up well and sometimes we shorten the walks, but I’ve found the dogs really need to get out. 🙂 I’m sorry you haven’t been able to get your walks in.

Emma said, “Getting out in the cold and dark in the morning is the hard part, but once you are out it is so peaceful, and best of all…no other fools are out!”

Yup, you nailed it Emma. I love the quiet beauty and the sounds of the world waking up.

All Things Collie asked, “That was a nice surprise! You probably already explained, but why are you walking them so early? Do you switch them sometimes? (So Sampson can see the sunrise and Delilah the setting moon?)”

We walk early to help avoid encounters with other dogs. Typically Sampson goes first, but if there are days that he wants to sleep in, I take Delilah. 🙂

Dachshund Nola said, ” You could not pay me enough to walk (or wake up) before the sun is out. I much prefer walking at night!”

I have walked them at night and I just prefer the mornings. 🙂 Waking up is hard, but once I’m up and going, it’s all good.

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s Mom said, “Cardinals and blue jays are usually not afraid of people and other animals, even cats. I saw a blue jay dive-bomb a cat one day when I first moved down here…I don’t remember the exact circumstances, but I remember cheering the bird on for defending itself. The cat took off like a bat out of hell! ”

Oh my! Did you record it? I recorded a cat catching a chipmunk once. 😀

Sandspring Chesapeakes said, “You are so welcome!!!! and you know it was the darn postal service wrecking that bag of treats, lol. I took the broken ones and put in a dish for gman and gave you a brand new bag. Can’t ship anything without it getting broken! I’m glad you like the leash, I too like them because they are thin and can put in your pocket.”

See, you shouldn’t have told me that! I was impressed as hell thinking how clean your floors were because there was no dog hair in there. 🙂 Yes, the leashes are awesome. Most days I have it coiled lightly and loosely in my pocket while he walks slowly beside me.

Monika said, “Magic is everywhere…we just have to look closely though sometimes that’s hard to do when our minds are running like 60 and 9 miles down the road focused the things we ‘need’ to do during the day.”

Amen sister. We’re so darn busy, we forget to stop and look.

Elaine said, “Beautiful images. I never really liked birds either but now that I’m older, I do notice them more and think some are beautiful. Does that mean I’m an old lady before my time?”

Nah, I think as we mature we learn to stop and find the beauty in things.

Where We Are – Barks and Bytes

I can see why House Elves have an aversion to this.

Thank dog one of those tests doesn’t require wearing a sweatshirt.

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s Mom said, ” Both our regular vet and the surgeon told us that most dogs do end up tearing the second ACL within 12-18 months of the first one due to the imbalance of the weight distribution during the first recovery.”

I had heard that as well, but Sampson’s surgeon said he didn’t subscribe to that, but if you think about it, it makes sense. After he fully tore it, it was two weeks of walking on that leg and compensating with the other one, not to mention the recovery time after surgery.

Cupcake said, “I agree with Sampson – tests and missed meals are no way to enjoy life.”

I knew you’d understand the missed meals Cupcake. 😉

Taryn said, “The trauma of repeated vet visits isn’t how I would want my dogs to spend their golden years. I hear about dogs that are OK(even happy) at the vets but mine never have been. And surgery and all it’s pain is a very tough choice. Just love Sampson and live in the moment with him.”

Sampson LOVES our vet, when I told him where he was going, he pulled me through the gate, Even so, I’m sure being surrounded with all the sights, sounds and smells that he’s not used to, is stressful when he’s left there.

Emma said, “Health and senior dogs is a scary thing. Katie has her good days and her bad days. We have our vet check next week. We will be seeing if her heart murmur is the same or has worsened. Right now she is having not so great days again with walking and falling, but every day is a gift and a new day. We treasure each day with her.”

You are so right Emma. Treasure each and every day.

Jan K said, “We really are a lot alike, aren’t we? I would have made the exact same decisions you have.”

We are and it’s one of the reasons I LOVE your posts when you talk about decisions you make for your pets. It’s like a kindred spirit. 🙂

2 Brown Dawgs said, “I probably would have done the blood test. Even if I wasn’t going to treat, I would want to know.”

I totally get where you’re coming from. But since I’m struggling with his aging to start with, I know that I would be a wreck if I found out something bad. Three years ago, I’d probably have done the test, but I’ve been digesting this for over a month now and my gut is telling me no. 🙂

Well that’s it for me folks, thanks for joining me and for all your love and support. Have a great weekend.

Follow-Up Friday – February 19, 2016

February 19, 2016 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s Follow-Up Friday, the post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions, and generally just wrap up my week.

Happy Valentine’s Day

2-14-16-1 Not much to say here, huh? We all just wished each other a nice day. 😉  I hope yours was full of love.

Well THAT Gets The Heart Rate Up

Delilah's Arch Enemy

Delilah’s Arch Enemy

Taryn Tipton said, “Jimmy has the same reaction to butt sniffing plus little man’s complex. I guess you get a face full of licorice in his case. As to the balaclava, it doesn’t go well with morning breath either.”

Hahaha, I breath through my nose, so I didn’t have the morning breath issue, but I can see how that would deter me from a balaclava.

