It’s Not a CAT!

October 2, 2014 By Jodi

My dog shits in the road too.

The other day on the way home I noticed cars slowing to a stop.  When I looked ahead, I saw a woman bent over in the street and she appeared to be picking something up.  Then I looked to the side of the road and noticed her two dogs, standing patiently waiting.  As she stood up I saw the baggie in her hand. She looked sheepishly at the cars stopped on both sides of the road as she moved back to her dogs.

A huge smile broke out on my face.

It was a beautiful fall day and I had my window down, I had to resist the urge to scream out the window, “My dog shits in the middle of the road too” with a cheerful accompanying wave.

It’s NOT  a CAT!!

In my effort to cut down on dog encounters I’ve taken to heading home at lunch time to walk Sampson and Delilah.  Knock wood, so far this is working out fairly well.

Monday afternoon we ran into one of our neighbors who lives across the street about three houses down.  She wanted to let me know the man next to her had a fisher ‘cat’ in his yard the other morning.

I may look cute and cuddly...

This news scared the bejesus out of me.  I mean, for one our first walk of the day starts around 6:00 am and it’s still dark out and staying darker every single day.  I know I walk two big dogs, but these idiots would definitely want to investigate this critter.

He may look cute, like a little bear but this sucker is mean.  He has sharp teeth and claws and yes he climbs trees!  His official name is Fisher, but for some reason most folks call him a Fisher cat.  Maybe it’s because he climbs trees.  But the neighbor told me he comes for the cats. 🙁 Either way, I sure as hell don’t want to run into him, with or without dogs.

Tuesday morning I started carrying a full-size flashlight.  (I have a little light on the visor of my ball cap, but it doesn’t give a lot of light.)  First morning out I’m on high alert and as we pass a house, I think I see something in the yard.  I shine the flashlight and two eyes stare back at me.  I’m convinced it’s either a fisher or a GRIM.  I shine the light again, the eyes are still there.  But the light is not bright enough to show me what the eyes are attached to.  So I skedaddled.

Fingers crossed a bright light shining in something’s eyes would be a good deterrent.

This new flashlight makes the dawn dance a little more complicated, for instance yesterday morning I bent down to pick up somebody’s pooping business and accidentally shone the flashlight into the upstairs of someone’s house, which set their dog to barking.  I don’t know about you, but ’round my parts the only people who shine flashlights in windows are cops or crooks.  I had to skedaddle again before they called the cops on me.

Jones Natural Chews

I ran out of the lamb lung puffs that Miss Flea sent me to help her celebrate her blogging anniversary this past July.  If you haven’t tried them yet, I’d like to remind you, these things are like Doggie CRACK!

None of my local pet stores carry the lamb lung, so I went to the Jones website and ordered two bags.  These are my “Look” and “Here” treats so I guard them very carefully.

The box came on Monday and I couldn’t get up the stairs without Delilah having her nose all up in the box.  I put it down on the floor so I could snap some photos.

What the heck do they seal these boxes with?

What the heck do they seal these boxes with?

Where can I get me some opposable thumbs?

Where can I get me some opposable thumbs?

Sorry for the blurred photos, as you can see, she was quite determined to get that crack!

Finally I took pity on her and opened it.

Finally some Jones Lamb Lung puffs!

Do I Have Dirt in my Ear? – Thursday’s Barks and Bytes

September 25, 2014 By Jodi

Do I have dirt in my ear?

So like you know how dogs like to kick stuff over their ‘business’ once they’ve done it?

I thought it was only after they had pooped, but sometimes my dogs do it after they pee.

It's not polite to leave your business uncovered.

It’s not polite to leave your business uncovered.

Sampson will pee and then kick his legs, Delilah however is one of those dogs that walk away, sometimes like 15 feet away before she kicks.  Yes, she is one of those dogs.

Considering all the conflicts we’ve had on our evening walks, I decided to change things up and whenever possible go home on my lunch and walk the dogs.  I started this Tuesday afternoon.  I took the dogs up to the field. Delilah decided to do her pooping business and walk away.  As I bent over to pick it up she kicked.  Now she’s done this to me before, but usually it just lands on my pants or in my shoes.  Sometimes Sampson is in the way and has to make a quick maneuver to avoid it.

