You Make Me Smile – I’ll Always Want a Lab

October 20, 2013 By Jodi

One of the big reasons I started this blog was for all the crazy, funny things my dogs do that bring a smile to my face or a laugh to my lips.

Sometimes it’s not easy to write a full blog post about it and sometimes I forget to share.

Some posts will be You Make Me Laugh and others will be You Make Me Smile, but they will all be the silly, sweet, funny things Sampson and Delilah do that help make crazy days just a little bit easier.

Feel free to share what your pet does to make you laugh/smile in the comments.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Delilah, the way your mouth is always wet in anticipation of food, you make me smile.

Yesterday when I was walking the dogs Delilah was tight against my leg wanting a treat.  When her mouth touched my pants it left a wet mark on them.

Immediately tears filled my eyes and without conscious thought I said, “I will always want to have a lab.”

She makes my life a lot of fun.

A side note: the photo was taken using an effect called “sparkle” which I found in the “magic” settings of my new camera.

Friday I’ll show you a photo of Delilah using the fun effect called “punk.”

So tell me, what do your dogs do that make you smile?  Is it a breed specific trait?

My mom says she will always want to borrow a lab. We love having my lab cousin Lena visit us but we aren’t sure that a lab is the right dog to be with us all the time. We love them, but there is a right breed for everyone and we get our lab fix when Lena is here and by reading your blog 🙂

Mom loves those wet marks, too…especially when the spit drips out of my mouth and burns the wax off the floor. I love treats!!

    Love and licks and drips,

Love the sparkle. And it’s great they make you smile. That’s why we love dogs, isn’t it.

Oh cool effect. My camera has been away all weekend so no time to play for me. 🙂

Yes drool is our constant companion.

Our golden Sheba loves to swat me with her paw when she wants my attention (gently). She kept doing it when we were hiking yesterday, and I ended up with a lot of wet, muddy spots on me, but that’s OK!
    I like that sparkle effect!

Love the sparkle effect — it’s really cool!!

You will always want a Lab; I will always want a Golden. I love the way Callie and Shadow both lean into me when they’re sitting or standing next to me, as if to gently say “I love you, Mama”. And the list of things they do that make me smile and/or laugh is endless. And I’ll always want a Cardigan Corgi, too, cuz Ducky keeps us laughing all the time.

    Love the sparkle effect! 🙂
I love all of my dogs equally, but eachgh for different reasons, so it looks like I’m always going to have to share my home with Labs, Vizslas, and shepherd mixes…or mixes of all three. LOL!

I have always loved Labs but never had one; now that we are retired and hubby is home more, he drew the line about no dog hair in the house-so we have a Bichon. Our pup makes me smile when he snuggles with me in the morning and often rests his face against mine. Thanks for sharing.

Delilah is one dog I would love to meet in person! Can you bring her to Vegas for me? 😛

Greyhounds have this habit of rubbing their paws over their ears when you quit petting them to let you know that they haven’t had enough that just melts me!

Shadow our new boy ‘chatters’ his teeth when I’m fixing his meal–And Todd, stretches and makes this sweet little noise in the morning that sounds like he’s saying ‘hhiiiiggghh’ when I let him out of his crate in the morning–That and so many things the dogs do make me smile every day….

Cute photo! Labs are definitely smile-inducers. Rita makes me smile all the time, but one of my faves is when she rolls on her back and kicks her feet in the air and wiggles around. Such a funny girl.

I love the sparkle in her eyes. 🙂 My Lab does the same drool. I make Maya & Pierson sit and wait while I fill their bowls and Maya always ends up with a few drops of slobber on the floor in front of her.

Silas does not drool. Ever. I really, really love that about him. 🙂

Um…drool doesn’t make me smile. It makes me gag a little. Nose prints on my clothes though – or nose juice running down my neck in the morning from B’s head being under my chin – that makes me smile every time. The first time it happened I thought I was sweating and then realized, ‘Nope, that’s from her nose!’.

I think I will always want a dog with a tail and floppy ears. And short fur. I thought I wanted a lab until I fostered one…but they are much stronger than I am. 🙂

Well, you know I have a soft spot for the Labs too…so I’ll have to agree on that score. My guys do so many thing that make me smile. Every morning, as soon as I move in the bed Jack is up and by my side waiting for a scratch. He may have already eaten, but he’s really just waiting for mom to get up. And if I don’t get right up, he just lies down right there squeezed into the small space between the bed & the wall rather then in his nice big dog bed 5 feet away.

When I decided I wanted to adopt a puppy who would grow up to be a good foster brother or sister, I tried to decide between a lab and a golden. I kept asking myself what the difference was.

They’re both medium to large, athletic, social to people and dogs. The breed descriptions are very similar for both.

Eventually I decided on a golden because I got the sense they were a little “softer” in personality than labs.

Now I’ve had a lab foster for over 2 months and I see for myself the personality differences. Mr. Handsome is loving, sociable, and smart, just like Honey. But he has a goofy side she doesn’t. And his enjoyment of food makes me think more of Delilah than Honey.

I’m so happy with my little golden and feel we make a great team. But when my borrowed lab goes home with his family, I’m going to miss having him pull the covers off me with his teeth and him “snow plowing” his sister out of the way so he can get more attention.

And I’m very thankful that having my own temporary lab makes your Sampson and Deliah stories come to life in a whole new way. 🙂
