A Year At The Park

January 16, 2012 By Jodi

The  company I work for gives me Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday off.  While I love having a paid day off and have nothing against Dr. MLK, it irritates me that we don’t get President’s Day or Veteran’s Day off.   IMO our Veterans have done just as much (if not more) for this country as Dr. King.  But that’s not what this post is about.

I had today off.  It was a nice day off and started with breakfast with my nephew (the Veteran,) my mom, my sisters, my niece, one of my daughters and my son-in-law.

After breakfast and a quick stop at Ocean State Job Lots for some gluten-free goodies, it was time to walk the dogs.  I figured if I walked them early, I could spend the afternoon resting on the couch because I didn’t sleep so great last night.

As we walked up into the park, it suddenly occurred to me, that it was exactly on Dr. MLK day last year that I first began taking the dogs up to the park on a regular basis.  I started thinking of all the things I had learned while walking the dogs this past year and I thought it would be fun to highlight some of them.

Walking the dogs and letting them run for at least a half hour a day 3 to 4 times per week will result in weight loss.  For the dogs.  I still haven’t lost any weight. 🙁

Some dogs need to be on a leash, because they just cannot be trusted to return when called.

A dog on a 30 foot leash, even one who has lost a lot of weight, can cause a severe fall when she takes off across a wet field.

A piece of deer leg will not be given up easily, AND if you carry that piece of leg, your dog WILL be perfectly heeled at your side.

Even in woods close by your house, you can still get scared.  Especially if you have an active imagination. 🙂

Beauty is where you find it.

I’m sure there’s probably more and if I think of them I will recap them in my Follow-Up Friday post.

How was your day?  Did you have it off, or did you have to work?

What a wonderful way to measure a year! i always learn so much during our long walks! It’s fun to go back and check out some posted I might have missed. I don’t know WHAT I would have don of Koly found a deer leg!

I love our walks. Besides the exercise it gives me so much time to think without distractions. Besides, I’m learning things!

Nice picture! I am glad that you got the day off – I didn’t. It seems like everyone had the day off. The roads were so quiet going to and from work. Downtown seemed like a ghost town. It was nice. I didn’t have to wait in line to get coffee!

I do admit I love when the roads are quiet. I enjoyed the day off too and just wish there were more of them! I wish you had the day off though.

We don’t get Martin Luther King’s birthday off in Canada. The only person’s birthday we celebrate is Queen Victoria. 🙂

Keep enjoying the walks, and keep enjoying the park. It’s those little pleasures that make life so great,

So when is Queen Victoria’s Birthday? What other holidays do you get off?

I do enjoy the park, and try to frequent it as much as possible.

Had to work and had to deal with the new puppy. 🙂

Your list is great and it seems that you have discovered the key to teaching a solid heel…a deer leg. Who knew? lol

    Love that picture!

Oh but the new puppy must be fun! Are you close by so you can get home at lunch to let him out?

Yes who knew a deer leg would perfect the heel. 🙂

i wish i’d had the day off, but unfortunately, nope.
sounds like a lovely day of park time, though, and hopefully you got a chance to go home and rest and recuperate for a bit without the dogs harassing you for entertainment 🙂

Thanks Lexy, yes I can home and slept most of the afternoon. 🙂

Don’t worry about losing weight. Walking dogs builds muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat.

I like that attitude Jan! I must have a lot of muscle. 🙁

We had the day off and went for a long hike in a new spot! It was wonderful.

You should get Mem. Day and Veterans Day off–and a whole lot of other days off besides. American business has a lot to learn from the European model on that one.

That park sounds wonderful–way to take advantage of what few days off we do have 🙂

Your hiking posts are awesome! I’ve been wanting to find out how you get your dogs to return to you. It looks like they are all off leash and you are having fun!

I love the park at the top of the street, I don’t know what we would have done without it.

No veterans day, it ticks me off that we don’t get it off!

I had the day off and spent it playing fetch with Sophie and Lola. It was a nice way to pass the day. I would love every wknd to be a 3 day weekend 🙂

I’m with you on that one Patty, I would work 10 hour days to have a three day weekend every week!

Glad you had a good day and I’m sure Sophie and Lola appreciated it.

I’m still laughing about weight loss and am glad you reminded me about the deer leg post too! My expensive weight loss programme isn’t working either… maybe I need to join in with the zoomies rather than wandering along gazing at wildlife and sunsets!
