BLOGVILLE ROCKS This ‘N That Thursday

November 7, 2013 By Jodi

Today we join our friends at 2 Brown Dawgs and Ruckus the Eskie for This ‘N That Thursday.

Calendar Fundraiser

By now most of you in the continental United States should have received your calendars.  (My apologies to my Canadian and international friends, I sent them the quickest way I could.) They came out awesome didn’t they?  And it’s all thanks to Julie at the Daily Dog Blog!

Thank you Julie, you rock!

So here’s the final dilly.  After collecting all monies, including donations (thank you Donna) I ended up ordering 100 calendars.  Minus shipping and processing (and miscellaneous PayPal fees) I was left with $1,261.19!!

Of course it’s bitter sweet as you know because Benny lost his fight just a few weeks ago.

 Run fast, run free Benny.

I just want to take a minute to thank you all, each and every one of you for supporting this fundraiser, for entering, voting, promoting and purchasing.  I wish I could hug each and every one of you!

You all rock!!

Run Fast, Run Free Norman

On another sad note, Norman of Sand Spring Chesapeakes (Mr. August in our calendar) went to the BRIDGE on Tuesday night.  His mom, JoAnn has a beautiful tribute to him on her blog today, but make sure to grab a box of tissues before you head over.  I literally bawled my make-up off.

Custom Portrait Giveaway

So happy news in the beginning of the blog, sad news in the middle.  Let’s end on a happy shall we?

Do you have any portraits of your pets?  Personally I don’t, although I do have a couple of pictures that were printed to look like paintings.  And I love them!

I would also love a custom painting of my two favorite pupsters and so I’m going to enter a contest to win a custom painting.  And the best part is, you can too!!

So there’s this artist, AJ Emm (go ahead look at it, you know you want to) and she does these amazing paintings.  Check out the one she did of Koly and Felix from Kol’s Notes.

ANYHOO, Kol’s Notes is having a give-away of one of these custom paintings!  Siriusly you guys, there are only 47 more shopping days until Christmas.  If you aren’t giving out calendars, have you considered a custom portrait?

And if you don’t want a portrait of your fur baby (really?  WTF is wrong with you?) she does people portraits too.

If you order a portrait and you win?  AJ will refund your money or give you a second portrait at no charge!

Amazeballs, right?

BUT WAIT, there’s more.

How about a 25% discount on a custom portrait?  I know right? It feels like Christmas is already here!

You won’t see this discount code floating around just anywhere.  There are only a few of us bloggers who have it.

What is it?

Oh yeah, you need that right?  So to get your 25% discount, you need to type UNICORN when you purchase.   Why UNICORN  you ask?  Because UNICORNS rock!

Enter here.

It’s Not a Toomah!

November 6, 2013 By Jodi

In Monday’s post I shared about my cautious approach to vaccinating my dogs.  One of the big reasons I’m super careful is I’ve heard stories of dogs having lumps at their vaccine sites and eventually those lumps becoming cancerous.

Do I have documentation? NO.  No I do not, but I prefer to air on the side of caution.  One of Sampson’s first set of vaccines left a lump just below the base of his tail.

For years.

It really freaked me out.

Which is why whenever I find a lump on my dog, I have it aspirated.  It’s a simple procedure that requires inserting a needle into the lump, removing some cells and looking at them under the microscope.  The vet does this procedure right in the office with little to no discomfort to your dog.

You on the other hand, if you are anything at all like me, will be squirming like a worm on the end of a hook.

Thankfully, the vets can tell immediately whether the lump is simply a fatty tumor or something more sinister.

Sampson currently has two fatty tumors.  One on his side and one just to the left of his right paw pit. (Pawpit.  It sounds like something a preaching dog would use.  **giggles**)

The one on his side is innocuous and we will probably never have anything done with that, but the one near his paw pit needs to be removed.  And the reason for that, is if you’ve ever seen a lumpy lab, you know that some of these fatty tumors can be quite large.  Our vet is concerned if the tumor begins to grow, it will impeded his mobility.

And that would not be a good thing.

Sadly so many of the dogs I hear about today are dealing with far more than fatty tumors.  In fact, Blogville has lost some of our own to the dreaded “C” word.

Cancer.

Give Cancer the Paw

So today we’re joining Jackie from Pooch Smooches and Peggy from Peggy’s Pet Place in a blog hop that we hope will spread awareness, support and hope for all those whose lives are or have been affected by cancer.

It’s not a TOOMAH!

Well actually Sampson, it is a tumor, but thankfully it’s a fatty tumor.

They’re All Urgent

November 5, 2013 By Jodi

Today is Tuesday’s Tails Blog hop hosted by Dogs ‘N Pawz.

Dogs N Pawz

I really like the idea of Tuesday’s Tails blog hop featuring shelter animals, but I have to tell you the truth.  Looking through all these homeless animals and choosing only one to showcase is hard for me.

The animal control organizations in CT (as I’m sure they are everywhere) are full.  Our larger cities, the ones where they have more poverty and crime are really overwhelmed.  And the majority of these dogs are pit mixes.

I have nothing against pit mixes, (but I have a problem with people indiscriminately breeding them and then dropping them at the shelter where they may or may not have an opportunity to survive.) But that is a post for another day.

My point is it’s rare you come across a dog that is not a pit mix in one of our ‘inner’ cities.

The other big thing is that most of our animal control offices aren’t no kill shelters, so most of the dogs listed are urgent.

This little gal is a Boxer/Lab mix.

11-8-13

Here is what her Petfinder page says about her.

Approximately 3 years old….approximately 55 pounds.  Very friendly girl.  Affectionate.  Great with dogs she has met.  Great on leash.  Tail never stops wagging!  Loves to give kisses.  NOT hyper…pretty laid back.

Her legal day of adoption is Friday, November 8th.  It’s also the day she can be euthanized.  She is currently at the City of Hartford’s animal shelter and she could use your help.

Her adoption fee is $50 for in-state residents and $5 for out of state.  Contact information is on her Petfinder page.

Many thanks to Lisa at Dogs ‘N Pawz for creating a blog hop to help shelter animals.  if you feel inclined, please share.
