Snarky Dogs

We had our first play date with another dog at our house yesterday. 

I was a little nervous as to how Delilah would react, so we wanted to introduce the dogs in the best way possible.  I’ve heard all kinds of ways to introduce dogs, but this is what we decided to do.

Since the new dog, Pheebs was female we introduced Sampson first.  As I’ve mentioned previously Sampson is very good off leash so Hubby brought him outside and made him wait while our friend got out of the car.  Then he released Sampson to welcome our guest.

Then Sampson noticed Pheebs in the car so our friend opened the door and Pheebs jumped out.   After a quick greeting, she started running around the yard and then she ran up to the front door where Delilah was waiting.  When she approached the door Delilah started gnashing her teeth, barking and growling.  🙁  This really wasn’t a surprise because Delilah tends to be snarky with other dogs when there is something between them.

I opened the door and Delilah came charging out, but after a quick few seconds where both girls stood stiffly still sniffing each other they were off and running.

I opened the gate to the back yard and all three dogs ran inside, where they continued checking each other out.  Then we opened the door from inside the house and they all came inside.

As it turns out I didn’t need to worry about Delilah at all.  She and Pheebs were fast friends, they played like Sampson and Delilah usually play.  Everywhere Delilah went Pheebs was right behind her.  🙂  It was so cute.

Sampson was the snarky one. 🙁

What’s that you say, you don’t have a favorite charity?  Well let me introduce you to one of MY favorite charities, Labs 4 Rescue. 

While Delilah did not come to us through this particular rescue, I’ve recently gotten to know Ann who does all of the placements for this wonderful rescue.   When one of my readers got in touch with me about a beautiful lab that was being neglected, I didn’t know what to do.   The guy was going to put his dog on Craig’s List for $100.

I was in a panic.  I got on the horn with Ann, who told me some not so nice things that can happen to some dogs that are sold this way, she agreed to give the guy a call and see if she could convince him to surrender the dog.   

She did.

Ann and our friend Dave went out and picked up Ranger, brought him to foster care, gave him some training and I am happy to report that Ranger has found his forever home.  He is now living on ten acres somewhere in Massachusetts. 🙂 

Ranger was lucky, his story had a happy ending but not everyone’s does.  Some dogs will be spending the holidays in shelters, or worse will be spending their last days in shelters.  Please help me make a difference this year, go to this link and follow me (and other bloggers if you’d like) on Twitter.

What's Your Sleep Number?

Every night around 9 PM the dogs get their stuffed Kongs, after about 20 to 25 minutes of working at them, Hubby and I will offer to help, because sometimes those baby carrots get stuck together and they can’t work them out. 🙂

My niece slept over last night in order for us to be up bright and early for our traditional Christmas shopping.   Because she was here last night we deviated slightly from our routine.

Sampson apparently got tired of waiting for someone to come and help him and he brought his Kong out and threw it at my feet. 🙂

Sampson absolutely adores my niece so he refused to go to bed when Hubby, Delilah and I headed off to dreamland.  I would have thought I’d have a much better sleep without him plastered up against me in the bed, but that wasn’t the case. 

I woke up with an aching back.  I guess my sleep number is adjusted to accommodate an 85 pound lab.