Emma said, “We have two mean dogs on the corner behind us. They stopped wearing their fence collars at one point and would come out after us. Mom was not amused.”

It’s not amusing. It’s frustrating and it can be very scary too. Not to mention the fact that someone could get hurt!

Beth said, “I just got one of those things for cold days, too–I can’t wear glasses with it because my breathing makes them fog up and then I can’t see a thing. If you still want one of your own, I found one for like $5 on Amazon and it has all kinds of adjustable things to make it fit better.”

Thank you for that. I’m still on the fence, but I’ll keep it in mind. But if I don’t wear my glasses I can’t see. 🙂 How do you manage?

Lauranne asked, “Aww is it wrong that I think the arch enemy is kinda sweet for doing as he was told?”

No honey, not at all, in fact I was quite pleased that he listened. I would have hated to have to shoot him with my pepper blaster. 🙁

Jan K said, “It reminds me of the time the neighbor’s German shepherd came barreling across the street at me and Luke…scared the crap out of me because I had no idea how that was going to go! I think it took at least an hour for my heart rate to get back to normal.”

Thankfully the dog didn’t charge at us, so my heart rate slowed down by the time we finished our walk. I can only imagine how terrifying that must have been for you.

Julie said, “Sometimes I think it must be so funny if anyone is watching me when I am out with Cocoa. We can get ourselves in some funny situations for sure.”

Ain’t that the truth! Sometimes I think if anyone was just watching me juggling the leashes because my dogs keep switching sides on me. LOL

Dachshund Nola said, “One of my biggest concerns with 10lb Nola is off leash dogs coming up to use. She’d be so easy to injury.”

Yes, that’s concerning to me too, we’ve had little dogs charge us and I have thought, my God, all she has to do is grab it and shake it and it’s all over.

Alexa88 said, “I’m all that plus a bag of chips so don’t mess with me… a face full of chocolate… i get that it means she can be a badass but still had me laughing.”

Excellent, that’s it exactly what I intended for it to do. 🙂

Misty Shores Chesapeakes said, “Had a dog do that once and the owner just stood in the door as I was trying to put myself between my dogs and the one approaching us as I am yelling at the dog to “GET” The dog seemed friendly but a strange dog approaching me with my two on leash may not have fared well. The part that made me mad was the owner just standing there watching and not calling her dog back, some people are clueless!”

Does that not piss you off? I had that one guy whose dog came charging us at the park and I was screaming and swearing at him. The dogs sniffed and there was no snarking but then the asshole said, “See, it’s okay.” No, actually it’s not okay, you have no idea what MY dogs might do. Or if I have an injured or fearful dog.

Some people are assholes.

The Sweatshirt Incident – Barks and Bytes

You think it's cute. I don't, you better watch your back when you're sleeping.

You think it’s cute. I don’t, you better watch your back when you’re sleeping.

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s mom said, “Thank goodness you were able to get the sweatshirt off of him without having a “wetting” experience of your own! 😂”

Ugh, you are so right. Not only would I have stunk, but I would have been cold too when that wet bit of me froze!

Genevieve said, “OMG! You’re killing me! One thing I know for sure is – that sweatshirt would’ve become collateral damage and been sacrificed into the gutter where I would deny having any knowledge of who it belonged to or how it got there.”

Bah ha ha, I thought of leaving it in the street and picking it up on my way back, but then I just rolled the wet bit so it was on the inside and soldiered on.

Clowie said, “I hope you washed the sweatshirt before you made Delilah wear it again – although Delilah probably wouldn’t mind!”

Yes, yes I washed the sweatshirt, after treating it with something to help take the urine smell out.

Emma said, “I’m glad my mom didn’t have the pee filled shirt to deal with. It would have pushed her over the edge trying to get it off the dog!”

It was comical for sure. Because the only thing harder than getting a sweatshirt on a dog, is getting it off them. 😉 Then add the piss factor and, well it ain’t easy.

Blueberry’s Human asked, “Why oh why wasn’t anyone taping this?”

I ask myself that same question. Every. Fucking. Time.

Jan K said, “There is never a dull moment with you….LOL! I think you need to invest in some dog coats or shirts…they design them so you don’t have those issues; though you probably realize that now. :-)”

I keep saying that, but I’m not sure what kind of coat to get and I need one that has a place for the harness clip on the back. And how in the world do you measure a dog for a coat?

Beth said, “Barley would never let me put a sweatshirt on her and take her outside–I figure she has a double coat, so she’s probably “dressed” similarly to me. On really cold days, I’ll put the boots on her, but she’s started hiding under the bed when they come out, so usually I give in and we just go for really short little walks.”

Oh she didn’t LIKE it. But she had no choice. 🙂 I think Delilah’s with Barley. I’m pretty sure she hates the boots worse than she hates the sweatshirt.

Sue said, “Sorry, but I truly laughed out loud. Poor humiliated Delilah! And Sampson? Jodi, that was karma at work 😉”

That’s exactly what it was supposed to do Sue. And you’re probably right about Karma. But the funny thing was that wearing the sweatshirt didn’t bother him nearly as much as it bothered Delilah. LOL

Well folks, that’s it for me. I hope you have an amazing weekend!
