Our Appointment with the Holistic Vet

April 16, 2013 By Jodi

Ever since Sampson injured his paw last fall, he’s been on and off with the licking.  About six weeks ago I noticed he had licked so much it was almost bleeding.

I cleaned it, and put some Vetericyn on it and wrapped it with vet tape.  It kept him from making it bleed.

Whoo Hoo, we can stop him from licking it, but I still wanted to know why he was licking, so we scheduled an appointment with the holistic vet.

The holistic vet we use is based out of Massachusetts, about an hour away but he makes house calls.  Our friend has him see her dogs every three months, so Friday he came to our house.

I put the dogs on the porch so we could chat first. Once he had a clear idea of what was going on, I let them in.  He was thrilled to see Delilah and was ecstatic at the weight that both dogs had lost.

IMG_4656 Then he got down to the business of examining Sampson.

IMG_4660 The treatment performed on Friday, acupuncture.  One in the head.

Paw One in the paw and one in the chest (no picture.)

IMG_4657 The big cheese ball ate it up.

Since Dr..Landau does not carry a full supply of herbs, he’ll be sending the recommended supplements in the mail.  The official diagnosis is a toxin build up in the liver and some seasonal allergies.  If memory serves me right, the liver is not helping with the seasonal allergies.  The supplements should help the liver detox and help Sampson’s system deal with the allergies so his skin doesn’t get as irritated.

Dr. Landau will be back in the area in July and I may schedule a follow-up, just to be certain Sampson is healing the way he is supposed to.

Dr. Landau also does phone consults and can manage your pets health by mailing herbs and supplements so if you’re interested in giving holistic a try, why not check out his website?  All the information you need is right there, and if you start ready testimonies, you’ll see my friend’s dog, Lily right on the front page.

What do you think? Would you consider a holistic vet for your pet’s health needs or do you go with traditional medicine? Do you like the idea of your pet being treated in your own home?

Very interesting. I have heard very good things about acupuncture for dogs. I hope it helps him along with the herbs.

I think I would go with a mix of traditional and holistic as needed. For example, on the traditional front, one of the reasons I wanted to get Thunder’s teeth cleaned and checked now that he is 7 is because problems like chipped or cracked teeth or tartar can lead to various health issues. Thunder’s teeth are in excellent shape so if issues crop up, I have ruled that out.

We hope it works. We say each to their own. Anyway let’s hope the licking has stopped. Have a terrific Tuesday.
    Best wishes Molly

You will not be surprised that I definitely in holistic treatment and have used it (human, canine, equine). Very interested in Sampson’s progress.

That is so cool!! I would love house visits for my dogs, who wouldn’t. I’m thinking it might be a little pricey though.

I took Maggie to her first visit with a holistic vet – we are lucky to have many holistic options here in Portland – and I’ve never been more impressed with a vet visit. I actually felt the vet knew more than me about nutrition, which is something I’ve not been able to say for years. She got us on the right track with the types of proteins to help Maggie deal with her allergies and gave us some Chinese herbs to help her system repair. Now Maggie is healthier and happier than I’ve seen in a long time. I’m now of the opinion that holistic care is not an luxury but a necessity for dogs with chronic issues like allergies. They are the only ones addressing causes and not just symptoms.

Hope it works out and the licking stops! We are more traditional but mom does like to try her own home remedies on issues like licking.

Our veterinary clinic recently added a holistic veterinarian. I look forward to talking to her.

I would love a holistic vet or even a traditional vet that makes house calls. House calls are great! Does he do massage therapy? Some time this year, the therapy pet organization where Cupcake and I volunteer is having a demonstration of doggie massage. I am interested in that.

nail in the head? Hmmm…I don’t know. I love the idea of my pets being seen at home but I am not completely “sold” on holistic medicine

I’ve thought a lot about finding a holistic vet for Silas, but there aren’t many around here. (We live in whatever the opposite of crunchy-granola is).

    Good luck to Sampson!

I would love to have access to a holistic vet, having read lots about them. I have been successfully treated with acupuncture myself, and wouldn’t hesitate to use it on my animals if needed.

    I don’t know about those needles…

I think I would consider a holistic vet (there is actually one that works in the vet office I normally go to anyway) if I didn’t like the traditional treatment offered. I don’t have a problem with most meds – Blueberry takes Rimadyl as needed (mostly in the winter) and is on a supplement for her hips.

Also, I don’t mind driving to the vet and neither does Blueberry – but if she were really sick – I think house calls would be excellent!!

I totally love the idea of the vet coming to my house. I wish I could find a good holistic vet in town that makes house calls! I was just telling my hubby that I’m definitely going to find a vet that comes to our house – it’s so stressful to take the cats to the vet and Cali would love it if the vet came to her! I hope Sampson is feeling better!

I think, for Rita, she’d actually be worse if the vet came to our house. She’s very protective of our home! For her, it’s probably best to go to the office.

We treated our last dog’s cancer w/ a mix of traditional and holistic (“halflistic” I called it, since it wasn’t wholly holistic). We haven’t really had to make that decision yet with Rita since she’s been healthy – knock on wood!

    Hi Jodi,
It’s too bad I don’t live in the States.
I’ve never heard of a vet making house calls, other than for animals on a farm (horses, etc.)
Sampson looked so comfortable with the vet. I can’t believe he allowed the doc to insert needles without pulling at them.
    Very cool.
It’s great to know what the cause was.
    Have a terrific week,
    Tracy

I’m with you on the holistic approach. For me, it is along the same lines as eating healthier and more naturally. As for the home vet visits, I don’t think so. For the pack, most of them are thrilled with the social outing aspect of going to the vet (they LOVE it!) and Forest would be even more stressed with someone coming into his house and wanting to touch him, etc.

As much as I try to avoid chemicals, I am also not a “holistic” person. In my opinion, a lot of the herbs and what not are still drugs, and untested ones at that, and most are not proven to do anything helpful. But lots of people disagree with me on that, so I say, if you believe it works, than go for it.

A lot of conventional medicine doesn’t work either. Personally, I think the key is prevention through diet and exercise anyway, rather than trying to find cures after the fact.

I’m glad you’re having a positive experience…I tried a holistic vet for my Bruno’s skin issues but the results were not good…After 4 months of treatment with prescribed herbal remedies there was no improvement and I went back to traditional medications…I am fascinated by the acupuncture…Sampson doesn’t seem to mind it at all..

I am so jealous that your holistic vet makes house calls!

As you already know, I am a new fan of the holistic vet, but work at a traditional vet clinic.I think a combination of both is great and is working very well for us and the holistic approach has opened a lot of doors for me so far!

Looks like a very nice visit, nice that he comes to the house, not many mobile vets out there, I like how he took his shoes off and got on the floor with him. The pictures were great! I hope it helps.

We do a liver detox a couple times a year to help keep Felix’s allergies (and my own) in check. It really can make a difference. I hope Sampson is feeling much better soon!
