One Person CAN Make a Difference!

January 15, 2014 By Jodi

I thought for my Blog The Change post this year I’d do something a little different and showcase a couple of people I know who are making a difference for abandoned dogs and how they’re doing it.

Making a difference for the Street Dogs of Dallas – Spotlight on “T”

Blog the Change

First up is my friend “T.”  T lives in Dallas, Texas, in fact my BTC post for last April highlighted the plight of the Street Dogs of Dallas. Sadly the situation in Dallas hasn’t changed much.  There are still dogs being dropped off in the Cul de sac and they’re still struggling to find food, and shelter and dealing with the other elements such as mange, injuries incurred from fighting amongst themselves, not to mention the limited shelter available is often times claimed by homeless people.

T and the amazing men that work with him, pool their money and every month buy whatever they can for dog food. Some of the lucky dogs become shop dogs.  Pups like these two.

Saved

The really lucky ones get adopted by one of the guys.  Of these two, one was adopted and sadly one was hit by a car and died.

A couple of months ago my friend tagged me on Facebook in a picture of this guy.

Shop dog H.jpg

We commented back and forth about this guy and my friend shared that he didn’t think this guy would make it.  He had mange pretty bad, had some open sores and it looked like he had part of one of his back feet chewed off.  I was horrified and asked if he could get the dog to the Vet and send me the bill.  T told me he didn’t think the dog would make it, he was in really rough shape.

So with tears pouring down my face, I asked him to take the dog to the Vet and have him euthanized and send me the bill.  We might not have been able to save him, but at the very least we could make sure he didn’t die a slow and painful death.

And then I made him promise he’d stay with him until the end, just to make sure he wasn’t alone.  T said he could do that for me, and that he would take him to his own vet and if the vet thought he could be saved, he would do it. He also said, he’d handle the cost of the Vet.

It was not an easy thing for me to request, and I was so heartbroken that I waited a couple of weeks and finally pulled on my big girl panties and asked how he’d made out with the dog.

This is the response I got, “His name is Homer and we put in a doggie door.”

Shop dog - H -1 The amazing company that T works for, took care of the vetting and now Homer is one of the lucky dogs who made it off the street.

No, T can’t save all the dogs, but together with his co-workers they try to make the lives of these dogs a little bit better.

No Dumping! – Spotlight on “D”

My second friend is “D.”  Last spring my friend D and her husband left Connecticut and bought a house in North Carolina.

D is huge dog lover and has three of her own.  Her husband has put his foot firmly down and told her no more.   So what happens when she finds out that people are dropping their unwanted dogs and puppies at the local landfill?

This amazing woman is working with the town and her vet.  They are trapping, spaying and neutering and re-homing these abandoned babies.  They are also in the process of relocating the unmanned dump to the manned recycling area so they can stop people from just dumping their dogs.

She says, “I knew God had a plan for me here.”

So why am I sharing these two stories with you today?  Because I want you to know that there are many, many ways to make a difference in animals lives and it’s not always in a traditional manner.  And to remind you to leave your mind and your heart open to the possibilities of what the universe has in store for you.

Follow-Up Friday, July 19, 2013

July 19, 2013 By Jodi

Thank you for joining me for Follow-Up Friday, the blog hop that let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

https://www.heartlikeadog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/follow-up-friday.jpg

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, my co-hostess this week is the fabulously wonderful Jodi Chick from Kol’s Notes.  Don’t just take my word for it.   You know Kol’s Notes is a finalist in this years Petties, right?  I mean Holy Woof, my co-hostess this week not only won a Nose to Nose Award for best Bark Blog, she’s also up for a Pettie for Best Dog Blog.   Some of our other blogging friends are up for awards as well, so make sure you go vote.

I feel like I’m blogging with royalty.  Thank you so much for co-hosting this week Jodi!

You Make Me Smile

Emma said, “Mom says the ultimate lazy dog move was about 2 years ago when she took me out to pee and I laid down and peed while lying down.”

Wow Emma that is either really lazy or you weren’t feeling well at all.  But I’m with mom, I would probably find that disgusting.

Kim said, ” I can’t lay down and eat, so how do they?”

Good question Kim I wonder that myself!  I also worry that he’ll choke.

Flea said, “My dog makes me laugh when he’s running away from the duck.”

That would make me laugh too Flea, except I’ve seen how mean Petey is.  I’d run from him too. 😉

In CT it’s Against the Law

Marie asked, “what is a pig gestation crate?”

I’m not sorry to tell you that I don’t know.  I don’t want to know either.  Sue knows, and she will tell you but please NOT HERE.  While I love to advocate for animal welfare there are some things that I just can’t read about because it gives me such anxiety that I cannot sleep.

Suffice to say, it’s horrifying.

2 Brown Dawgs commented, “Some of those things are good, but why do the animal rights people always have to go after the hunters?”

