Delilah's a Diva…Day Three Hundred, Twenty

October 16, 2011 By Jodi

Sampson and Delilah basically took the summer off from daycare.  They still had lots of interactions with other dogs, via our walks and our impromptu training classes, but they didn’t go to daycare and hang out with their buddies for nine hours a day.

Since they started daycare again last month there have been a couple of amusing stories.

There was the day Sampson disciplined a puppy rather harshly and needed a timeout. 🙁

That same day Delilah almost went over the counter when the pizza delivery person came; and I don’t think it was the pizza she was after. 🙁

Then Friday I got a call at work.

“Jodi?  This is ‘N’ from the Mellow Mutt.” “Sampson is laying in a crate sleeping, which I think is normal, but Delilah is standing in front of the crate barking.” “Is she trying to tell me something?”

She then goes on to say, “I looked at him and he’s breathing, but I don’t know if Delilah is trying to tell me something is wrong; does she do this at home?”

My head was spinning and I was thinking no, she doesn’t do that at home because he doesn’t go in his crate at home, he prefers the couch.  And why the hell am I paying money for the dogs to go to daycare if they are only going to be sleeping?

I had a customer on the line and said, “I’ll have to call you back.”

I hung up on her and handled the client, then called her right back.

“A funny thing happened after I hung up,” she said, “Sampson got out of the crate and Delilah went in, I brought him over and told him he could go in there too, so they’re both in the crate.”

That’s a true story, I swear.  Delilah will bark or whine at Sampson when he has a toy she wants or if he has had some treat and she wants to clean up after him.  One time she barked at him in the middle of the night because she wanted his spot on the bed. He got off the bed.

I’ve come to the conclusion, Delilah’s a Diva.

I’m also wondering why you’re paying for daycare if they just want to sleep in a crate all day.

Right? I talked to daycare and I’m going to drop them to half days; because it is mostly later in the day that they are sleeping.

Sometimes dogs just have to assert themselves to remain the alpha in the pack.

She is definitely the alpha! LOL

LOL Delilah sounds so much like my Riva, she does the same thing to her sister and thats why we call her Riva Diva. I think maybe Delilah and Riva were sisters in another life 😉

It’s very possible Misty! She is a hoot. Does Riva’s sister move?

No she dosn’t, she just lies there like Riva dosn’t exist. Cheyenne will even take Riva’s favorite toy and lay by it just to make her whine because she knows Riva will not take it from her. They are full sisters but so opposite of each other 🙂

PD I am not sure that it wasn’t the pizza she was after.

Yes, you might be right, she might have been trying to scare him off so he would drop the box. 😉

Something about the females. When I was deciding what sex to rescue someone told me females will be the alpha but I was certain Sampson wouldn’t let it happen…..how wrong I was.

It’s good to know that Delilah isn’t the only diva. 😉

Oh my gosh, so funny! I was getting nervous reading the post as I was afraid something was wrong with Samson, I almost didn’t want to keep reading as I didn’t want to see sad news. It really made me laugh to get to the truth! Delilah is a diva for sure, poor Samson doesn’t stand a chance LOL.

      October 17, 2011 at 1:38 pm

Oh Julie, I’m sorry! But I felt the same way when she asked me if Delilah was trying to ‘tell’ her something. I debated running right over and picking him up and bringing him to the vet!

Yes, she is a little Diva, poor Sampson gave in to her a long time ago!

That is hysterical! She is quite the diva. My friend’s lab, Lola is the same way. If I put out multiple nylabones, all the exact same. She always wants the one Sophie is chewing on. She will bark and bark at us before going over and stealing it from Sophie.

Oh I know it well. I always give the new toy to Sampson first, because that is the only chance he has of playing with it. 🙂

How does Sophie react to that?

      • Patty says

        October 18, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Depends on her mood. Some times she will take the other nylabone and ignore Lola. Other times she will chase Lola and engage in a tug of war for that one particular toy. If she is really tired, she just plops over and naps. LOL
