No Dogs On the Bed – Throw Back Thursday

May 4, 2017 By Jodi

It’s hard to believe, but when this little pumpkin first came home, Hubby said, “No dogs on the bed. He has a crate, he can sleep in there.”

From the minute I snuggled him, he and I set out to break that rule. What can I say? We like to dance to our own drum.

Sampson Stone, three weeks old.

Three-week-old Sampson Stone. Can you stand the cuteness?

While I think crate training is an amazing tool to help teach dogs the house rules, I hated having him in the crate at night. When he first came home and didn’t know where he was supposed to pee, he HAD to be in the crate when we weren’t there to supervise. I worked full-time, and was gone from the house 8 hours a day, and so it seemed cruel to put him in the crate for 6 or 7 hours at night.

Like a ball and a blank can replace a nice, warm Mama. What the actual woof?

I started staying up late. I’d fall asleep on the couch and then I’d wake up at 12:00 or 1:00 and put him in the crate.

Then I coaxed Hubby into letting him snuggle with me in the mornings after Hubby got up to get ready for work.

Thankfully, Hubby started work super early, so he left the house around 5:00 – 5:30. This meant he got up at 3:30.

Now I had Sampson’sย overnight time in the crate down to about 3 1/2 hours.

This went on for about a year. Then, as it happened, our daughter was getting married in Florida, and of course, we all went.

When we drive long trips, we like to start late at night, early in the morning. As I recall, we left about 1:00 am.ย  Sampson was all cuddled up in the back seat snoozing and then the cutest thing happened.

3:30 rolled around, and just like clock work, my little puppy crept his way to the front and laid his head on my arm that was resting on the armrest. He knew it was cuddle time.

We had rented a house for our daughter’s wedding, because we were there for the week before and the week after, and had a lot of last minute items to attend to.

Since we weren’t in OUR bed, I convinced Hubby to let Sampson sleep in the bed WITH us.

Now it’s a lonely night for me, when Sampson chooses to sleep somewhere else.

I will take as much of this as I can get.

My mom tried forever to get dogs into the bed. For many years, before my time, no dogs were even allowed in the bedroom, but that changed with me sleeping on the floor in my bed next to Mom in her own bed. Then with Bailie finally dogs got in bed. I still sleep in my own bed because I did that for seven years, but Bailie and Madison both sleep in the big bed with mom and she loves it. I think they love it too.

Callie used to sleep on the bed with me – except when she was recovering from her ACL surgeries – and I miss feeling that sweet puppy breath on my face. Shadoow sleeps nearby, but she rarely gets on the bed any more. Ducky still sleeps in her crate. She feels safe in there, and I don’t have to worry about arguments between her and Shadow.

When I first got Rye and she couldn’t be lose with Barley yet, I’d go into the spare room with her after taking her out early, early in the morning and we’d snuggle up in bed for a couple hours before it was time to officially get up. That is still the only time of day she’s ever really still and snuggly. I’m glad that you and Sampson wore down your husband!

I love the way your mind works. I love devious minds like mine. How can anyone resist that puppy face?

So cute! With our first dog, we started out trying to get her to sleep in the crate… but she’d start banging on it and screaming to get out at about 3 a.m. Since we lived in an apartment, I wanted to keep her quiet so started letting her come in the bed with us – we never went back! Now the hubs begs Rita to sleep with us, but most nights she goes off on her own for a while. She doesn’t get in bed with us until it starts to get really cool in the wee hours. I do usually wake to find her snuggled up next to the hubs, which makes them both very happy. ๐Ÿ™‚

It makes me happy he is sleeping with you! Phod will come up for snuggles but won’t sleep. Hailey likes to take up most of the bed:)

Oh my gosh, he was so cute!! (and still is of course). I’ve always wanted the dogs in the bed with us, even when they are such bed hogs.
Luke likes to sleep in the chair that’s in the bedroom sometimes though, and I hate it. I’m always trying to coax him to come into bed with us when he does that!

Being so long without a cuddle is not a good thing, for us cats or our doggie pals. It’s nice that you have reached an accord in life that means you can all be a big happy family, but also have bounds if need be.

What a loving pup! Kitty wasn’t cuddly at all – I was lucky if she let me pet her for more than a few minutes. When I adopted Bear, he wanted to be on me all the time and it made me uncomfortable. It was obvious that he needed that closeness and affection – so I decided to make it work. Now, I don’t feel right if he’s NOT sleeping next to me … and I prefer he be in my lap more than anywhere else.

Bwahaahaahaa, our humans try this “rule” thing with us but as we furry creatures know, all we have to do is act compliant and then look endearing and live able and the “rules” disappear. Your rule reminds me about our ” no cats on the counter” rule. (Heh heh)

Those silly humans and their “rules”. Reminds me of our “no cats on the counter” rule (heh, heh)

Exactly! I love the bedtime cuddles. Now if I can train Sam to not be a bed and pillow hog so I’m not hanging off the side or having all the covers stolen. Sampson is such an adorable snuggler. ๐Ÿ˜

I am glad that you and Sampson were able to get your husband to change his mind. Sharing a bed with a dog is cozy!

My dogs can’t even handle sleeping in our bed for 20 minutes. Guess it’s not their thing.
