Tuesday Just Got Tasty at Our House

August 27, 2013 By Jodi

Delilah here, taking control of the blog to share some exciting news.

Are you ready?

The Mama actually baked for us.  I know, shocking right?

Don’t get me wrong, the Mama takes very good care of us.  She feeds us great food, takes us for walks, monitors our physical condition, and loves us beyond reason.  But there’s one thing she doesn’t do and that is make treats for us.  At least not like some moms do and you know who you are and who I’m talking about and let me just say, there are some lucky dogs out there.

Not that I’m complaining about the Mama because the treats she does feed us are good quality, they’re just not homemade.

But that all changed on Sunday.  The Mama actually turned on the oven.  Go figure, I was just as surprised as the next dog.  Granted, it wasn’t her recipe and she didn’t do any fancy mixing or kneading but it sure was tasty.

The Mama made a beef heart!  I know, you could have knocked me over with a tail wag!

Word of caution, these photos aren’t for the faint of heart.  Get it?  I made a funny!!

Here’s what she did.

First she set the oven to 350 degrees and added the defrosted beef heart to the baking dish, sprinkling it well with garlic powder.

Beef Heart

I swear I’d eat it just like this, but the Mama said, “NO Delilah!”

She covered it with foil and put it in the oven for about an hour and a half.  The smell of beef cooking filled the house, so when Daddy came home he said, “Something smells good.”

The Mama offered him a piece but he said “No.”  (I think she should have just stuck it on his plate, he’d have never known the difference.)

The cooked beef heart.

The cooked beef heart.

Sampson and I waited patiently in the kitchen while she sliced it up.

Sampson and I waited patiently in the kitchen while she sliced it up.

After she sliced it up, she put it a bowl so she could take a picture. What the woof?

After she sliced it up, she put it a bowl so she could take a picture.

What the woof Mama, we’re waiting patiently right here!!

Finally it was our turn to get some noms.

Delilah Nom

Why thank you, I don’t mind if I do!

Sampson Nom

Thank you Mama, may I have another?

Once the Mama had finished cutting it up, taken some photos and given us each a few bites, she emptied the bowl into a freezer bag and stuck it in the freezer.  Naturally she labled it with our names on it, just so Daddy doesn’t go in there and accidentally grub down on our noms.

The Mama said if all treats were that easy to make, she’d make them all the time.  She also said something else like, if you don’t like what I feed you for treats go live with Koly’s mom.

I’m pretty sure she was just joking about that, but I’ll have to go love on her for a few minutes just to make sure.

Yes it’s true folks, Tuesday just got tastier in our house!

Many thanks to our awesome hosts Kol’s Notes and Sugar the Golden Retriever for this Tasty Blog Hop.

Way to go, Delilah! Great post this morning, Sweetie!! Make sure you give your Mama LOTS of doggie kisses when she gets home from work today! Your mama gave me a great idea! I’ll have to go get a beef heart for my own girls. They’ll LOVE that!

    That looks good.
I wonder how was the smell in the kitchen. For dogs great I imagine, but for humans?
I have yet to cook for Doggy, I feed him raw meat, he loves chicken hearts and liver.

Oh dear…I do not think my Ma could handle cooking a heart even if she knew I would love it. Your mom was very brave and you should definitely love all over her for cooking you something delicious!

YUM! If you didn’t tell me what it was, I wouldn’t have noticed the difference either. Of course, Maya & Pierson will eat anything.

That’s awesome Delilah. How nice of her to cook for you. You SHOULD be nicer to her. A lot of other dogs only get gross over-cooked bones made of cardboard (or some other inedible ingredients)

OM NOM NOM. Where on earth do you find beef heart? I know that Jones sells pumpers, but I wouldn’t know where to look for raw beef heart.

Delilah you are one eloquent pup! I loved your post, you definitely made me smile!

Please tell your mom that my daughter is doing better. She is in a lot of pain, because the punctures went down so deep, into the muscle. But she went to the doctors today, and they said the wounds look better than yesterday. She has a great attitude, and does not blame the dog. She knows it was misdirected aggression, and is not letting this change her opinion of dogs.

That looks amazing. Mom thinks she would’ve eaten it herself!

Koly himself wouldn’t turn his nose up at baked beef heart. In fact, he’d be thrilled as woof to get these.

Delilah! You and Sampson are LUCKY! My dogs are spoiled in many ways, but no, I don’t make treats for them either. I’m just not that handy or creative in the kitchen, lol.
But your mom went and did something wonderful here. Something amazing. Put some in the freezer? What? You didn’t demand it all right then?
I wonder if I could bear to handle and cook it a beef heart… the wieners would go wild!

  27. Jessica says

    August 28, 2013 at 4:16 pm

Turning on the oven in August is Serious Business. If I didn’t have the dehydrator, Silas would go all summer on store bought treats.

  28. Elyse and Riley says

    August 28, 2013 at 8:18 pm

Haha, I love that last little remark your Mama made, Delilah…about going to live with Koly’s mom! 🙂

I’m pretty sure that Riley would think I’d lost my marbles if I actually cooked her something (or even got remotely close to the oven)! I think I’ve made her homemade Frosty Paws once or twice, and I can’t remember a single time I’ve ever baked her anything.

Mmmm, that sounds good (for you)! And, you’ll be eating those treats for a long time (it looks like a big heart!). I’m like your mom about treats – so how do you turn on the oven? 🙂

  34. Jan K says

    August 29, 2013 at 2:36 pm

Delilah, that is just awesome. Suddenly my dogs think the frozen yogurt treats I make them are lacking something (such as beef)! I do think that’s even easier for us Moms though, now I just need to figure out where to get one!

  35. Kirby the Dorkie says

    August 30, 2013 at 10:47 am

I’m so glad your mama cooked and I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it! Will have to look into some beef heart!