Well this time, dirt and grass went flying and something landed in my ear.  It was dirt.

You know how you’re NOT supposed to stick your finger in your ear?  And you know that your ear while not wet, it’s kind of got that waxy thing going on?  Right.

Well now I have dirt in my ear and I’m afraid to put my finger there because I’m afraid I’ll push it in further, but what if there’s a bug in it?  I know, right.

Ever so carefully I worked at it and I did get it out, but then I kept having that feeling that something was in my ear. 🙁

Dog Collars

I’m super excited.  We won a reflective collar from a giveaway on Emma’s blog.  Did I mention it’s a collar that has the dog’s information right on the collar, no tag needed?  One would think this would be an easy choice, no?  Well picking out the color and the font is not the issue, here’s what I want your thoughts on.

Whose name should I put on the collar?  Delilah’s or mine.  You’d think that would be an easy decision?  I thought so too, until I recently read a discussion on a lab rescue page.  Considering all the dog stealing that has been going on recently, do you think it’s wise to put Delilah’s name on the collar?  I mean, I’m pretty sure anyone that picked up Delilah would be more than willing to return her, once they had her in their home for an hour or so, but is it in her best interest to have her name emblazoned for all to see?  I’m afraid some nefarious person could perhaps coax her away?  I’m torn and that is holding me up from ordering the collar.

Last by not least a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my mom.  Love you!!

Happy Birthday Grandma, don't do something I wouldn't do!

Sampson and the Two Dicks

September 18, 2014 By Jodi

Sampson sees himself as the mayor of our neighborhood, in his mind it is his job to kiss as many babies and get as many pats on the head as he possibly can.  On our walks he’s always on patrol for the possibility of interacting with people.

You can tell when he’s seen someone.  His head comes up, his ears perk up and there is a bounce in his step.  As he gets closer, he gives the appropriate greeting.

“AHHHROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”  Most people respond to this with a wave or a smile, but when he is successful, they speak to him and then he gets to pull me over so they can pet him.  Of course, there are some people who resist his charms, but that doesn’t stop him, he tries again the next time he sees them.  Usually he can wear them down.

Some dogs just have it. What can I say?

Some dogs just have it. What can I say?

On one of our weekend walks we turned a corner only to find two older gentlemen standing in the middle of the road chatting. Siriusly, the middle of the road.  I thought WTF, this isn’t going to be fun as Sampson will want to pull me into the middle of the road.  Luckily a car came and the men had to choose a side.  I could still pull this off if they chose the opposite side from us.

No such luck,  they chose our side of the road and naturally Sampson had to meet them.

“AHHHROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” said Sampson.

“Well hello there” said one of the gentlemen. Then he said, “I’m Dick and this is Dick” pointing to the other man.  Well that’s easy enough to remember I thought.

Sampson of course, now that he’d been acknowledged stopped his antics and stood quietly in the road.

Which is how I found myself standing in the road talking to two dicks.

Wait.  WHAT?  You thought it was about something different?  Get your mind out of the gutter!  What kind of blog do you think this is?

Changing topics.

I’m sure most of you have heard by now that Leroy from My Brown Newfies is very ill.

He is in hospital right now with some kind of intestinal disease.  The exact disease is yet to be determined.  He needs to be scoped to discover what exactly he’s dealing with.  As you can imagine his vet bills will be quite high.  In order to help pay for Leroy’s veterinary care a Go Fund Me account will be set up within the next couple of days.   As soon as it’s set I’ll share it here and on my Facebook page and I hope you will do the same.

In the meantime please pray (if you’re a believer) and send lots of good thoughts Leroy and Jen’s way.

UPDATE:  The Go Fund Me Page is up, you can access it HERE, please consider donating, no matter how small every little bit helps, and please, please share!!  And for those of you uncomfortable with donating money this way, you can call the hospital directly at (440) 327-8282, let them know you’d like to donate to Leroy Costello.  THANK YOU!
