Follow-Up Friday

March 16, 2012 By Jodi

For those new to the blog, my follow-up Friday provides me with an opportunity to update or revise a post from the previous week.

You know sometimes you post about something and you need an update but it doesn’t warrant a whole blog.  Or sometimes someone made a comment that really resonated with you.  Yup, Follow-Up Friday baby! :-)

Adventures In Daycare – Update

Well the ambulance came and took the poor drunk visitor away.  Sara says he just came in, said he needed an ambulance and  he liked dogs better than he liked humans. Who would have thought?  LOL

She had to put two dogs in the very back because they were being very protective about Sara and Dianne.  Tater who I believe is a pit bull mix and one crazy chocolate lab who was trying to go over the counter. :-0

Sara said when he reached in his jacket for the bottle she almost wet herself at first, good thing for Kegel exercises. 🙂

Paws To The Rescue – Author’s Note

I have to admit I was a bit nervous about puppies, since the rescue really stresses using bleach to help prevent the spread of Parvo. I mixed up three bottles full of a bleach solution and as soon as the puppies left, I threw all the towels in one crate and dumped two bottles of bleach in with them.

I probably should have waited until we got home when I could have taken the crate out of the car and sat it in the driveway. Instead we had to drive the 55 minutes home with the windows down to keep from asphyxiating ourselves. Good thing it was a nice day. 😉

Lesson learned.

Sharing Knowledge – Author’s Note

Let’s face it, we dog people are passionate about our fur babies.  We all have ideas on the right way to train a dog and the right way to feed a dog.  None of us likes to hear anything we consider as criticism regarding our babies.

I know first hand, Christine who used to own First Command (before it became The Mellow Mutt) once said to me that I might like to consider putting Sampson on low-calorie kibble.  I was never a big fan of hers nor she mine and therefore when she told me that I looked her dead in the eye and said, “I don’t want to.”

As it turns out, I did put him on a low-calorie kibble, and then moved him to raw.  We like raw, but not everyone does nor is it inexpensive and in this economy, sometimes we need to make hard decisions.

The Murphy situation is a tough one, and I think if I ever get the opportunity to speak with one of her parents I will, in the meantime the best we all can do is try to educate people.

Talk about it, you never know who might be listening!

Follow Up Friday

March 9, 2012 By Jodi

For those new to the blog, my follow-up Friday provides me with an opportunity to update or revise a post from the previous week.

You know sometimes you post about something and you need an update but it doesn’t warrant a whole blog.  Or sometimes someone made a comment that really resonated with you.  Yup, Follow-Up Friday baby! :-)

She’s At It Again – Author’s Note

So far I’ve picked up a LOT of poop.  Honestly, I’m embarrassed and disgusted that there is so much poop in my yard.  I blame it on Hubby who did not remove the leaves this year.  Yes, the leaves which were not removed by Hubby have been preserving poop, either that or someone is jumping over the fence and pooping in my yard.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I’ve been trying to get out there and pick up the fresh poop every day.  It’s hard to go outside with them and pick it up immediately, you saw the yard, it’s big!

And those dogs are fast, so very fast.  They move much quicker than I do.  Heck she can get out there and snarf down a poop faster than I can get out the door.

I don’t have to tell you that it’s not always easy with everything else going on, but I’m trying.  I admonish her too when she steps outside, “No eating poop, you hear me?”

But we all know how well she listens to me. 🙂

The Dog I Need – Author’s Note

Well really I feel like I can’t even comment on this, based upon the posts that followed less than 48 hours later.

Coconut Oil – Author’s Note

I sautéed asparagus in coconut oil the other night, with just a little bit of garlic and it was yummo!

Coconut oil, it’s not just for dogs.

Oh and I also noticed something Koly pointed out, Sampson’s breath was really fresh.  It didn’t smell nasty at all, and it was in the morning (morning breath, is there anything worse?) 🙂

Defeated and Lost, Parts 1 and 2 – Author’s Note/Update

I just want to clear the air, Part 2 was written IMMEDIATELY after Part 1, it’s not like I thought about it for days.  Or I slept on it overnight, they were originally going to be one extremely long post, so I broke it into two parts. The posts were written when the incident was really fresh and raw.  I felt discouraged, it happens.

