Has The World Gone Crazy?

February 2, 2012 By Jodi

I JUST FOUND OUT THAT WHAT IS PRESENTED HERE IS NOT THE TOTAL FACTS.  I WILL BE UPDATING THIS POST TONIGHT SO PLEASE WAIT BEFORE YOU TAKE ANY ACTION.

I know the Aztec calendar stops in 2012 and Doomsday predictors say the world will end, but did any of them mention the world would go crazy in the meantime?

Last week I wrote about Justice For Putz, you may remember Putz, he was the pitbull that was euthanized in Michigan for biting a man who was going to harm his mistress.  Rather than choose a number of other options, the town decided to go with their original plan and euthanized poor Putz.

As I posted about Putz, 2 Brown Dawgs left me a comment making me aware of another pitbull euthanized in Michigan.  Ace was picked up in an Ace Hardware store, and due to liability issues, the City of Detroit will not release pitbulls to anyone but their owner.   While several people came forwarding claiming ownership of Ace, none could provide proof.  Rescue groups rallied and petitioned for Ace, but in the end the city of Detroit euthanized the dog.

Hot on the paws of Ace’s death, comes the tragedy of Heidi.  I found this information courtesy of The Elka Almanac’s post on facebook, I then went to her page and read the story.

Heidi is a Doberman Pinscher in (dut dut duh) Michigan who has been ordered put to death.  Heidi and her owner were out walking when a stranger approached and asked if he could pet Heidi, as he bent to pet her apparently Heidi jumped up.  The man claims that Heidi broke his nose and reported the incident to the police.  The police in the City of Royal Oaks is prosecuting this as a dog bite/attack and will only drop the charges if Heidi is destroyed or removed from her family of four years.

Her family has started a petition requesting the city allow them to keep Heidi  restricted to her family’s private yard.  Would you take a minute and sign the petition?  If you tweet or blog, could you include a link?

I’d like to think if it was one of us, that people would help.  We couldn’t save Putz or Ace, but maybe if we all work together we can save Heidi.

Book update:  Still the same. 🙁

It appears there is more to this story. The owner seems to want to minimize this. Why? It was a bite that required medical treatment and at least one, maybe two surgeries. Why make it sound like there was no bite? (Apparently they have pictures.) I think owner’s must take responsibility for their dogs. This dog was unlicensed too. Maybe this owner was not responsible?

This is local to me and I would be shocked if Royal Oak was absolutely set on destroying this dog. (It doesn’t sound like something that city would do.) The city must protect residents and visitors. Sadly, in Michigan we have had cases where vicious dog attacks have resulted in deaths. Too many. The City claims that they are looking for the owner to take steps so that this will not happen again, offering the option of retraining and muzzling the dog while in public and are not seeking to have the dog be pts.

    An article:

    http://dailytribune.com/articles/2012/02/02/news/doc4f2ad6d33c8f6109674853.txt

Here is the City’s position and police report:

    http://www.ci.royal-oak.mi.us/portal/content/people-vs-spalding

My opinion, these cases will continue to happen until dog owners accept responsibility for their own actions and their dog’s actions and stop trying to minimize them. Responsible dog ownership means not putting your dog in a position where this can happen and allowing the girlfriend of your son to take your dogs out to a public place is simply irresponsible. This was a public place with a lot of car and foot traffic where dogs don’t really belong. As much as I trust Thunder and Storm, I would never take them to this area. It is just not appropriate for dogs.

So who pays for this irresponsibility? The dog. What would be the outcry if the next time it was a child who was injured requiring surgery? Or someone’s dog while out walking?

Now this just pisses me off. Here this woman is manipulating the public and not taking responsibility for her dog, had I known the whole story I certainly wouldn’t have written the post I did.

Thank you for investigating the situation further and providing me the additional information. This is MY BAD for not digging a little deeper to see if there was more information about it. I have learned a valuable lesson in fact checking and will try my best to do better in the future.

I agree with you that owners need to be responsible for their dogs and you are right, she shouldn’t allow someone else to control her dogs, I wouldn’t put either of my dogs in a position like that either.

I will clear this up in my FUF post tonight. Thanks again Brown Dawgs, I appreciate it!

so, wait, it’s a case of ‘when Dogs Head-butt’? Doesn’t have quite the same ring to it as ‘when sharks attack’. At this rate, a dog is going to get put down if its claws catch on your sweater and cause a run. I hate to say it, but I’d be tempted to give the dog up, for the sole reason that, unless their ‘fenced back yard’ is a few acres of land, what kind of life is that for the poor dog? I’d rather find her a good home, if that’s the only alternative. What I don’t understand is why ‘required muzzling in public’ isn’t an option here? I realise it won’t keep innocent bystanders from being headbutted, but, really?! REALLY?!

jeez I signed the petition as was about to ‘share’ on my facebook urging my friends/fam to also sign and at the last second I hesitated, Thank Gosh! Came here to comment & had the time to read the other comments [which I don’t always have time to do] and a good thing I read 2browndawgs comment! Anyway, no harm done as I was able to cancel my post before it was published! Thanks for edga-ma-cating me in time 2browndawgs!

I want to stand up for dogs, but they can only be as responsible as their owner. I’m glad 2browndawgs shed some more light on this story.
