I Dehydrated a Pancake

March 24, 2014 By Jodi

Why?

Why to win a dehydrator of course!

Makes no sense right?  Well let me explain.

I may have mentioned once or twice that I’m no Jodi Chick.  Don’t get me wrong, I can cook and I can bake, in fact I quite enjoy doing both of those things.  Except when I bake or cook, I tend to do those things for myself and not the dogs.

I do see the benefit of baking for my dogs, I mean I totally like knowing exactly what’s in my dog’s treats.  The issue is more along  ‘where do I find the time?”  Which is exactly why dehydrating treats is the perfect fit for me!

Except I don’t actually have a dehydrator.

When I learned that Jodi had teamed up with Silvie on 4 and they were giving away an Excaliber dehydrator, well I knew I had to come up with something pretty quick.

Friday nights are easy dinner nights in my house and when I don’t have a hair appointment, I like to make Gluten Free Pancakes.  I ran out of pancake mix and thought I might be able to make my own recipe.  (Turns out I really couldn’t.)

The first pancake was pretty bland, so I decided why not dehydrate it and make it into dog treats?

Dehydrated Blueberry Pancakes

1 1/3 cups of oat flour
2/3 cup millet flour
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup plus a tiny bit more of water
Coconut oil for the pan
Blueberries to your liking

Mix the flours and egg together.  Add the cup of water to the flours and mix well.  If need be add more water until you get a good consistency for pancakes.

Put a small amount of coconut oil in  a frying pan and add batter to the pancake size of your liking.  Drop your blueberries into the pancake.  Cook until lightly brown on one side and then flip and cook the other side until lightly brown or until the pancake is no longer wet in the center.

I put the pancakes in the refrigerator until I had some time to dehydrate them.

Since I don’t have a dehydrator, I put my oven on the lowest setting which was 170 degrees.

I set my cooling rack on a backing sheet and using my pizza cutter, cut the pancake into bite sized bits.
The pizza cutter was amazing for cutting these bad boys.

They're not uniform in size, but who cares?

I place the cookie sheet with the cooling rack on it in the oven and baked them for about 2 hours and 40 minutes.   I was planning on three hours, but when I checked them, they were dry and crisp.

I know they were dry and crisp because I bit into one.

I know they were dry and crisp because I bit into one.

I handed one to hubby to test and he ate the entire treat and said they’d be good to munch on!

But the real test was Sampson and Delilah.

Okay, you’re right.  Delilah wasn’t REALLY  a test.  She eats poop for Dog’s sake.

It cracks me up when she takes a treat, she looks like her eyes are crossed.

Sampson likes his treats lying down. He didn't get up for the testing.

BUT after I let them each have a taste, I called Delilah into the kitchen for another sample and Sampson got up and hobbled in behind her.

I’d say these dehydrated pancakes got a four paws and two thumbs up in our house.

What do you think?  Is this something you would make for your dogs?  Have you ever dehydrated anything in the oven?  Do you have any good recipes you can share with me?

For gluten-free recipes that really work, look up “Jules Gluten-Free Recipes.” They’re the best there are by far. When she calls for “all purpose flour” here’s a recipe from, I suppose, when she hadn’t branded her own products for sale. From what I’ve been able to tell, the recipe to mix your own “Jules All Purpose” flour doesn’t act any different from what she sells at her site: http://glutenfreerecipebox.com/jules-gluten-free-all-purpose-flour-blend/ I’ve gotten where I just automatically look to see if she’s got a recipe for something instead of looking through a bunch of recipes trying to decide if one will work or not. Hers always work. I actually have used her flour recipe to replace 1-to-1 in much-loved recipes that I’ve had since the beginning of time before gluten was taken away from me, and the results are great.

They must have got the real seal of approval if Sampson dragged himself in for more!

Those were a hit for sure. We don’t have much time to bake but we do love to make liver cake once in a while and it freezes nicely. Have a marvellous Monday.
    Best wishes Molly

I have to say that is the most super creative idea yet! Never would have thought of that in a million years. This recipe may just get the votes for creativity! Happy dogs, Happy Monday!

Love the idea. With the zillions of treats I buy, making Sampson & Delilah approved could be the answer. Thanks

Sounds and looks yummy. Would of never thought to do thAt, very clever. I dehydrated goose brats that a butcher made and were dry as heck so I cut them into pieces and dehydrated them in my oven and the dogs loved them. Good luck with the contest and good luck to Sampson and his surgery tomorrow.

I saw this giveaway also, and I wanted to enter, but have no idea for a recipe, or anything like that!
I have never dehydrated anything in the over or otherwise. I am not much of a cook or a baker 🙁
My hubby is chef around here, so needless to say, I did not enter! BOL

You lost us at gluten-free. BOL Ma’s sister has to be gluten-free and she is always making us taste her cardboard…ahem, I mean tasty food. 🙂 I would never have thought of dehydrating a pancake but obviously it worked. So glad the dogs liked them…now let’s hope you win that dehydrator!

What a great idea. I have never dehydrated anything in the oven or anywhere else. I would think fruits would work well.

Very creative!! And they were a hit….great job. I hope you win! I’ve only tried doing sweet potatoes in the oven, and they never get as crisp as I’d like. I would try these for sure. I also love to bake for the dogs but it’s hard to find the time.
I love how Delilah’s eyes look crossed, and Sampson stays lying down for treats sometimes….Sheba does that too.

Once you get your excalibur dehydrator (I’m rooting for you!) – beef liver sliced thin and dehydrated makes a great dog treat. I freeze it for an hour or so then slice it as thin as I can and spread it out in the dehydrator until it’s at the right consistency. Gwynn loves it, and while it smells during dehydrating, the treats themselves don’t smell enough to bother me.
