It’s All Fun and Games Until the Dog Barks at 1:30 AM

June 3, 2018 By Jodi

I’ve been living with a cold for the last week and a half. You know when you’re sick, you always have a day where you say, “This is the worst I’ve felt,” and usually after that day, you turn the corner and start feeling better?

I had three days in a row, where I thought that was the worst day.

Actually, the nights were worst. I’d fall asleep reading and as soon as I woke up, shut off the light, and lay down…I’d start coughing.

An uncontrollable, dry, tickling cough.

The first night it happened, I woke up at 1:30 in the morning, trying to cough up a lung. The second I started coughing, Delilah barked at me.

She barked. At me.

She was in her dog bed, on the floor, so I told her, “It’s okay, it’s only me coughing.” Wheezed out between coughs.

I coughed again.

She growled, got up, turned around in her bed, and lay back down.

I coughed.

She barked again.

I told her again, that it was just me.

This went on for about two minutes. Me coughing, her barking at me.

Like it was dueling banjos or something.

Finally, I got up and grabbed a cough drop, propped myself up with a pillow and tried to go back to sleep.

Delilah got up and thought, hey, I think I’ll climb on the bed with Mom and Sampson.

I put my hand up. “Go lie down, you aren’t climbing up next to me so you can bark at me every time I cough.”

I’m just sleeping peacefully and mom decides it’s duet time. She starts barking, what’s a girl supposed to do?

I can laugh about this now, I can assure you, I wasn’t laughing about it at 1:30 Tuesday morning.

You make me laugh (or smile,) the sweet, funny, loving things my dogs do that bring a smile to my face, or a laugh to my lips.

What did your pet do that made you laugh or smile this week?

Lol 😂Merlin made me proud today. We took him to the foreshore and he walked in the water by himself. He hates water and is known to walk around puddles and jump ovee a trickle of water on the ground. Maybe one day my lab will be a water dog.

I think D was trying to scare that cold out of you. When in doubt, bark at it. Or pee on it. I think she made the right choice.

    Love and licks,

Sounds like Delilah was mad at you for waking her up! Lila just non-compassionately leaves the room when we’re sick. I hope you’re feeling better.

Coughing, like many human activities, must seem strange to dogs.

I hope you are feeling better! That must have been quite a surprise when Delilah barked back at you. I wonder what Sampson thought about a duet in the middle of the night.

Who can blame Delilah? She didn’t want her sleep disturbed either. She was just telling you to be quiet. LOL. But seriously, hope you are feeling better now! There is nothing worse than a spring cold and that one sounds like a doozy. 🙁

Maybe she was asking where’s the Nightquil, Mom…I’ll go fetch it for you.

Middle of the night stuff always seems so much worse than if the same thing happens during the day, doesn’t it?

Oh Delilah! She’s such a silly girl. I hope you’re feeling better now!
