You Make Me Laugh – September 1, 2013

September 1, 2013 By Jodi

One of the big reasons I started this blog was for all the crazy, funny things my dogs do that bring a smile to my face or a laugh to my lips.

Sometimes it’s not easy to write a full blog post about it and sometimes I forget to share.

Some posts will be You Make Me Laugh and others will be You Make Me Smile, but they will all be the silly, sweet, funny things Sampson and Delilah do that help make crazy days just a little bit easier.

Feel free to share what your pet does to make you laugh/smile in the comments.

Delilah, when you lift your leg

Lift

To pee on a tree

Pee

You make me laugh.

Oh yes, she really lifts her leg and pees on trees.  At least once per walk. And I’ve been trying like crazy to catch it on camera and finally, finally I caught it.

Have you ever heard/seen a female dog lift their leg to pee?  Do you have a gender barrier breaker in your house?

Sound off in the comments.

I break the gender barrier! I am a female leg lifter. And sometimes I hump my bed. Mom says I am naughty. Of course I am!! It’s fun!

that is funny – you know both of boys have never lifted their leg to pee!

My sister and Mom’s last dog, both bigger dogs, always were leg lifters. Well, Mom says it took Katie until she was almost a year old to do it. I try, but being short legged, it is a bit more difficult. When I do, I usually have to brace the lifted foot on the object being peed upon. We keep hearing it is not ladylike, but if you want to get things aimed at the correct spot, you need to lift a leg sometimes. Maybe you humans should give it a shot? PS Did Delilah pee on her leash or the tree 🙂

Oh yes … seen this lots with female dogs in our family and friends dogs. So funny too!! Good job capturing it on camera … was something I wanted to do as well and never could get the timing!! Hilarious.

WOW… You did a super job of Aiming and Firing your Pee Shooter!! VERY impressive!!!

Confession TIME… sometimes WE … SQUAT.

You just go ahead and pee however you want to!!! BOL!!!

I have all girls but they at some time or another have done very “male” things like humping the bed, humping each other, leg lifts while peeing but I just recently got a boy foster whom I’ve seen lifting his leg and now he only squats! I guess there is just too much estrogen here with five girls versus two boys including my husband and I!

Oh, Delilah! Such a funny girl.

Does she use the tree for balance? In that second photo, it almost looks like she is just balancing on one leg instead!

Lol, our Georgia (10 yo female black lab) does this. It’s ridiculous!

    September 1, 2013 at 10:16 am

Too funny! Before Ducky, Callie and Shadow humped each other A LOT. I used to think it was just their way of telling each other who was “boss”. But then, I read recently — and for the life of me I can’t remember where I saw it — that humping is sometimes an act of playful instigation. And after much reflection, I have to say that I agree. Especially when I watch my girls play. There’s always a little bit of dominance mixed in, I guess, especially when Callie and Shadow are playing with Ducky but there’s no evidence of aggression at all…they just want to play.

Ha! We have the opposite situation… Cooper squats to pee like a girl. He’s never lifted his leg!

Mo squats like a girl! How do you train a boy dog to lift his leg? LOL!

Haha, yes I’ve heard of female dogs lifting their legs. Females still want to mark their territory, but most don’t lift. She looks so silly doing it, though, so I’d be really happy to have that to look forward to on walks! My parents’ male Beagle, Copper John, has NEVER lifted his leg in his life. He girly-squats and it is sooooo funny! We think he was neutered too young…whoops!

  14. Jackie Bouchard says

    September 1, 2013 at 10:58 am

Yes, our beagle Bailey was a serious leg lifter. She would mark like crazy on walks and lift her leg several times per walk. (She also liked to hump the hubs when he would do push-ups.) She was definitely a tomboy!

My daughter’s dainty little Maltese always lifted her leg to pee. We wondered if she had gender confusion because we had never seen it before. But yes, the boys who squat definitely need lessons in marking their territory. You can’t mark much with a squat.

LittleBear always lifted his leg, traditional boy-dog style.
Li’l Girl does the combo. She girl-squats, but also lifts a leg during the squat – since she’s so low, it sort of sticks off to the side. But she has never peed ON anything like Delilah. That’s so funny that she does that! Especially on trees! Not an easy feat for a girl!
Austin often squats like a girl, but not very low… he just squats down a little. He occasional lifts a leg, but when he does, he just barely lifts one… like he’s just doing it because he knows he’s supposed to lift a leg, but doesn’t really understand the purpose of why.

This made me laugh, too. : )

My little boy, Faolan, backs his butt up to the couch, and sits down that way, with his front legs on the floor.

  18. Donna says

Jodi, I kid you not. Leah AND Meadow do this. And Toby squats.
Do you think we have some gender confusion over here or what?

    Hi Y’all,

My Human says both of the females she’s had hiked a leg…’course they were spayed…might make a difference.

Oh, I am laughing because Blueberry used to do that, too! It cracked me up! Sometimes, she’d back up to try to pee higher up on the tree.

CarrieAnne does that same thing, and I kinda laugh when she does it, because she’s such a little lady!

  22. Dee says

    September 1, 2013 at 11:24 pm

Our neighbor’s black lab does that. You will see her run over here every time I’ve had the boys out–she’ll run around finding every tree/bush they’ve peed on and hike her leg up to try to cover their scent.

  23. Slimdoggy says

    September 2, 2013 at 5:35 am

Never had a female do that, but our Tino used to literally back up into a bush to poop. Jack is starting to do the same!

This really did make me laugh. Rudy, at age 3, finally two weeks ago figured out to raise his leg to pee on things. Took him long enough! Now I’m wondering if, having been raised with two boys, Rosie might try to raise a leg? lol

HAHA, she is trying to prove her dominance. My one female used to do that too. Not many do but when they do I giggle. Great pictures, glad you finally caught it maybe your luck is changing and you will get the fox next.

Hailey does the same thing, but not so high. She only started doing it when we got a male dog . . . guess she doesn’t want to be left out!

Delilah, you are a trip. Even Storm doesn’t do THAT! lol Delilah must be very flexible. 🙂

    Excellent job getting the pictures!

Ha ha, I love it! Yes, our little Beagle does that! She does it mostly in the yard, when she has to pee exactly where her sister did right before her. It’s so funny though, because her back leg comes up and kind of forward too, just like Delilah’s. It’s really quite a production.

  29. Dawn says

    September 3, 2013 at 3:23 pm

LOL! I’ve never known a female dog to do that. 🙂 My Sheltie Cassie from when I was a girl would walk and pee at the same time. My mom had a number of dogs at that time so if Cassie peed in the house, we always knew it was hers and not one of the other dogs.
