How Did The Deer Fare?…Day Three Hundred, Forty Two

November 7, 2011 By Jodi

Since I had no power Saturday morning I took the dogs for a long walk to help fill my time.

I mentioned to Hubby after the walk, “Branches and limbs continue to fall up there; I know this because I am clearing and moving what I can as I notice them.”

Hubby said, “I’m sure there are, it’s been very windy lately.” His brows furrowed “I wonder how the deer fared?”

I shook my head quickly back and forth, “I don’t know, I wonder where they go?”

Yesterday power was back on so I took the dogs for a long walk so they would be good and tired so I could clean.  🙂

I put their fluorescent vests on because I was planning on taking them on a less traveled (by us anyway) trail.

There is one area where there are deer trails, and you can manage to wind your way through this denser area if you have to, normally I stay clear of it unless my hiking buddy is with me. I prefer to stay on the well traveled paths. 🙂  Sampson normally pays pretty close attention to this dense area, his head is high with his ears alert.

Since Delilah is attached to me by the 30 footer, she doesn’t get the opportunity to run off nearly as much as she would like.

Normally they are spotting chipmunks and squirrels, I know this because they typically don’t go very far and tend to stop and sniff right around a tree base or a rock.

Yesterday Sampson snapped to attention and dashed off into the woods; normally I let him get a bit of a run then call him back, but he wasn’t coming; then I saw the white tail of the deer.  Delilah and I waited on the path, with me calling him intermittently until he came back.

A short time later he took off again in about the same spot and I thought things were cool until I heard the sound of something large scrambling through the brush, and there was another flash of white tail.

Today on our walk Sampson chased a deer again, in a different spot. I think we are safe in telling Hubby that at least one deer survived Alfred in our neck of the woods. 😉

Back To Normal…Day Three Hundred, Forty One

November 6, 2011 By Jodi

After seven nights and almost seven full days, we are back on the grid.  Our electricity is on!!

It was on when we got home last night and after turning the heat on and cleaning a few things we ran out to the grocery store for dog treats and I picked up a few things for breakfast.

It was so good to sleep in my bed last night and not have to wake up every two or three hours to load the fireplace or fight Delilah for my sleeping spot. 🙂

While sounds of chain saws and generators resonate outside, inside a different sound can be heard.

DUH-LIE-LAH…yes we are cooking inside again and Delilah is up to her old tricks.  She continues to evade my efforts to photograph her licking the pans on the stove even though I caught her there twice today, I just wasn’t quick enough with the camera.

She was kind enough to pose with what was left of the banana she stole this morning.  (Yes, it’s there, look closely at the wet mark on her pillow, you can just make out the stem.)

A bit later I wasn’t quite quick enough to photograph her licking the chicken wrappings in my make-shift garbage bag.

Yes things have returned to normal in Casa de Stone, but there are still almost 100,000 people in our state without power, so I won’t complain. 😉

Sofa Battle…Day Three Hundred, Forty

November 5, 2011 By Jodi

The light company representative couldn’t deliver last night, so we spent night seven sleeping in the living room.  I am currently at my daughter’s house but heard from a friend that some areas around me got their power back today.  Fingers and toes crossed that our power is on when we head home tonight. 🙂

Round about night four, I gave up sleeping on the futon because Sampson was hogging the entire mattress. 🙂

Seriously it is large enough for three of us....

Since that night, I’ve been waging a battle for the dog’s sofa with Delilah.   It would seem Delilah isn’t content to share the futon mattress with Sampson, she wants the couch that I’ve been sleeping on.

At bedtime when I settle in on the sofa, Delilah commences to staring at me. She sits on the floor and stares, when I scootch my back against the back of the sofa and invite her up for a snuggle, she ignores me and lies down on the futon.

AND……when I get up during the night, which is at least three or four times to feed the fire, Delilah snags the sofa, curling up contentedly against my pillow. 🙂
