Follow-Up Friday – June 14, 2013

June 14, 2013 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Co-hosted Follow-Up Friday.

https://www.heartlikeadog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/follow-up-friday.jpg

This week I’m excited to welcome my friend Kari, from Hound Girl as my co-hostess.  You may or may not know that Kari was instrumental in the design of this blog.  I mentioned to her I wanted to go self-hosted but needed a redesign and BOOM she took off  running with it.  I am forever in her debt.

Kari took a hiatus from blogging for a while, after the unexpected passing of her muse, Fred.  During this time she also had a baby,  Kylie.  She’s back now and raring to go.  I’m so excited to see Hound Girl in my reader when I sign in.  If you haven’t ‘met’ Kari and Haylie (her lab) please stop on over and tell her Jodi sent you.

I was thrilled to be able to meet Kari at BlogPaws and while I didn’t get to spend as much time with her as I would have liked, it was still amazing to be able to spend time with incredible, smart, funny woman.

Please join me in welcoming my friend, Kari Pike.

You Make Me Laugh

Jan said, “I always wonder what dogs have in mind (and yes I do think there is a doggie logic in everything they do) when they do the rear action thing. Are they trying to get rid of the evidence or are they scattering it so it has the most impact for future smellers of the doggie news.”

I have no idea, I’ve heard everything from they are expressing their anal glands, to covering their scent to dominance.  If anyone ever gets inside their head, I bet we’d learn a LOT.

The Post in Which I Speak Deer

Peggy asked, “How far did they run after the deer before giving up?”

They ran into the woods about 30 yards or so and then came back.  They are more visual so once they got in there and couldn’t see the deer they came right back.

Animal Couriers asked, “How long did it take Delilah to come back?”

You know, she constantly surprises me.  I’ve been working her on a “Go Check” command where I un-clip her leash and let her investigate something of interest.  With the deer, she ran into the woods, checked it out and came right back.  We of course did NOT have a similar success the next day.  (More on that next week.)

2 Brown Dawgs said, “You have smart deer there that know “stop”. Maybe they could help train brown dawgs? :)”

Umm, I’m pretty sure your Brown Dawgs could teach my guys a thing or two! 🙂

Gizmo said, “Gizmo once took off after a deer, running as fast as his short little legs allowed…The deer actually slowed down, turned around and looked at him …You could just hear the deer saying “You have got to be kidding me!”

I could just picture that.

Just One Day

I’m still waiting for totals to post to see how many animals were saved.  Initial reports are amazing.  Next year I plan to post about this much earlier so those of  you who wish to participate can do so as well.

2 Brown Dawgs said, ” I am torn on this topic.  So many times “no kill” rescues dump their unadoptable dogs at humane societies and/or shelters. Then the shelter or humane society must be the bad guy.”

Yes that’s true and I should have clarified, Just One Day is asking shelters to pledge not to kill any saveable animals.

The only picture I have where she even remotely resembles a puppy.

The only picture I have where she even remotely resembles a puppy.

Isn’t she adorbs?

Standing Outside the Fire

Okay, I’ll agree with you all on one thing, it was a good choice of song.  The rest of it sucked!  But you all had great encouraging words for us.

Truly I am not disappointed.  This was a six week course and I admit I didn’t practice a whole lot at home and it was our first time in the center of the room.  A couple of us learned some things about our dogs.

We had one woman and I’m assuming it was her daughter (I’d say she’s about 10) and their dog Jessie, who were doing awesome on the sidelines.  But once they made it to the center of the room Jessie just shut down.  She was so overwhelmed and her little handler tried everything she could to get her focused, but she couldn’t.  Ariane suggested moving to the side to try again, but the young lady was so frustrated she sat in tears.

Oakley is a beautiful Ridgeback and his owner works super hard with him.  In fact, in our video if you look over to your right, you can see her practicing with him.  He did great in the center but at the end of the performance when everyone started clapping, he took off running around the room.

I do want to practice this routine a little bit more at home and see if Hubby will record it for us. The beginning of the video was cut off, Delilah started across the room and came to front and then we high fived before we went into walking/weaves and spinning.

In my ideal routine, we will be on opposite sides of the ring, will bow to each other and then she will come to front and we will high five.  The bit at the end where she jumps up on me, will be a kiss.

Sugar asked, “Maybe we missed it … what’s the reason for having the leash?”

The facility where we take classes is not a traditional facility.  The organization is still fairly young and so we don’t have the typical partitions/dividers that a more established facility has.  So unless you are 100% sure that you have your dog under control (s)he has to be on leash.