Truthfully it wouldn’t have been nearly as traumatic for me if she hadn’t gotten stuck.  It was (for me) a mortifying experience, along with the realization that she could have really gotten hurt.

My friend Mindy gave me a pep talk, Sara gave me a pep talk and some suggestions, all of you gave me encouragement and suggestions, I’m back on track.

What these two posts showed me was what a wonderful and strong support unit I have in my blogville family.  I want to thank you all again for hanging in there with me and reassure you, I have a handle on this and I am NOT, I repeat NOT giving up on Delilah.

Delilah and I will be working tomorrow and Sunday and I will let you know what we do and how it goes.

Our week was a little rocky, but we are back on track.  How was your week?

Follow-Up Friday

March 2, 2012 By Jodi

For those new to the blog, my follow-up Friday provides me with an opportunity to update or revise a post from the previous week.

You know sometimes you post about something and you need an update but it doesn’t warrant a whole blog.  Or sometimes someone made a comment that really resonated with you.  Yup, Follow-Up Friday baby! :-)

Yahoo – Author’s Note

As you know Delilah is a work in progress.  As well as she did on her recalls last Saturday, yesterday she didn’t do as well.

I met my walking pal after work for a quick twenty-minute walk and we let the dogs run around in the field.  In the blink of an eye Delilah was gone.  I’m always concerned when she runs through the woods that her leash will get caught somewhere and she will strangle herself.   Normally she stops when she feels a strain on the leash, but you just never know.

My friend had seen Delilah enter the woods, so we attempted to follow her.  Thankfully I had the foresight to put their reflective vests on because it was snowing, and my friend easily spotted Delilah.  She was in someone’s back yard grazing on God knows what.

Even though I had been calling her from a distance she was preoccupied with what she was doing.  When I got close enough I called her again and she looked up.  As soon as she saw me she came running.

Our twenty-minute walk turned into forty. 🙂  As we were wrapping it up the dogs saw or heard something, I had Delilah’s leash at that point but when Sampson and Brady took off at a full run, I dropped the leash.  That was my bad.  I should never have done it considering how she had taken off earlier.

Sampson and Brady came right back but someone else was MIA.  It was close on 6 o’clock and I was freaking out a little because it was starting to get dark and I did not want to try to search for her at night.

We started walking down the hill towards the field which is the direction she was headed and I somehow found the sense to scream Wooo Hoooo, well that did it and she came tearing back to me.  But I can tell you I will probably not be giving her that kind of freedom again any time soon.

What Would You Call Him – Author’s Note

Many of you left comments indicating your cats do similar if not the same things.  That makes me feel better. 🙂

While this is mostly a blog about dogs, I did write a story about Bob last year that I thought was pretty amusing.  If you’d like to read it you can find it here.  I will have to warn you, I did use the “F” word in that post.

Dog Responsibility – Author’s Note

So as I related just a few minutes ago, we went up to the park last night.  After Delilah took off for the second time we headed home.  As we approached the field Sampson  paused and when I looked I could see there was someone in the field with their dogs.

I couldn’t tell if the dogs were leashed or not, so I just headed out.  The dogs were off leash and they came running down the path.  One of the dogs was a yellow lab and the other looked like a Springer Spaniel.

I exchanged quick hellos with their dad and then he headed up the hill and I headed out of the park.  The little Springer followed me….all the way out of the park.  In fact, I think (s)he was contemplating getting into my car.  The dad had kept walking.

It was full-blown dusk at this point and I was a little freaked out for the poor dog, but didn’t want to drag my guys back into the woods, so I cracked a window and locked the car and headed back towards the field.  The dog followed me.

I walked far enough in, encouraging the dog to go “find your dad,” and at last the dog headed off up the hill.

But again I was left stunned at the irresponsibility of this guy.  He literally just walked off and left his dog.  Alone.  In a park where there are coyotes and fishers.  I hope the little dog made it back without any issues.

I don’t know how we are going to get people to understand that owning a dog includes responsibility, especially to the dog!!

That’s it, I ‘m done now.  Looking forward to the weekend and some nice long walks with the dog.  We hope you enjoy yours.

Book Update: My book has 17,746 words.
