Once Upon a Time

September 5, 2013 By Jodi

Today we are joining our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs blog for is This ‘N That Thursday.  Because some days you have a little of this or a little of that.  It’s anything goes day!

Many thanks to our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs blog.

Once upon  a time, in a land faraway (Florida) there lived a beautiful Princess (well actually she wasn’t really a “princess” she was a German Shepherd dog, but she was named Princess) who lived with her loving owner.

One day her vet (a doctor for dogs) found a lump on Princess’ mammary gland.  He aspirated it (drew some fluid) but couldn’t tell for sure if it was cancerous.

The good and wise vet said, “This tumor has to go.”

This decree put Princess’ poor owner (Denise) into despair.  The surgery was going to cost a lot of money that she did not have, but how could she not help her sweet and beautiful Princess?

Princess 2

Princess

Luckily for Princess and Denise, there are some good and kind people at a the Magic Bullet Fund who agreed to pay a portion of Princess’ surgery, but Denise has to raise the rest.  As of this writing she is only $419 short of the $1,600.00 needed!!  The link to donate is here, Princess’ story is the third one on the page.

The rest of the story.

Denise is actually the cousin to one of Blogville’s own, Donna from Donna and the Dogs.  Donna has been working on putting a GSD calendar together to help Denise raise the remaining funds, unless we can raise the funds first.  The good thing is the fund is set up so you can donate any amount!  Why the other night when I was struggling to figure it out (come on, you know how challenged I can be) Donna went in to check and donated another $1, just to check and see if it was working.

So can you spare $1?  Maybe you can forgo your Starbucks coffee today and donate $3.  (How much does a Starbucks coffee cost anyway? I’m cheap, I make my own.)

If you don’t have cash to spare, it’s okay, you can still help.  All you need to do is to share Princess’ story on your social media sites.

What do you say?  Are you up for a challenge?

Oh and just because I can, here’s another cute photo of Princess.

Whadda ya waitin' for? Start sharing!

I’ll Take Things You See on a Walk for $10 Alex

September 4, 2013 By Jodi

I got my love of walking from my Grandfather.  So many cherished childhood memories involve walking the neighborhood with him.  (My love of thunder and lightening storms comes from him as well.)

The most important thing my grandfather taught me about walking was to keep my head down, because sometimes you find money.

Except I walk in the woods now, so mostly I’m watching out for hazards, such as roots, rocks, branches, poop and sometimes animals.  I also have to keep my head up to watch for other people, dogs, spider webs and wild animals.  It’s a fine line trying to keep my head up as well as keeping my head down.  Many is the time I’ve tripped over a root or rock.

Some walks are better than others.  It’s just the nature of the beast.

Take last Friday for instance.  Sampson, Delilah and I had just stepped into the field and Delilah was sniff, sniff, sniffing around.  I can always tell when she’s about to dive into something and sure enough, “Eck!  Leave it!” I screamed just as she dropped.  Sometimes I can see what she’s rolled in, other times I can’t.  Unfortunately for me, this was one of those times when I could.  Actually I looked down and saw the frog’s legs.

Ewwwwww.

I normally rinse the dogs off after a walk but rolling in frog legs meant shampoo because there was no way she’s going in my house with dead frog all smushed in her fur.

Le sigh.

We walked around the field and headed into the woods, then I noticed something else had caught the attention of both dogs.  Looking down I saw a smashed bird egg, sadly I could see the little embryo of the bird still inside the egg.  (If you’re not grossed out by such things, you can see the photo of the egg here.  Just scroll down past the really cute photos of my dogs.)

This is turning out to be one of those walks I thought to myself as I bent down and gently scooped the egg up into a plastic baggie.

A bit further along, I’m pretty sure Sampson was about to eat something vile, so I “Eck! ecked” again and while I was busy distracting Delilah from the eck Sampson was busy investigating this.

All from Camera 8-4-13 004 I was fairly certain it was a box turtle, but I always worry about snappers so I turned to tell Sampson to “leave it.”  I was so busy trying to distract the dogs and keep them out of trouble, that I almost missed this.

All from Camera 8-4-13 009 There was a book of matches not too far from it, so I’m assuming that someone went into their pocket to pull out the matches to smoke a cigarette and must have dropped their money.  Serves them right for lighting a match in the woods. 😀

I figure it was the Universe’s way of telling me to relax a little and enjoy my surroundings.

A few minutes later, I noticed a couple of trees had begun to turn their spring coats to the glorious colors of fall.

All from Camera 8-4-13 007

Can you see it?  The way some of the leaves have turned  yellow?

All from Camera 8-4-13 006

My footsteps a little lighter, my heart a little happier I headed for home.

Little Feet, Big Hearts

September 3, 2013 By Jodi

Today I’d like to share a special girl with you.  Her name is Nyla.

Nyla profile pic

On the surface, Nyla’s story is like so many other dogs in today’s society. She comes from a home with a human mom and dad, human siblings, a dog sister (who has gone to the bridge) and a cat brother.

Nyla2

Like so many dogs in today’s society, her owners are moving and their new residence doesn’t take dogs.  Her owner intended on euthanizing Nyla, but had a last minute change of heart and desperately began calling around looking for a rescue to take her.

Thankfully her owner found Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue, and the loving heart of Jen Wemmell.

Vet records however, tell a different story.  Nyla had not been kept up to date on her vaccinations and she’d been repeatedly bred.  Nyla was a breeding a machine.

Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue took Nyla in on August 10th, this beautiful little girl was adopted out almost immediately and then within two weeks she was returned.  Her new owner felt they didn’t have the time to give to Nyla, so according to the rescue’s contract, Nyla was returned.  Jen has since found a foster home for Nyla, but this confused little girl needs a forever home.

Nyla 3

Nyla is a 5 year old female Blue Nose Pit Bull, Champagne in color.  She is spayed, and up to date on all her vaccinations.  She has lived with small children, other dogs and cats.  She seems to be a well-rounded, happy dog despite the curves life has thrown at her.

About two weeks ago I had the opportunity to speak with Jen Wemmell about Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue.

Jen is no stranger to rescue, she’s been rescuing and re-homing dogs for years.  She’s never had a problem re-homing a dog, until she started asking for a fee.  And believe me, compared to some rescues her fee is very minimal – about $200, even though some of her dogs need treatments that cost much more than that.

Little Feet, Big Heart Rescue has filed for 501 (C)(3) status which is currently pending.  In the meantime all of the care and expense for these dogs come out of Jen’s own pocket or from donations.

We talked about ways of fund-raising for rescue and while I had a couple of suggestions for her, I’m woefully lacking in terms of how rescues solicit funds.  BUT I did tell Jen that I had some awesome readers that are far savvyer than I am.  I’m hoping some of you might have some ideas you could share, that could help this newly founded, but destined for great things rescue get some much needed donations.

In the meantime, today is the day I ask you to share this post, in hopes of finding Nyla her forever home.
