What's In Your Kong?…..Day Two Hundred, Ninety Five

September 21, 2011 By Jodi

9:00 pm is snack time in my house.  Not only do hubby and I help ourselves to some delectable goodies; Sampson and Delilah need their treats too.  In fact, Delilah insists on it.

For the longest time, the dogs got something called Pork Twists.  They kind of remind me of fruit roll-ups, except without the fruit, and made of pork and stuffed with liver.  Yeah, fruit roll-ups.

We ran out of Pork Twists so I picked up some Duck Sticks.  They remind me of Slim Jims, except they are really long and made of duck.  The dogs  gobbled these up in a matter of seconds without having to go to their separate corners.  Then they looked at me as if to say, “That’s it? That’s all we get?” “Isn’t it snack time?”

A couple of weeks ago I went to the pet store and asked about treats that might last longer than a few seconds.  The very nice and helpful woman showed me some Bully Sticks and then proceeded to tell me they were made out of bull urine.  Yes, you read that right. Bull urine.

Thanks, but I’ll pass on those.

Then she said, she fills her dog’s Kong and sticks it in the freezer.  A lot more work than I wanted for treats, so I settled on something else and went on my merry way.

Coincidentally, a few days after she mentioned this, Tena at Success Just Clicks had an excellent post about what you can fill a Kong with.

Last Friday, I had nothing for the dog’s snacks so while I was preparing supper I decided to try filling their Kongs.

Sampson’s is red and Delilah’s is purple.

I filled them with a bit of ground beef, some cheese and I frosted the end with peanut butter.  I put the Kong in the freezer for about 3 1/2 hours and then handed them off to the dogs.

I hit that one out of the park.  They worked on those things for 1/2 an hour!

Since Friday night, I’ve been filling their Kongs every night.  My favorite thing to stuff them with is a couple of pieces of rolled up salami, a piece of chunked up American Cheese and then frost the end with yogurt, pumpkin, peanut butter or cream cheese.   They lick the goodie off the end and get rewarded with little bits of cheese; they have to work for the salami but it’s not too messy.

This is a Kong that has the cream cheese filling the bottom.

I enjoy giving the dogs a treat that makes them happy, keeps them busy and I know what’s in it!

Check out Tena’s ideas and then tell me, what do you put in YOUR Kong?

Monkey See…..Day Two Hundred, Twenty Six

July 14, 2011 By Jodi

I admit, when Delilah first came to us she was much wilder/crazy/spontaneous than she is now.  I had hopes that over time, Sampson’s behaviors would impress themselves on her.  While some of her exuberance still remains she has learned something from Sampson.

You see….we have a ritual in our house that Sampson started.

When we come home from work, or anytime we have been parted for any length of time, you must pay homage to the king.  If you don’t immediately approach him, then he gets a toy and lays there playing with it and he waits for you.

As you approach him, the tail starts.  Thump. Thump. Thump.  He smiles and then you rub; for what seems like hours but in reality is only about 5 minutes.

When you stop rubbing if he isn’t satisfied, he rolls over.

Honestly he’s so cute, that you rub some more.

And yes, this is the trait that Delilah has picked up.

She will often times greet you at the door with a toy in her mouth.

Or she grabs a toy and postures…

Lately the cat has begun this greeting ritual.

Thankfully he doesn’t bring a toy and wait for you to pet him, but he is very persistent.

In fact, he just about insists that you pet him.

Monkey see….

Let Me Rip It, Let Me Tear It…Day Two Hundred, Seventeen

July 5, 2011 By Jodi

Sometimes my dogs get in the mood to rip things up.  This is the reason that most of their toys come from either The Dollar Store or The Christmas Tree Shoppes.  Our philosophy is we would rather have them rip apart a toy rather than say….a sofa!

Usually only on their birthdays will we splurge and spend more that a dollar to two on a toy.

Sometimes the toys barely last long enough for a quick sniff and other times the toys last for years.

Today Sampson was in the mood to tear a toy.

The Ritual begins like this.

First the toy gets placed on your lap.

Then a tug of war begins, the purpose of this is to rip the toy.  When he hears the first rip, he gets very excited.

Once the rip is large enough, he proceeds to pull the stuffing from the toy.

The entire purpose for destroying the toy, is to get the little squeaker out.  We call this their *bubble gum* because they chew it but don’t eat it.

Another satisfied customer.

I tried to catch a bit of video.
