Counter Surfing 101

March 18, 2013 By Jodi

Saint Patrick’s day is over, the corned beef was delicious and now we look forward to next Sunday’s breakfast, which is corned beef hash and eggs.

Sometimes I’m not sure which we like more, the corned beef or the corned beef hash.Β  Hubby makes a killer corned beef hash.

The year was 2008, it was a couple of days after Saint Patrick’s day and Hubby was preparing our corned beef hash for dinner.

He had come home and taken the left over corned beef and put it through my grandmother’s meat grinder and it was all set, sitting on the counter until I came home and he could start dinner.

I had picked the dogs up from daycare and they rushed in all happy to see Daddy after a long day of being apart.Β  Hubby met me in the dining room with something he wanted to show me.

I can’t for the life of me remember what we were talking about, but it took a few seconds for the sound of slurping to register.

“What the hell is that noise?” I asked.

“I don’t know” he said, “but it’s coming from the kitchen.

DELILAH! We both shouted.

Counter Surfing 101 She’s bold that one.

She had managed to eat the entire plate of corned beef!

I’ll handle it, I said and promptly locked her in her crate for her own safety.

She’s damn lucky you were here, he said to me later and I’m glad I was.

She’s a counter surfer that one. (No, that is not the original picture, I was too busy saving the dog’s life to snap a photo.)

And this is the Monday Mischief blog hop hosted by Alfie’s Blog, Snoopy’s Dog Blog and My Brown Newfies.

Delilah can get way back there can’t she? The only counter surfer I had was Thunder. He could get way back there too. Luckily he gave that behavior up at 18 months!

I think she is part CAT! We have a “counter surfer” in our family and that is CODY our Cat! Love that photo!

LOL Delilah is a one. We can’t quite reach our counter but we probably would not steal anyway, more a begging and drooling type are we. Have a marvelous Monday.
    Best wishes Molly

Delilah! You naughty (lucky) girl! I would LOVE to be big enough to reach the counter. There’s all sorts of great stuff up there….. Mmmmm.

    Love and licks,

Excellent work Delilah! I have gotten in some tight situations myself with my counter surfing, sometimes aided by my cat bro Bert but the crime has always been well worth the time!

If I was that tall, I may think about doing the same thing. I know there’s yummy stuff up there.

    Naughty, naughty!

Silas is too short to counter surf unless something is right on the front edge, and I’m pretty obsessive about keeping the food off the counters just in case. I wish he would generalize that behavior to the rest of the house, though. He’s a terrible “surfer” of the dining room table, which is that place in our house where we put all that stuff “temporarily.”

Hahahaha! Nice one, Delilah! There is nothing wrong with her nose, eh? I hope she wasn’t sick from it and didn’t have to pay for her shenanigans.

I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help laughing at Delilah. Callie has done her own share of counter surfing in her (almost) nine years, and gotten herself in trouble. (Thankfully, no broken plates to cut paw pads on though!) I’ve learned over the years to move stuff back to the rear of the countertops, the stove, or on top of the toaster oven, where she can’t reach. And when I have to thaw stuff out the quick way, it goes in a bowl on top of the refrigerator where she definitely cannot reach.

Of course, now Ducky is trying to learn to counter surf but she’s not tall enough. Doesn’t matter, when Daddy’s home, he sneaks her stuff when he thinks I’m not looking — which REALLY ticks me off at times. So much for consistency in training her!! πŸ™

By the way, can I have hubby’s recipe for the corned beef hash? I made my first corned beef & cabbage dinner ever yesterday (in the crockpot) and it turned out really good, but there’s way too much left.

YOUR hubby’s recipe, that is … my own has never even had corned beef hash before. πŸ™‚

Oh, if only I was tall enough to counter surf….there would never be any food left for Ma and Daddy-dog. πŸ™‚

We had a counter surfer. She was my shep/lab mix, Mojo. I adopted her from a shelter as a puppy. She was the smartest dog I have ever known. We learned to store the bread in the microwave…until Mojo figured out which button to push to open the microwave. Then she figured out how to open the fridge, and would make midnight raids…until we barricaded the fridge at night and when we left the house during the day! πŸ™‚

Reason #458 why I have little guys. I just have to remember to keep chairs pushed into tables and away from the counter or I will lose food. I’m hoping they never learn to boost each other up. I’m sure if I were a dog, I would grab human food whenever I can.

What a talented counter surfer. I hope the hash was good.

Man, she’s got some *reach*! Rita will occasionally stand up and take a peek at what’s on the counter, but luckily she is too short to reach anything (as long as it’s not right on the edge!). Good thing you were there to “save” her! πŸ™‚

I can only imagine the intestinal distress that resulted from eating all that hash! Was it bad?

    Hi Y’all!

Golly gee! I just sniff toward the edge of the counter and you’d think I’d committed a capital offense! Delilah, you were lucky…now I see why my Human is so mean about sniffin’…she thinks it could lead to…dreams of yummy stuff dance through my head!

    Y’all come by now,

Delilah is obviously a habitual counter surfer, considering this was not the original offense. Clearly corned beef really is good – like by humans and dogs alike. Glad you saved her life πŸ™‚

Great mischief Delilah!! I bet it was yummy!! πŸ™‚

I like to counter surf but usually only when I’m out and about, there’s often people on the other side of counters in the vets etc with treats for me, but at home I’m a good boy, at least I make sure I don’t get caught!! Tee Hee

Did you get any this year? πŸ™‚

    Hope you’re having a fun day πŸ™‚

    Toby’s a counter surfer too. πŸ™
