Little Feet, Big Hearts

September 3, 2013 By Jodi

Today I’d like to share a special girl with you.  Her name is Nyla.

On the surface, Nyla’s story is like so many other dogs in today’s society. She comes from a home with a human mom and dad, human siblings, a dog sister (who has gone to the bridge) and a cat brother.

Nyla2

Like so many dogs in today’s society, her owners are moving and their new residence doesn’t take dogs.  Her owner intended on euthanizing Nyla, but had a last minute change of heart and desperately began calling around looking for a rescue to take her.

Thankfully her owner found Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue, and the loving heart of Jen Wemmell.

Vet records however, tell a different story.  Nyla had not been kept up to date on her vaccinations and she’d been repeatedly bred.  Nyla was a breeding a machine.

Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue took Nyla in on August 10th, this beautiful little girl was adopted out almost immediately and then within two weeks she was returned.  Her new owner felt they didn’t have the time to give to Nyla, so according to the rescue’s contract, Nyla was returned.  Jen has since found a foster home for Nyla, but this confused little girl needs a forever home.

Nyla 3

Nyla is a 5 year old female Blue Nose Pit Bull, Champagne in color.  She is spayed, and up to date on all her vaccinations.  She has lived with small children, other dogs and cats.  She seems to be a well-rounded, happy dog despite the curves life has thrown at her.

About two weeks ago I had the opportunity to speak with Jen Wemmell about Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue.

Jen is no stranger to rescue, she’s been rescuing and re-homing dogs for years.  She’s never had a problem re-homing a dog, until she started asking for a fee.  And believe me, compared to some rescues her fee is very minimal – about $200, even though some of her dogs need treatments that cost much more than that.

Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue has filed for 501 (C)(3) status which is currently pending.  In the meantime all of the care and expense for these dogs come out of Jen’s own pocket or from donations.

We talked about ways of fund-raising for rescue and while I had a couple of suggestions for her, I’m woefully lacking in terms of how rescues solicit funds.  BUT I did tell Jen that I had some awesome readers that are far savvyer than I am.  I’m hoping some of you might have some ideas you could share, that could help this newly founded, but destined for great things rescue get some much needed donations.

In the meantime, today is the day I ask you to share this post, in hopes of finding Nyla her forever home.

Troll-In the Dungeons

August 19, 2013 By Jodi

“Harry was just helping himself to a baked potato when Professor Quirrell came sprinting into the hall, his turban askew and terror on his face.  Everyone stared as he reached Professor Dumbledore’s chair, slumped against the table, and gasped, “Troll – in the dungeons – thought you ought to know.””

He then sank to the floor in a dead faint.  (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, J. K. Rowling, 1997)

Okay so there’s not really a troll in my dungeon.

Actually I don’t really have a dungeon.  I do have a basement, but there’s no troll in there, only my mom.

Unless there’s something she’s not telling me, there’s no troll.

I know what you’re thinking.  What in the hell does that have to do with a dog blog?  Has she lost her freaking mind?

I suppose the answer to that would depend upon who you spoke to.

This post actually has nothing to do with trolls or dungeons.  It all has to do with our wood pile.  I just wasn’t sure you’d read the post if I told you what was in the wood pile.

The story goes like this.

Thursday after work I took the dogs for a walk and Hubby went outside to cut some wood.  When we came back from our walk Hubby said “Look what I found in the wood pile.”

20130815_180053

Hubby said he lifted up the tarp covering the wood and there it was.  He poked it with a stick and it slithered under the wood pile.  Yesterday when he lifted up the tarp, it was back again.

Hubby says it’s a Garter Snake.

I said it needs to go.

Hubby says it won’t mess with people or pets, he also says it’s eating spiders.

Well then.  As long as it’s eating spiders, it can stay.  As long as it leaves me and my dogs alone. I mean really, what’s one snake vs how many spiders in a pile of wood?

I’m really not so worried about it bothering me.  If you’re a betting person, odds are pretty good that I will never approach the wood pile again.

I’m not so sure about the dogs.  They keep going over there and sniffing.

Every time they head out that way I tense up.  But I grab my camera too. 🙂  If they do discover it, hopefully I’ll have pictures.  Unless I’m too busy screaming and running.

Would you leave a Garter Snake in your wood pile?  Would you go near a wood pile with a Garter Snake?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Life on a Llama Farm

August 1, 2013 By Jodi

Most of our days are spent relaxing on the front deck.  Oh and when the horses come out the dogs run down to the fence to bark, or in Sampson’s case, whine at them.

Since today is This ‘N That Thursday, (many thanks to our host the 2 Brown Dawgs) I thought I’d share a few photos.

photo (1) Here is Hubby getting cozy with one of the llamas, I think her name is Breezy or is it Rose?  I’m not sure.

photo (2)

Here I am with the same Llama.  She was the friendliest.

photo (3)

Here is one of the three donkeys on the farm.  I have a very cute video of the donkey running the fence line and playing with the dogs, which will have to wait until I can upload it.

photo (4) This was on our walk yesterday.  They call them paved, two-lanes roads.  I do not.

photo (5) Delilah is desperate to get into water, any water.  She’s even considering the hot tub.

I have more photos which I’ll work on posting once I get home and get my computer issues resolved.

This morning it is pouring.  So we will stay hunkered down on the porch and hopefully we will get a break in the weather so we can take a walk.

The Dogs of Blogville Calendar Contest

I had every intention of getting this contest going last Monday, but the computer issues have really put a damper on it.  I hope to have it up and going early next week.  Please bear with me.

Co-hosted Follow-Up Friday

My co-hostess for tomorrow is the one and only, Pup Fan from I Still Want More Puppies.

That’s it for me, many thanks to our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs blog.

If the linky code won’t work you can get it here.
