Batten Down The Hatches….Day Two Hundred, Seventy

August 27, 2011 By Jodi

Irene is coming to town.

At least that is what the weather forecasters are predicting.  Even though it looks like she will be down-graded to a tropical storm by the time she hits us, it is still serious business.  Really, in Connecticut we are normally in the snow business.  Yes occasionally we get the tornado, or hurricane but it’s just not something we do regularly.

The last significant hurricane we had here (that I remember) was Gloria back in 1985.  We were without power for a week.  A week.  Seven days.  168 hours give or take.  Thankfully we were able to leave our homes and with the neighborhood effort, we somehow managed to maintain a semblance of clean.

I was reminded of another hurricane we had after Gloria, but it didn’t make that big of an impact on me, because I don’t remember it.

So we are battening down the hatches in preparation for the big deal.

What have we done?

The puppies were walked first thing this morning, there is a good probability that we may not be able to walk tomorrow, in which case I will be thinking of games we can play. 🙂

Everything that was on the deck, that could be moved inside has been.

Anything that can’t be moved inside has been strapped down.

At the advice of the weather channel, we have filled some jugs along with plastic bags with water.  These are tucked nicely into our freezer.

We have a lot of large trees around the house, specifically over the bedroom. So we have decided if necessary we will sleep in my scrapbook/craft room and to that end we have set up make-shift sleeping areas.

We are as prepared as we can be.

If you are on the East Coast, we hope you are too.

Be safe.

Follow-Up Friday…Day Two Hundred, Sixty Nine

August 26, 2011 By Jodi

Follow-Up Friday….

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back – Author’s Note

Delilah’s path of destruction has continued this week.  She ate a can of Crisco (not the can itself but the shortening inside,) a bag of barbecue pretzels and today she destroyed a can of Salmon Oil.

Yes, I have two lovely spots of oil on the carpets, and the dogs lick them.

She has run off  on three separate walks compelling me to pull out the 30 foot leash and keep her on it until we have passed the dangerous spot.  The leash severely limits where we can walk, because it has a tendency to get snagged on bushes and trees.

To top it all off, she absolutely REFUSES to sit and remain calm when the food is out for clicker training, she won’t stay down for more than 30 seconds; she either moves to a sitting position or moves her position totally.

She is frustrating me beyond belief and I don’t know what to do. 🙁

Fly Fly Away…..Day Two Hundred, Sixty Eight

August 25, 2011 By Jodi

Last month my friend Mindy and I went to a NASCAR race.   The racetrack is located in a very rural setting, so we found a shuttle to take us to and from the track.

On the way back from the race as the bus bumped and banged down the winding country road, and the obnoxious drunk guy farted in the seat behind me, we passed some horses in a corral.  The horses had fly masks on; at the time I didn’t know what they were and from my seat on the bus I stared with horror at these horses and wondered why someone would be trying to keep the horses from seeing!

I googled it as soon as I got home and found out why the horses eyes were covered.  I didn’t think about the fly masks again….until today.

I noticed today on our walk the gnats that I protect myself from by my screen hat, are congregating on the dogs…around their eyes.  They rimmed the lower lid of Delilah’s eyes in such a way it looked like she had fancy eye lashes.

From what I could tell, I don’t think they were biting her, but it really grossed me out and I wiped them away as frequently as she would allow.

But it made me think about those fly masks again.

I wonder how the dogs would look with the screen hat on?
