The Cone that Ate Sampson

March 28, 2014 By Jodi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow-Up Friday.  The post where I highlight reader’s comments, answer questions and generally wrap up my week.

You Make Me Smile – March 23, 2014

YMMS 3-23-14

Emma said, “Goodness, I’m guessing hubby is in bed too which would make four full sized bodies in a full bed over full!”

Actually, Sampson and I have been staying on the futon mattress in a spare room.  Hubby and Delilah are still sleeping in the bedroom.  Except Hubby doesn’t usually settle in as early as Delilah would like, so she comes in and snuggles with us.

Frankie and Ernie said, “They Truly do LOVE getting to cuddle up with us, don’t they?”

This Mama sure does!

Donna suggested, “Maybe you can get YOURSELF a comfy dog bed?’

There have been nights when I’ve actually thought about sleeping on one of their beds. 🙂

I Dehydrated a Pancake

Many thanks to Vlad & Barkly’s Dee for the new (to me) gluten-free website!  I’m always up for finding new sites to help me with this dietary requirement.

Jenna, Mark “HuskyCrazed Drady said, “I saw this giveaway also, and I wanted to enter, but have no idea for a recipe, or anything like that!

Don’t let that stop you!  Here’s a little tip that Jodi gave me, if you can bake it, you can dehydrate it.  Take one of your favorite dog treat recipes and then place it on a cooling rack and set that rack on a cookie sheet and bake it at the lowest setting in your oven.  The time varies depending upon the treat.  You will have to check it.

Head For the Hills

Callie, Shadow and Ducky’s Mom said, “Ducky, on the other hand, could jerk your arm right out of its socket when she pulls.”

Guess what Sue?  Sampson’s physical therapist told me about a different type of harness designed to stop the pulling.  I’m working on getting one and will keep you updated if it works.

No is When the Negotiation Begins

I'm comfy, how about you?

I’m comfy, how about you?

Molly the Wally said, “LOL D makes us chuckle as I try and do lap dog too.”

Molly, I think you are the perfect size for a lap dog. 🙂

Sue said, “In my experience, the hardest part will be towards the end of that – when he’s really feeling good and you’ll still need to keep him quiet.”

I do believe you are right.  He already tries to run (he tucks that leg up.)  Twice already Delilah’s started barking and he’s tried to run and investigate.  I’ve been off since Wednesday so I can care for him, but next week I go back 1/2 days,  which is why Hubby put the crate back up and he will have to be in the crate when one of us isn’t here.

I totally hate putting him in the crate with that giant cone on his head, but I can’t take a chance that he will run.  Have you seen that freaking cone?

I feel like a giant sunflower in this thing.

I thought I was supposed to eat cones, not the other way around.

It’s gifuckingnormous.

The physical therapist insisted he have a cone that large because he has a long nose.  Personally I feel he’s so dejected when I put it on him, that he will simply lie there.  BUT we can’t take any chances, so I have to put my baby in a cone and then in a crate.  But as the PT reminded me, it’s only for two weeks and most of that time someone will be monitoring him.  Although I do put the cone on him at night, just in case.

True story, the first night Sampson decided he wanted to snuggle with me and I got smacked in the face by the cone at 3 in the morning.

Jan K said, “There is nothing like a little silliness to help relieve stress! You and your sister sound like quite the pair.”

We like to think so Jan. 😉

Jan says, “I love what the vet office always says when you call with a problem. “Keep an eye on him.” Like, gee, who would have thought to do that?”

Right?  Like how do you think I spotted it to begin with?  It wasn’t because I was playing Candy Crush. 😉

Well that’s a wrap for me, hope you all have a great weekend!  And thank you again for all the love and support!

OMD the size of that cone. Gulp. We agree pathetic face scores sympathy which means treats and cuddles. Go for it D. Have a fabulous Friday.

Great fun. Glad you guys are doing well and that Sampson is going great after surgery. Cones really suck but are needed. We also use a bite not colar which is like a whip lash collar. Have a great weekend.

Good Morning! Geez, these last two days went by FAST, didn’t they?! And now it’s time to get my fat ass out of this chair, and take the girls out again. Then it’s off to daycare with Ducky — she’s gonna spend a half day down there so I can make up for some lost time with her sisters yesterday.

Poor Sampson! That really is the biggest cone ever. I wouldn’t want it in my bed, for sure.

And that cone is HUGE!!!!! Wow!!! Little much perhaps?!

If you set Sampson outside the house and face him in the right direction, you may be able to get satellite TV for free with a cone that size! Poor guy! I sure hope he has a big kennel so the cone will fit! Keeping him quiet when he feels better will be a project, but you will survive. The scariest part is behind you now. As for sleeping, Mom has slept on a dog bed with us when she has been sick and did not have the energy to get back upstairs. It wasn’t bad but she could have used a blanket 🙂

I know someone suggested it on FaceCrack this morning, but I saw these at Global last year and they’re way cool. You might want to call your local pet stores and see if any of them carry one. http://www.amazon.com/Comfy-Cone-E-Collar-Xlarge-Black/dp/B000XY5DSM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396018914&sr=8-1&keywords=dog+comfy+cone

Wow! That cone looks disproportionately massive! Poor guy.
Ours get cones that size too, so the sheer ridiculousness of it has us turn to old tshirts. But I guess that wouldn’t work for an ACL procedure… maybe one of the smaller soft cones from the pet store?

  14. 2 brown dawgs says

    March 28, 2014 at 12:51 pm

That cone is huge. I have always understood that they only need to be a little longer than the nose (say a couple of inches). Could you possibly cut it down? I have done that before. 🙂

  15. jan says

    March 28, 2014 at 3:04 pm

That looks like a horse cone instead of a dog cone.

  16. Jan K says

    March 28, 2014 at 3:10 pm

Poor Sampson with that huge cone, and poor you also getting smacked with it. I can certainly see how that would happen….has he wiped anything out in the house with it yet? Our house isn’t that big and I can see things getting broken if Sheba were to ever need one that size. Maybe some of the suggestions you got will work….I’ve always thought those soft ones look much better, but I’m not really sure how well they work.

    March 28, 2014 at 3:32 pm

I always feel bad putting Meadow in the crate with the cone when she’s had her surgeries…but I try to tell her – and myself – that it’s for her own good. Hang in there – both of you – two weeks will go by really fast I bet!

Don’t you find that going to work gets in the way of meeting dog needs? Except for keeping shelter and food of course. 😉

  19. Sue says

    March 28, 2014 at 5:54 pm

Though I know I recommended a soft cone on FB and still do… I fully support you making Sampson wear it. Especially when home alone. When Bennie had his amputation (a back leg) he managed to get to the would EVEN WEARING one of those humongous hard cones. There was about two weeks when he had to wear the cone PLUS a muzzle to keep him away and from pulling out his stitches (again and again and again). Total nightmare. So… sorry, Sampson!

    • Sue says

      March 28, 2014 at 5:56 pm

Well, shoot. Now that I appear totally cruel… I neglected to say that Bennie got at the incision when left alone in the cone while I was away from the house at work. He only wore the cone plus the muzzle when he was alone, too. (don’t want anyone calling the cops on me!)

Holy cow, that cone looks like a freaking satellite dish. Poor guy. When Ab had her amputation, we had a big inflatable donut sort of thing. She could actually kinda use it as a pillow when she slept. Hope the recovery goes well. Love the lap dog pics. Wish Rita would be a lap dog! She likes her space!
