My Devious Mind

January 22, 2015 By Jodi

My Devious Mind

We have a pretty nice park at the top of the street. Yes it does have a LaCrosse field and we do have to share it for about three months of the year, but it’s very easy to work around their schedule.

There are some lovely hiking trails surrounding the park.  One of the trails leads out of the park and from their, you can hike to any number of lovely areas.  The other trails are fairly short.  You could wander for some time following all the different trails or you can make a quick lunch time walk pretty easily.

Most of the trails are marked but there are some trails the deer and other wildlife have made and if you know the woods well, there’s no issue with following these other trails.

While the dogs and I absolutely adore the woods, the park does not come without its challenges.

  • As I’ve mentioned a million few times a lot of people walk their dogs off-leash up there.  I’m not without some guilt myself, as I’ve let both dogs wander free when the park seems deserted.
  • A good percentage of the dog walking people do not pick up after their pets.  The town has installed a poop station at the entrance to the park and they provide poop bags and dispose of the bags and yet, you still finds piles of poop throughout the park.
  • Local kids love to go into the park and party.  This pisses me off to no end.  Not that they party, but that they smash glass bottles, leave their debris and have bonfires.
The mess in my park.

Those are trees that have either fallen, or the kids have broken them.

I worry about animals getting a hold of the debris, or cutting themselves or worse, swallowing the broken glass and the bonfire….well some of the area around this park does not have public water, they are on wells.  Should the fire get out of control, well it could burn a neighborhood down.

When I stumble upon this mess, it gets my writer’s mind wandering as to how to rectify the problem.  I mean, apparently the kids aren’t afraid of fox, coyotes or fishers.  I’ve thought about pranking the kids.  Is it right?  No.  Is it funny?  I don’t know, you tell me.

The kids are all sitting around the bonfire, they’re swilling alcohol, smoking cigarettes, maybe a little pot.  They’re laughing, maybe telling jokes or ghost stories.

All of a sudden, they hear a chain saw start up and then the sound of a woman screaming.  The screaming gets louder, whatever it is it’s coming closer, then suddenly a woman bursts from the wood line, she’s got blood dripping from her face and she’s screaming “Help me, help me!”  She stumbles out into the field, followed by a man swinging a chainsaw.

See I told you it wasn’t right. 🙂

BUT while I was thinking about this post, I came up with another idea for a book.  Honestly, now all I have to do is write the damn things!

Styrofoam Coolers, Not Just For Beer

January 15, 2015 By Jodi

Blog the Change

Typically when I write for Blog the Change I write about dog causes, and honestly there are so many near and dear to my heart, I’m sure I could come up with another one, but today’s post is about cats.

You read that right, it’s about cats.

I was reading an article recently (why don’t I book mark these things?) where the author indicated there are far more homeless cats than there are dogs.  To me this makes sense (and please, cat people feel free to correct me if I’m wrong),  for the following reasons.

  • Cats typically aren’t as dependent on people as dogs are
  • Cats can be more independent  or sometimes more skittish than dogs
  • Cats have a hunting instinct which often times takes them away from civilization
  • Cats produce more off-spring than dogs do (one to two litters per year vs one per year for dogs) (Source  ASPCA)

What really got me thinking about this is, I saw a cat at work.  No, the cat wasn’t working.  (Although I did watch a cat catch and play with a chipmunk once, it was truly fascinating).  What I meant was I saw a cat outside the building where I work.  I was outside talking with our maintenance guy when we saw this cat approaching the garage.  I called to the cat and took a few tentative steps in its direction, but it slunk around the garage and into the woods.

I work on a busy road, but the building is in a small plaza and we are in the back.  There are woods behind us, as well as a walking trail and there are some condos/apartments on the other side of the trail, so it is possible this cat belongs there, but I don’t know.

It’s been cold here (it’s January after-all) and the poor little cat stayed on my mind.  Then we got snow and as I walked up to the door at work  I saw little cat tracks walking past it. I thought about the poor cat and wondered how can I help it?

Then I remembered a photo I saw on Facebook on how to make a shelter for a cat out of a Styrofoam cooler, I checked with building maintenance first to make sure it wouldn’t be a problem.  We discussed the location (sometimes I see kids in the parking lot cutting through or using skateboards and don’t want to make the cat a target) and agreed upon an area that houses the air conditioning units, as it’s protected by a small wall.   Next I consulted Mr. Google and headed to the store.

I bought a cooler for $3.99 at my local grocery store.

Just a cooler, you know the kind you grab to throw a six pack in on your way to the beach.

Just a cooler, you know the kind you grab to throw a six pack in on your way to the beach.

I removed the top and set it aside.

Hubby gave me a utility knife but I struggled getting the blade all the way through the Styrofoam so I used a paring knife.  (Shhh, don’t tell him, he’s always telling me I used the wrong knife for the job.) 😉

Making a feral cat house out of a Styrofoam cooler

Use your knife to cut a door.

Once the door was cut, I put the top on and flipped it upside down so the top became the bottom.  I tried using  T-pins to secure the two pieces together, but in the end I used tape.