Um, I gotta wrap this up. It’s over 1,000 words. 🙁 I’ll be answering comments from yesterday’s post directly.

Thanks for joining Hound Girl and Heart Like a Dog for Follow-Up Friday.

A Day Late

June 1, 2013 By Jodi

Welcome to co-hosted Follow-Up Friday, the blog hop that let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

https://www.heartlikeadog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/follow-up-friday.jpg

Thanks so very much to Misty Shores Chesapeakes, my co-hostess this week.  She very graciously handled the entire blog hop yesterday so we could make the big announcement about K9 Kamp hosted by Koly and Kelly.

This ‘N That Thursday – May 23, 2013

This goes way back but I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind comments and yes, I intend to follow my bliss wherever it may lead me.

You Make Me Laugh

Sampson-1

I think it’s pretty clear, our pets are awesome and bring us joy and laughter all the time.

Leslie said, ““Bella, you make me laugh every. single. day. It’s one of her greatest gifts to me.”  What a beautiful statement.

H and Flo said, “I always smile when George uses my use of the bathroom as his cue to use the litter tray.”  Yes, I imagine that would make me smile too.

Sampson Loves Sara

Delilah is very good about getting her nails done (she’s such a princess) she will actually hand me her paw and let me clip them.  Sampson is the tough one though, despite the fact that he has light-colored nails.  He does tremble a bit when I take out the clippers, so it’s just easier to take him to see Sara.

Misty asked, “Have you ever tried using a grinder on them?”  You know Hubby did a while ago and Sampson didn’t care for the vibration, but it might be worth trying again.

Marrow Bones from Jones All Natural Chews

Thankfully the dogs passed the bones with no major incidents.

Julie said, “That is exactly why I always leave typed, step-by-step notes, but how can you be sure that they will follow them?”   You know Julie, I always used to do that, write everything out so that a monkey could come in and feed my dogs.  Granted he’d have to be a monkey that could read, and I have yet to find one of those.  For some reason I did NOT do that this time.  That will be the last time that I don’t do it.

Guaranteed.

All Things Collie said, “Wow, that’s a lot of chicken! Our cottage is rather small, or I would offer to dog sit!

But if you need a recommendation for a really great kennel, let me know. My daughter works for a kennel, the same kennel I worked at while in high school and college. It’s very clean, great staff, and the owners live on the property.”

Thank you, that is so sweet of you and I really appreciate that.  My house is quite large would you like to come here?  😉

Actually I was speaking with my daughter today and she offered to come over, I think if I fly (I hate flying) I could leave first thing Friday morning and come back Saturday and would really only need someone to feed them dinner on Friday and breakfast on Saturday.  I’ll keep you posted.

Mrs. Taleteller said, “I am trying to imagine you coming home and your head NOT exploding!”  LOL that’s pretty much what happened.

A Dog Walker’s Chinese Star

Sue asked, “What kind of wild animals are you talking about, anyway?”  Well we know for sure there are Fisher’s (aka fisher cats) in the woods and we’ve been told there are coyotes as well. Neither one of which I want to mess with.

Bert said, “Oh I definitely would go for a patent, I would change the design on the bag a little and I would add a fling cord for harder impact” I like the way you think Bert. Let’s talk.

Emma said, “Mom worries about getting the poo on herself sometimes but we never thought of flinging the bags.”  Yeah, getting it on yourself is disgusting, but it’s my dog.  I wouldn’t want someone else’s dog’s poop on me.  That just grosses me out.

All Things Collie said, “We have WADS, or a poopisle or a fecal grenade ready to aim at any dangers, and we never even knew it!”  Fecal grenades.  I love it!!

Jen said, “I’ve actually thought about that, if necessary, I’d throw a poop bag at a charging dog/person of ill intent. With or without accompanying ninja sounds. For the threat display, you understand.” Yes I do understand, but knowing me I’d probably be screaming, “Eat shit and die mother f**ker!”

Kim said, “By the way, that reminds me of when I used to walk the dogs when we lived in a subdivision–I would put the bag down by a tree in the common area as I walked and pick them up on my way back. We used to pass the house of a really, really obnoxious schnauzer that our dogs didn’t like and he would bark at us from his front door that was always open. One day after I set a bag down he came over and picked it up and went inside with it.”

OMG that made me laugh.  I set the bags down by trees too!  Delilah has a habit of pooping within a few minutes of starting our walk and there I am left to carry it the whole way.  But I’ve never had a dog carry a baggie off.

