Little Feet, Big Hearts

September 3, 2013 By Jodi

Today I’d like to share a special girl with you.  Her name is Nyla.

On the surface, Nyla’s story is like so many other dogs in today’s society. She comes from a home with a human mom and dad, human siblings, a dog sister (who has gone to the bridge) and a cat brother.

Nyla2

Like so many dogs in today’s society, her owners are moving and their new residence doesn’t take dogs.  Her owner intended on euthanizing Nyla, but had a last minute change of heart and desperately began calling around looking for a rescue to take her.

Thankfully her owner found Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue, and the loving heart of Jen Wemmell.

Vet records however, tell a different story.  Nyla had not been kept up to date on her vaccinations and she’d been repeatedly bred.  Nyla was a breeding a machine.

Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue took Nyla in on August 10th, this beautiful little girl was adopted out almost immediately and then within two weeks she was returned.  Her new owner felt they didn’t have the time to give to Nyla, so according to the rescue’s contract, Nyla was returned.  Jen has since found a foster home for Nyla, but this confused little girl needs a forever home.

Nyla 3

Nyla is a 5 year old female Blue Nose Pit Bull, Champagne in color.  She is spayed, and up to date on all her vaccinations.  She has lived with small children, other dogs and cats.  She seems to be a well-rounded, happy dog despite the curves life has thrown at her.

About two weeks ago I had the opportunity to speak with Jen Wemmell about Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue.

Jen is no stranger to rescue, she’s been rescuing and re-homing dogs for years.  She’s never had a problem re-homing a dog, until she started asking for a fee.  And believe me, compared to some rescues her fee is very minimal – about $200, even though some of her dogs need treatments that cost much more than that.

Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue has filed for 501 (C)(3) status which is currently pending.  In the meantime all of the care and expense for these dogs come out of Jen’s own pocket or from donations.

We talked about ways of fund-raising for rescue and while I had a couple of suggestions for her, I’m woefully lacking in terms of how rescues solicit funds.  BUT I did tell Jen that I had some awesome readers that are far savvyer than I am.  I’m hoping some of you might have some ideas you could share, that could help this newly founded, but destined for great things rescue get some much needed donations.

In the meantime, today is the day I ask you to share this post, in hopes of finding Nyla her forever home.

Foster Opportunity In Connecticut

February 4, 2012 By Jodi

This morning was a busy one, it was my pick-up dogfood day and I figured while I was out, I would get some of my weekend running done, in the hopes that tomorrow I can relax a bit.

My journeys today took me to the town I used to live in and past the town dump.  In this town (unless it’s changed) the dog pound is inside the landfill.  I know, gross.

As I was driving past the dump this thought popped into my head, “I just want to go inside and pull a dog.”  I’ve honestly never had that thought pop into my mind while driving past that area before.

Before you get too excited, no I did not stop.  I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt what Hubby would say.

Then early this afternoon I got a facebook message from one of my friends asking if I was still interested in fostering.

Ummmmm, whatcha got?

She has a friend who is going to Ecuador for a year to teach.  She has a five-year old black lab named Nikko and she has someone who will stay at her apartment and care for the dog, but she’s not sure the dog will get everything he’s used to.  Hmmmm….

So I mentioned it to Hubby and he said, “No.  We have enough with the two we have.”

I walked away and under my breath I said, “You suck.”

I decided I needed some shopping therapy and so I headed out to Kohl’s.

On my way home I really thought about bringing another dog into the house.  For a year.

I thought about how Sampson is sometimes snarky with other males.

I thought about how difficult the adjustment was when Delilah joined our pack.

I thought about how my food bill for my dogs is already higher than the food bill for the humans.

I thought about how I struggle sometimes just walking two dogs.

I thought about how Sampson and Delilah go to daycare two days a week and what would Nikko do.

I thought about how small my bed seems with two humans and two dogs in it.

I thought about how we all would fall in love with Nikko and lose him after a year.

I thought about how Sampson and Delilah’s lives would change with the long-term addition of a third dog and decided long-term fostering isn’t the way to go for me.

When I got home Hubby said, “You know, we could probably do it.”

I said, “No.”

So if anyone’s interested in fostering a dog for about a year or you know someone who might be, leave me a message in the comments or shoot me an e-mail at auntiejodi@hotmail.com.  As my friend pointed out, Nikko does have someone to care for him, he may just miss some things for a while.

No progress on my book today.

Follow-Up Friday

January 6, 2012 By Jodi

For those new to the blog, my follow-up Friday provides me with an opportunity to update or revise a post from the previous week.

You know sometimes you post about something and you need an update but it doesn’t warrant a whole blog.  Or sometimes someone made a comment that really resonated with you.  Yup, Follow-Up Friday baby! :-)

Things I Learned In 2011 – Update

As I was surfing along today reading all of my favorite blogs I was reminded of something else I learned in 2011.

Right clicking on a link.

When I first started blogging and began linking to other posts, I set the links up to open in a new window.  I did that because I personally don’t care to click on a link and be taken to another website, I prefer to have the new site open in a new window.

But not everyone is me.

I found out that when I go to a link, instead of using the left button on my mouse, if I use the right I get the option of opening the referencing site in a new window or tab.

I’m pretty sure all of you know this, but I needed to share. 🙂

Death By Chocolate – Update

New Year’s day is traditionally a day I set aside to clean up the mess of Christmas and get my house back to a semblance of normalcy.  It was unseasonably warm for the first day of January and after an hour’s walk I was very warm.  I came home and slipped into shorts and flip flops.

Even after an hour’s walk Delilah still had trouble in her system.  While I was taking care of some laundry Delilah decided to go into the sink and remove a dirty plastic container that was soaking.  She took it from the kitchen and moved it into the living room where most of her destruction usually takes place.  In the process she dumped a bunch of water on the kitchen floor.

Meanwhile, I’m blissfully unaware of what has transpired in my 30 second absence, so I flip flop into the kitchen.

I’m not sure how your kitchen floor is, but on my kitchen floor water + flip flops = FAIL.

It. Does. Not. Work.

I slipped and almost fell and thought, “This dog will be the death of me.”

Incidentally she also ate the what remained of a stick of butter and I caught her with a second stick, that I had to throw out.  At that point I was extremely frustrated with her and I did something really bad.  I tapped her on the top of her nose and said, “NO!”  🙁

Foster Homes Needed – Author’s Note

I’m really glad I found that post on Blog Paws.  Two of my readers are in the Alexandria, Virginia area!  Kim from Life at Golden Pines was thinking of calling and possibly taking a foster, and Pup Fan said she would talk to her husband about it, but regardless of what he said she would post about it as she has lots of readers in the area!

I’m hoping the shelter found temporary homes for those waiting for their forever homes.

That’s it from me, so how was your week?