Hubby suggested I use the cut out piece to make a type of awning over the entryway, so I used two T-pins to secure it in place.

Styrofoam Cat Shelter

I’m not sure I like the awning and I’m pretty sure the cat will care less.

I may or may not leave the awning.  My concern is it will fall down and scare the cat.

I’ve read online some people have used those reflective blankets you get for camping to line the inside of the cooler, but the suggested material for the inside is hay.  Material can get wet and freeze, but hay will dry out quickly and the cat can burrow inside the hay.  The Styrofoam will keep the cat’s body heat inside the house and help keep the cat warm.

I will place a brick or heavy rock on the top of the house to keep it from blowing away and I will face the door of the house close to one of the building walls to help keep the weather out and make the house warmer.

I also bought some cat food but decided at least for now I’m not going to feed the cat.  I don’t want it to become dependent on the food because what would happen if I found another job?  Who would feed the cat?  BUT I’m hoping once the cat starts using the house eventually I will be able to catch it and take it for vetting.

I’m also going to set one of these up in a treed area by my house, because I’ve seen cat tracks across our front steps as well as noticed a cat watching us on our morning walks.  I’m not sure if it’s a stray or not, but I’d rather try and help than not.

The whole cooler house too me less than 10 minutes to make and less than $5 for the needed materials.  It’s a quick and easy way to help the feral cat population.

For more ideas and examples of how to set up a cat shelter, check out Neighborhood Cats.  If you know of an area with a feral cat problem check out the Feral Cat Project for ways you can help.

Blogging Can Be Challenging

January 10, 2015 By Jodi

Pet Blogger Challenge Jan. 10

Welcome to the 5th Annual Pet Blogger Challenge hosted by Go Pet Friendly.

This is my third or fourth year participating in this challenge.  Seriously I could look it up, but right now I’m too lazy, so let’s just say three and jump into the questions, okay?

1. How long have you been blogging? And, for anyone stopping by for the first time, please give us a quick description of what your blog is about.

I celebrated (with no fanfare mind you) my fourth blogaversary (really, how do you spell that?) on December 1, 2014.  Heart Like a Dog is a personal blog where I write (mostly) about life with my two lovable labs, Sampson and Delilah.  At times there is drama and sadness but I do try and infuse my crazy sense of humor when sharing some of the (let’s call a spade a spade) bizarre outrageous insane situations I find myself in with these two nutty dogs.

Who you calling nutty?

Who you calling nutty?

2. Tell us one thing that you accomplished on your blog during 2014 that made you proud.

In September the Caring for Critters Round Robin took place.  Forty two bloggers participated with over fifty posts!  Those posts are all linked on the Community Page of this blog.  I’m so proud at what we accomplished together and while I’m sad when someone needs to use it, I’m so grateful the page is there for those looking for some support.

3. What lessons have you learned this year – from other blogs, or through your own experience – that could help us all with our own blogs?

Have I learned any lessons?  (Honestly, I’m quite dense sometimes.)  Can I read everyone else’s response before I answer this?

4. What have you found to be the most successful way to bring traffic to your blog, other than by writing great content?

Shit!  This is a lot harder than I remember.  Truthfully when I stopped expecting this blog to make money, I stopped worrying about the traffic.  BUT I have discovered that you have to expose your blog to many different venues.  What I mean is, don’t be afraid to try new things.  Join a different blog hop, add your voice to a Round Robin.  Also, if you have a feature on your blog you’re not loving anymore, let it go.  If your heart is in what you are doing, it will show, and it will bring traffic to your blog.

Reach out to other bloggers and bounce ideas off them.  See if you can combine your creativity.

5. What was your most popular blog post this year? Did it surprise you that it was your most popular?

My most popular post was Five Pills in One Gulp.  Don’t ask me why it was popular, maybe a lot of my readers give multiple pills to their dogs?  And yes, it did surprise me.  I have some damn funny posts and that one was serious!

6. What was your favorite blog post to write this year?

I like writing the funny posts and to me, nothing is funnier than poop, so I’d have to say, “The Grimm Business of Poopies.”

7. Has your policy on product reviews and/or giveaways changed this year?

My policy on product reviews has not changed.  I really feel like I should be paid for sharing a product with my readers, HOWEVER if I really love the product or the incentive is great I will do a  review.  This past year I think I had four reviews, which is a lot for me.

If you do reviews, what do you find works best, and what doesn’t work at all?

If I’m not getting paid to do a review, I do like to be able to offer something to my readers in the way of a giveaway.

If you don’t do reviews, is this something you’d like to do more of? What hurdle is getting in your way?

8. What’s your best piece of advice for other bloggers?

Stay true to yourself and if you aren’t loving what you are doing, don’t be afraid to try something new.

9. What goals do you have for your blog in 2015?

Ideally it would grow, really, really big.  So big I’d be making mad money and I could stay home and spend time with the pups.  Baring the blog exploding, I think it would have to be continue to develop and grow my readership.

10. If you could ask the pet blogging community for help with one challenge you’re having with your blog, what would it be?

How do I get my blog to grow really, really big? 🙂
