Stairway to Slumber

February 3, 2014 By Jodi

Reinforcing good behavior is an important part of dog training, which is why the dogs at Stone Manor are constantly being put through their paces.

They need to sit when Mama’s in the kitchen working, they lay down when we eat dinner.  We practice recalls in the yard and when we’re walking we work on heeling.

Delilah and I take the occasional training class just to keep us on our toes and help keep her mentally sharp.  So when the Train Your Dog Challenge, hosted by Something Wagging This Way Comes, Rescued Insanity and Alfie’s Blog came up, I wondered, just what exactly am I going to train the dogs to do?

Train-Your-Dog-Badge-150x150

Some of you may remember that last year, I heeled Delilah with a chick pea.

I know right?  Amazing the things you can do with a highly food motivated dog.

But this year was a bust.  I had no idea what to do.  And then Sampson came down with a partial ACL tear and my vet suggested pet steps for the bed, couch and car.

How hard could it be?  We use stairs every day.  There are stairs into our house.  Stairs down from our deck.  Stairs up into the back yard.

The dogs use stairs in one form or another every single day.

This was going to be cake.

It took a while but I finally found a set of stairs that could hold a dog over 50 pounds and I set them up in front of the bed.

Step 1

I called Sampson in and using some treats coaxed him up the stairs and back down.  I did this about three times and each time I did it I said, “Stairs.”

The next time we went into the bedroom I said, “Stairs.”

And Sampson jumped on the bed.

I asked him to get off the bed via the stairs.

He jumped over them.

I’d bring his night time treat in and hold it in front of the stairs and he walks past them and jumps on the bed.

I’ve seen him use the stairs on his own without being coaxed, once.

ONCE!

Dammit, this is my easy dog!!

So once again, we busted out the treats.

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

He does fine when I’m coaxing him with treats, which I will continue to do at least three or four times per day.  My goal is to get him so comfortable he uses the stairs without being coaxed.

Hubby and I have decided that even when Sampson’s restrictions are lifted, we will keep the stairs.  Sampson will be ten this year and Delilah will be nine and odds are at some point the stairs may be permanently needed.

Did you participate in Train Your Dog month?  What were your goals?  Did you succeed or did you struggle like I did?

Off-leash Chatter and Advent Calendar for Dog Lovers Day 10

December 10, 2013 By Jodi

You may remember we had an incident in class where Delilah completely ignored me and went off and did her own thing.  Our trainer’s thought is that the leash is a connection for Delilah and I and once that leash is unclipped Delilah feels like she doesn’t need to interact with me anymore.

That statement brought up so many great thoughts and comments, so I thought I’d respond to them here.

Jan said, “There is usually some logic and consistency in the way a dog brain operates, It’s great that you were up for the challenge.”

Yup, there’s Delilah the Mr. Spock of the dog world, logically she thinks when we aren’t connected by the leash, we aren’t connect at all.

Beam me up Scotty.

Pamela asked, “Curious. I remember you doing some off-leash heeling practice at home. Do you do something special to signal her that you’re working together off leash?”

Well the first thing that was different is at home I had food in my hand.  Granted it was ONLY a chick pea, but it was food none-the-less.  In Nosework class I don’t have the food in my hand, it’s in my treat pouch.

She is also not on leash at home nor is she wearing a collar.  Typically when I release her to find in the class room, I simply drop the leash and let her go.  But this particular time I unclipped the leash.  You may recall I struggle with her taking off on me on our walks if I don’t keep her on leash.

That is really the only difference I can think of.

Jessica said, “You can also use two leashes–unclip one leash and see if the dog tries to run off. No risk if they do, because you still have the other one attached.”

That is an awesome idea!  I have a 15′ leash I use on our walks and I think I might just try that, although I wonder if she can sense the weight of the leash on the collar?

Kristine said, “I am so glad you were able to come up with something that helped! Though I am kind of bummed there was no magic cure all. *sigh*”

Ah Kristine my dear, you’ve been working with the Tornado on a leash long enough to know there is no magic cure all.  🙂  I am however hopeful that now we know what the issue is, there will be a way to work on it.  Never fear, I will share as we go.

Dawn said, “Keeping that connection for off leash work can be tough (says she with terriers). It’s been a longtime since I’ve trained for the obedience ring, but I used to do a little routine where I would get my dog into heel position, look at them to be sure they were paying attention to me, then say ready when they were. This was to help keep that connection and let them know that we were in working mode. In training class, I worked to keep my dog engaged with me whenever there was downtime (other dogs working, instructor speaking, etc.). I would just ask them to do simple behaviors like puppy pushups, spins, nothing that would get to rowdy.”

You bring up a great point Dawn.  Typically I have Delilah focus on me while Arianne is hiding our find.  I also work to keep her busy while other teams our searching, just as you suggested.  We play target games, I have her sit, down or spin BUT for some reason that night I was short on treats, so I was stingy.  And I did not keep her occupied during our ‘down time.’

I might have played a part in this particular incident.

You’re crazy woman, I am a searching machine!

So what do you think?  Does it make sense?  Is there off-leash hope for Delilah?  Sound off in the comments.

Off-Leash Behavior and Advent Calendar for Dog Lovers: Day Two

December 2, 2013 By Jodi

Day two of the Advent Calendar for Dog Lovers is here.  Don’t worry, I’m going to give you all the information you need for a chance to win another awesome prize, but first I wanted to chat a bit about Delilah’s off-leash behavior in last week’s Nosework Class and some insights I received from our trainer, Arianne.

Free to be me

So you may recall, Delilah loves the nosework game, and she’s very good at it.  Typically I drop the leash when I release her, but seeing as there was only one other team in class last Tuesday I decided to un-clip her leash.  And in that moment, my lovely dog who typically shines in the classroom setting, took off for my trainer’s treat bag.  I called and coaxed and was totally ignored.  So I went to her, clipped her and brought her back to our spot.

Arianne said, “Interesting.”

We decided we will try it again.  And we got the same result.

Arianne said, “Let’s try it with a check cord.”

I revved her up, dropped the cord and off she ran to Arianne’s treats again.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The next time it was our turn, Arianne suggested I keep hold of the check cord and drop it, IF and ONLY IF Delilah took a step towards the hide.  If Delilah made like she was heading to the treats, I was to step towards the hide, if Delilah responded, I could drop the line.  If Delilah did not, I was not to release her.

This time as she made to head towards Arianne’s treats, I took a step towards the hide and she followed, so I dropped the line.

On our next turn, we removed the check cord and replaced it with what basically amounts to a leash handle.  Just a clip and the handle.  Same deal, if she moves towards the hide I can release her.  This time, she went for the hide.

On our last turn, I removed the leash and kept a hold of her by her collar.  As soon as she indicated she was going for the search, I released her.

It’s a simple answer.

That was a brief summary of what we did in our class last week.  Are you confused?  Are you wondering just what the connection between Delilah and the un-clipping of the leash is?

It’s the connection.

Simply put, when Delilah is on the leash, she feels like she must engage with me, when I un-clip the leash, in her mind she’s a free dog and no longer “HAS” to engage with me.  Basically the leash keeps us connected and once that connection is lost, Delilah thinks she can do what she wants.

Delilah forgets who her Mama is and how much her Mama likes a challenge.

Arianne and I will continue working on this, and I have hopes that at some point I will indeed be able to trust Delilah off-leash.  Until then, I’m perfectly content to keep her on leash.