I would say because just like everything else, certain people take advantage of or abuse privileges which ends up impacting everyone.

Pam asked, “Why have a pet if you’re just going to tie it up outside?”

Probably because it’s not really a ‘pet,’ at least it’s not treated as such.  Some people have such horrible views about animals and proper treatment.

Little Lady No Name

I love how some of you gave her a name.  There is something so inexplicably sad to me that she has no name.

I don’t know if she made it out or not, I was too afraid to call the pound.

Such Intensity

Top of stairs

You had a lot of good guesses, but no-one guessed right.

My favorite comment came from Elyse, “I’m gonna guess that Delilah was acting crazy at the bottom of the stairs and he was giving her a “WTF?” look.”

The funny thing is, I totally picture him rolling his eyes when she does some of her crazy antics.

So here’s what he was looking at.

You guys remember Bob? Bob Stone?

You guys remember Bob? Bob Stone?

Yuppers, it was Bob Stone the cat.

This ‘N That Thursday

Blueberry’s Human said, “Yay – loved the calendar – it really is good quality and the photos are excellent!”

Thank you.  The reason this means so much to me is she bought one of the calendars.  In fact, Blueberry is the featured dog for the month of October.

Blue

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s mom said, “I’ll be glad to send you some bugs … hehe”  And Donna said, “Jodi – you are so lucky it hasn’t been buggy by you.”

Perhaps I wasn’t clear.  Walking the dogs around the neighborhood at 9:00 pm was fairly bug free, going out on our normal walks in the woods and we are bombarded.  We are not lacking bugs, thank you very much!

Now this one is going back a ways.

Seven Ways to Pissed Off

Remember this?

Yesterday when we went to the park, all the signs were gone.  I’m not complaining, but I am curious as to what happened.

That’s it for me, thanks again to my co-hostess Jodi Chick.  This is the Follow-Up Friday Blog hop hosted by Kol’s Notes and Heart Like a Dog.

Wild Heart Ranch

January 15, 2013 By Jodi

Blog the Change is an event, where bloggers from all over the globe focus on animal causes that are near and dear to our hearts.

Blog the Change

Today I’d like to shine the light on someone who works tirelessly in the field of animal rescue.  I’ve been following her efforts on my facebook page for the last few months.

Annette King Tucker is the owner and operator of a 10-acre ranch located in Claremore, Oklahoma.  Wild Heart Ranch is an animal sanctuary that rescues, and rehabilitates wild animals, who are injured by either natural causes or the cruelty of man.

I copied her mission statement from her website:

  • Provide medical or infant support to any indigenous wild animal in need of assistance and release it into suitable wild habitat once care is completed.
  • Refrain from imprinting the animal to its human caretakers during its stay in captivity
  • Educate the public about wild animals in our area and teach a genuine appreciation and respect of their needs and characteristics
  • Educate ourselves in the care and needs of each species that we experience so that all animals receive complete, professional and individual care
  • Maintain our facility in the most stringent of cleaning and organizational standards to prevent errors, disease, infection and hazards to both humans and animals
  • ALWAYS respond with patience when faced with ignorance and remember that not all the world has seen through our eyes or cared with our hands
  • Lend assistance, instruction or advice to anyone trying to assist a wild animal in need of care
  • NEVER cage a wild animal a day longer than necessary, and always euthanize if release will never come

On her facebook page she shares pictures of wild babies that have been brought to the ranch along with the circumstances surrounding their injury or illness.  The photos show staff tenderly caring for the delicate lives they’ve been intrusted with.

When she can’t save them, she will help them find peace and freedom from pain in the only way she knows how. That’s when you see her mad, especially if the injury has resulted from something evil, like a leg trap.

What I love about this woman is her passion.  Not only will she take in, help and rehabilitate any form of wildlife, but she works hard at educating the public. Her posts will explain to you why the cute orphaned deer should NOT be brought into your home and made into a family pet.

Wild Heart Ranch doesn’t normally take in cats and dogs, but they will assist them in other ways, or provide another resource to assist the animal.

Annette King Tucker talks the talk and walks the walk.

But she’s got a little problem, her wonderful ranch is quickly outgrowing the small ten acres that surround it. Recently 40 acres across the street from the ranch went on the market, Annette is working hard to raise the needed funds to purchase the land in order to expand the ranch.

She has a chip in widget on her website, and through her website you can connect with her on her social media sites.

I’m not asking you to donate money to WHR, I’m asking you to take a moment and check out Annette King Tucker and if you (like I) think she’s making a difference, can you please share her story.

Together we can be the change.

(Author’s note, the ‘cat’ you see in the left side of the picture is Kira, a cougar that had her claws removed by a man with a pair of wire snippers.   Annette rescued her and Kira lived her life at Wild Heart Ranch, until a few months ago when she passed away.)
(I did send a message to Annette asking her to contribute to this post, but she did not respond.  If she would like the picture to be removed I will do that. )