Pam said, “The moment it opened with, “It was a four bag walk…” I knew I was in for hilarity.” Thank you.  I was  actually singing that first line to “It was a hard day’s night.”

This ‘N That Thursday

I answered the comments on this post directly.  Good thing too because I’m way over my word count!

Join us next week for Follow-Up Friday when my co-host will be?  Who?  Any takers?

Thanks again to Misty Shores, you rock!!

Follow-Up Friday – May 17, 2013

May 17, 2013 By Jodi

Welcome to co-hosted Follow-Up Friday, the blog hop that let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

https://www.heartlikeadog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/follow-up-friday.jpg

My co-hostess this week has co-hosted with me many times. Most of you follow the training exploits of Thunder, Storm and Freighter and if you don’t what are you waiting for?

I’ve come to depend on her for many things, not the least of which is to help me see the other side of certain issues.  I can count on her for just about anything and I’ve never even met her. 🙂

Please help me welcome my friend Linda, from the 2 Brown Dawgs blog.

Thanks for everything you’ve done for me with this blog hop Linda, I really appreciate it.

Black and White Sunday

This picture was taken shortly after Delilah joined our home, it is one of my favorite photos of the dogs, even though you can’t really see either dog’s face.

B & W 5-12-13

Animal Couriers said, “What glorious ripples of light along Delilah’s back!”  It’s funny I had posted the photo when I noticed them myself, she almost looks like a Ridgeback. 🙂

Coralee said, “Four-legged Twister, without the mat!” I like that!

Cupcake said, “I kind of see one and a quarter dogs….? Playing rolypoly?”  You know Hubby and I could sit and watch our dogs wrestle for hours, they are really entertaining.

WordPress Family

Like me, many of you have forgotten about awards also, that made me feel a tad bit better.

Emma had a great suggestion, “When I get one I copy the link to the blog post that gave it to me onto a word doc and save it on my desktop.”  Good idea Emma, thanks for sharing that!

Jackie stated she puts the link into a draft post immediately.

Flea asked, “Was Sampson sitting in the middle of the street?”

No, sadly that cracked and car filled bit of asphalt is our driveway.

JoAnn asked, “Sampson was a good boy and didn’t even get up to chase the goldens?”

Initially he was lying down, but you can tell when something peaks his interest.  He sat up and I said to Hubby who was about 15 feet behind him that there were dogs, so Hubby reminded him that he needed to stay.

He really is a good boy.  He loves to lie out in the driveway and watch the world go by.  Delilah can never be out front unless her leash is looped around the tree.  She would NEVER be content to just lie in the yard.

Meet Emma

The biggest question here was “Why does Hubby not want a Beagle?”

That would be because shortly after Hubby and I started going out we got a Beagle mix, her name was Roxanne.  Hubby always says she was a dumb dog.  But I say we were the dumb ones.  We did absolutely nothing with her, no training, no socialization, nothing.

Honestly I don’t know what we were thinking getting a puppy with three kids under the age of 8.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The last photo of my sweet little Beagle, Roxanne.

Anyway, remember when I said I’d tell you what Hubby always said to the kids about want?  Here it is, “Want in one hand and shit in the other and see which one gets full faster.”

That’s my attitude, if I want a Beagle, I’ll get a Beagle, quite frankly I’m quite enamored with Beagles and while I know I’ll never have a do-over for Roxanne, I would love to give a sweet Beagle a loving home.

Wordless Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Here were some of my favorite comments:

Elyse and Riley asked, “I suck at captions, but is that slobber hanging from Delilah’s mouth?”  Yes, yes indeed it is.

Jackie Bouchard said, “I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. Or a hotdog. Or a cookie. Or some packing peanuts. I’m not fussy….”

H and Flo said, “I said I wanted the cats-eye contacts.”

JoAnn’s made me laugh out loud, “sorry mom…i didn’t mean to poo on the carpet.”

Long Life Cats and Dogs said, “Sorry I haven’t been around for a while but great to come back to this gorgeous pic. PS – what’s hanging between the collar and the mouth?”  Um Miss Susan, that would be drool.  She’s practicing for the dog version of Big Daddy.  I hear they intend to call it Big Doggy.

Thank you all very much, your comments always amuse me.  Many of you were right on with the BlogPaws theme.  Here’s my caption.

WW 5-15-13- WM You did say they have food at BlogPaws, didn’t you? So explain to me again exactly why I can’t go?

This is the Follow-Up Friday Blog Hop hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and Heart Like a Dog, please join us.
