What’s In Her Mouth?

January 5, 2016 By Jodi

It’s been a while since I’ve written about something crazy that Delilah did. Truthfully, most of the things she does that makes us laugh (or pull our hair out) isn’t typically caught on film.

Sometimes I don’t have the camera handy and sometimes I have the camera but I can’t take the photo because I have to stop her from what she’s doing.

Hubby and I have talked about setting the Go-Pro camera up, but as of right now, we haven’t done it.

One of the things I struggle with in walking the dogs, is keeping Delilah from eating anything she finds. Most of the time it’s things like crab apples, bread (from the people that don’t know that birds aren’t supposed to have bread!), all kinds of food crap that people drop in the road, or that animals pull out of the garbage and poop.

Yum, yum, what's on the menu today?

Yum, yum, what’s on the menu today?

Most times I can keep her from eating stuff by saying, “Ick” or “Leave it”, but in order to do that, I have to see it first

And she’s fast. She’ll be sniffing about and then all of a sudden she dives and boom, she comes up with a ‘treasure’.

Sometimes she’s slick about it. Which is exactly what happened on Saturday. We left the house and headed up the street. Sampson was in front of me but Delilah was lagging behind.

Something made me turn around. I’m not sure if she gave me a subtle sign, if I sensed it or I just wanted to encourage her to move along, but I turned around and she had something in her mouth.

I wished I’d had the Go-Pro on because she looked like she was smiling.

Yeah, she had a whole (nasty) banana in her mouth.

Yeah, she had a whole (nasty) banana in her mouth.

She was doing her best to munch it down, but still trying to walk at the same time.

I toyed with the idea of snapping the photo first, but I was afraid she’d scarf it down in the time I managed to pull the camera out.

I picked the banana up on the way home and tossed it out in the poop bag. Now it really tastes like shit. 😉

The banana is mild compared to some of the stuff I’ve pulled out of her mouth. What’s the craziest thing you’ve taken away from your dog?

Oh no, Delilah! Bananas are not that good. LOL!

Luckily my dogs don’t snatch things too often. We did have a problem with them eating goose poop a long time ago but we moved away from that park and there are no geese over here! Thankfully! I try really hard to not allow them to grab things off the ground. We work on that training a lot because I worry they will ingest poison.

I LOVE to eat from the ground. It’s the best buffet ever! Unfortunately, since I have a raging case of buck teeth (part of my charm) it takes me 2 or 3 shots to snag anything delicious. So besides an occasional goose poop and once a couple of raw macaroni noodles back by the dumpster – Mom ruins all my fun.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

The absolute weirdest (and grossest) thing I got was a dead rabbit head. Jimmy was rooting around under a bush a bit too long so I pulled him back. Something was sticking out of his mouth….bunnie ears. When I finally got his mouth pried open (and it wasn’t easy!) a whole head fell out! “Drop it” wasn’t working on this morsel!

And then there was this: http://cardiganshirecorgis.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-bedtime-snack.html

Katie was really bad most of her life. Nothing Mom did could stop her from eating something disgusting and it almost always ended with a poop or puke explosion a few hours later since she has a sensitive stomach. Bailie ate everything she came upon when she first arrived, but learned drop and leave it pretty well. Bailie and I both enjoy trying to quickly munch down any dead animals we come upon, but even with that, we have gotten better about dropping when asked. It is real tough to do, though. At least in the winter Mom had gloves if she has to pull something out of our mouths!

There isn’t much garbage out our way. Hailey’s favourite thing to try and eat is frozen poop.

We used to find whole loves of bread in our back yard. Now I’ve moved, doesn’t happen anymore. Now he just eats his barf when barf happens.

A mostly eaten chicken leg, wrapped in aluminum foil and thrown into the woods (instead of a garbage can!). He was so proud of his find!

The other day on the beach I turned around to look at Roxy, and she was scarfing down a long slimy looking yellow thing. She doesn’t have a good “drop it” like Torrey. I have no clue what she ate, but it didn’t make her sick at least.

Oh my goodness Cocoa Bean is like a child and puts everything in her mouth. And she knows she is not supposed to do it so she will start running like crazy around me trying to keep me from sticking my hand in her mouth to get it out!! She’s nuts!!

So you’re saying that Delilah can’t walk and chew a banana at the same time?

I’m pleased that my dogs are picky eaters.

The pictures of your dogs are so great already, but it would be nice to have a Go-Pro camera. Maybe if I had one, I could get a decent picture of Lila. Something to think about!

Most of the time, I don’t even know what Lila is putting in her mouth – she’s so quick about it. That banana looks disgusting. It’s just a gift they have – being able to find the grossest thing there is and put it in their mouths!

Luke would have been pretty psyched to find a banana, and I’m not sure he would have given it up! The worst thing I remember is when our beagle Kobi had a dead mouse. He didn’t want to give it up, and I didn’t want to reach in his mouth to pull it out. I think I had to gently pry his mouth open and get him to drop it (“leave it” was not in his vocabulary unfortunately)!

    well yuck x 1000 lol
lily is pretty good at not finding things to eat on our walk. at home she goes straight to the treat drawer when she is finished eating.

HA! I hate bananas myself, but I bet she enjoyed what she tasted!

The craziest things I’ve pulled from their mouths… With Cooper, probably when he found a $1 bill! Not crazy but certainly rare. Emmett, the worst thing EVER, was he found a used… something very, very gross… in some bushes in the park. We screamed so loudly that he backed off of it before he could put it in his mouth.

Mity used to love picking up things. He got very good at realising if he just held it in his mouth occasionally he could convince us he hadn’t managed to get the thing and so we would carry on with the walk, but then turn around 5 minutes later to see his happily chewing on God knows what!

It isn’t crazy, but I managed to pick up an ice cream without my biped seeing. I was walking touching her leg but I still got it. She didn’t know till she heard me slurp!

P.S. It was delicious and well worth the extra training I had to do about leaving stuff alone!

I always worry when the dogs eat unknown items. You never know who might have put something very bad in it (we have had some cases of that in the area). But you are right, when they see something they can be so fast to grab it!
