One Fell Swoop – Barks and Bytes

May 7, 2015 By Jodi

Once upon a time this was my treat bag.

Dog walking essentials

The basic dog walking essentials…cell phone, house keys,  pepper blaster and treat bag. Only thing missing? Poop bags!

I never actually LOVED this treat bag. It had a draw string to close it and clipped to the waistband of my pants with a small plastic clip. I had it fall off on more than one occasion and had to trace our path back to find it. Still it served its purpose, until the Diva of Destruction got hold of it.

She chewed holes in the lining so all the little crumbs and (and sometimes bits of food as well) worked their way between the lining and the exterior. It made it super hard to clean that sucker out.

I put get a new treat bag on my to-do list. I shopped them online, but you can’t really tell the quality and function of a product online, and those rare occasions in the pet store, it simply slipped my mind.

Finally income tax season rolled around and as I had cause to be in a an awesome little pet shop/training center, I purchased a new one. I put the big pieces of treats in the new bag and threw the old bag on the dining room table. I passed it every day and one day in passing I thought, gee, I’m surprised she hasn’t discovered that bag yet.

But did I move it or throw it out?

No, of course not. This is how I set my dog up to fail.

Bad dog owner.

One day last week when I came home the treat bag was on the floor in the living room.

Notice the Delilah modifications.

She had made some modifications. Specifically I think her goal was to have treats drop out a regular intervals as we walked. Genius really if you think about it. I mean it’s every Labrador’s dream to have an unending supply of noms.

A closer look at modifications.

I think she went a little too far though, I mean the whole idea would be to have the treats come out regularly, not in one fell swoop.

Hickory Dickory Dee – Barks and Bytes

April 30, 2015 By Jodi

Tuesday night I was busy in the kitchen when a shadow in the backyard caught my eye.  My faithful sidekick, Delilah the Velcro dog was with me, so I oh so casually made my way to the window to check it out.

It was a cat!

I contemplated opening the door and letting Delilah chase it off (I mean, this was the kitty that stalked us not too long ago,) then I thought about shooing it away myself, but I noticed the cat was inspecting the chipmunk holes and thought, maybe this is a good thing. I left the cat alone.

As discreetly as I could, (so as not to alert the D-Dog) I kept tabs on the cat.  The cat inspected one area then another and finally I couldn’t see him anymore.

A short time later Hubby went outside to start the grill and the dogs and I went with him. Hubby and I were discussing which trees we wanted to cut down when all of a sudden Delilah made a mad rush in one area of the yard.

Shit she must have found the cat!

Sure enough, there was Delilah, fur up and Mr./Ms. Kitty all puffed up, high in the tree.

Cat stuck in tree

The colors are lovely, but I felt bad for the kitty.

I brought the dogs inside and went back out.  “Here kitty, kitty” I called.

“Meow” said the cat.

“Come down here kitty” I said, “The bad doggie has gone back inside the house.”

“Meow” said the cat.

“Can you bring the ladder up here?” I shouted to Hubby.

“I’m not climbing that tree.”

“Can you bring the ladder up here for me?” I asked.

“You’re not climbing that tree.”

“Why not?”

No response.

I contemplated the tree. Hell I can climb, it’s tall but not that tall. I even like climbing, I climbed to the top of the rope tower three years ago when I took my grandson to the dinosaur park hauling him up behind me. I eyed the tree again. Hubby stood there eyeing me.

Then Hubby walked away.

“Where are you going?” I asked Hubby.

“To get the ladder.”

Good man.

BUT the ladder wouldn’t reach the tree because there were smaller trees around it and they had too many branches, which impeded the ladder’s placement.

Maybe the next door neighbor would let us attempt a rescue from his yard? I marched over in my PJ’s and knocked on his door.

He wasn’t home.

I marched back home and grabbed a box of cat food and a small dish.  I shook the box and added a small amount to the bowl, I set it in front of kitty on a stump and tried again.

“Here kitty, yum, yum,” I said.

“No thanks, I’m set here” said kitty, except to me it just sounded like, “Meow.”

Cat stuck in tree

He inched his way down, settling himself in the crook of the tree.

Darkness fell. I checked a couple of times before I went to bed, shining a flashlight in the direction of the tree and each time, two little eyes peered out at me from the dark.

I felt horrible, but it looked like kitty had settled in for the night.

When I got up yesterday morning the first thing I did was check on kitty.

He/she was still there.

I felt bad, this is a young cat and here it spent the entire night stuck in a tree.

Then the crows started in.  Those fucking crows, it reminded me of the time when poor little Bob was stuck in the tree.

I made a plan. If the cat was still in the tree when I came home at lunch, I would text my neighbor and ask him to help me rescue the cat after work. Or I would call animal control, or the fire department.

I guess the crows must have worked their magic because when I checked at lunch, kitty was gone.

So by now you must be wondering about the title of this post. Well to commemorate the event, I wrote a poem.

He was so afraid of her bite

He stayed there all night

Baby Come Back – Barks and Bytes

April 23, 2015 By Jodi

Monday we took the bandage off Sampson’s foot and sent a picture of it over to the vet.  As it happened the vet was sick and didn’t get back to me until yesterday.

Unfortunately the vet felt Sampson’s nail wasn’t healing the way it should and suggested surgery, so I dropped him off around 2:30.

To keep my mind off of Sampson, I went home and grabbed Delilah for a nice long walk.

Spring hasn’t fully arrived here and the floor of the path was a carpet of leaves.  Our feet crunched along the well known path as we made our way in the warm spring sun.

Woods

You can’t tell, but the trees are just beginning to bud.

It always amazes me what a difference a walk is when you only have one dog.  This dog, the one I yell at, who pulls relentlessly, chomps my fingers when I give her a treat and basically acts like a crazy dog when walking with Sampson, is a dream to walk by herself.

Chocolate Lab

You’re talking about me, aren’t you?

Just look at that loose leash!

We hiked the main trails and around the field and then a lap around the block as well.

Afterwards she sacked out on the couch, tired and content.

Sampson got picked up about 5:45. His paw is bandaged again, and he’s on Carprofen for another two weeks or so as well as an antibiotic.  He was panting a lot when I picked him up and wouldn’t lie down in the car.  It almost broke my heart because he was trembling so badly.

Once we got home and he lay down, I snuggled up next to him and held him for a few minutes.

I offered him half his meal and he refused.  I offered him Kefir and oatmeal and he declined those as well and yet he stood in the kitchen expectantly.  I offered him some liver wurst and he at a few pieces, enough to get some of his meds in.  The antibiotic is supposed to be taken with food and three pieces of liver wurst just didn’t seem like enough, so he’ll get his first dose this morning, providing he eats his breakfast.

I called the vet to see if it was normal and was told it was.  I was also told there might be some pacing and anxiety during the night.

As of this writing he seemed much calmer, and had eaten a few treats and made an attempt at his Kong.  So fingers crossed we had a decent night.

As you can tell from this boring and humorless post, my Mojo is still MIA. Please if you see it in your travels, send it back.

Baby come back!!
