The Earth Moves….Day Three Hundred, Seven

October 3, 2011 By Jodi

This afternoon I decided to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather and use my lunch hour to walk the dogs.

Time is a tiny bit tight, but if I am quick and efficient I can come home, change, grab the dogs and get out for about 35 minutes.  Even with changing clothes, I can still manage to get back to work having only been absent for just about an hour.

The weather was a little on the cool side today so it was a great day for walking.

I tried to capture the beauty of the sun peeking through the trees.

Sampson was running free while Delilah was on the check cord.  I worry about her wandering too far away from me while she’s trailing the leash, because I’m afraid it will get caught on something.  There are a lot of small limbs and branches still scattered about from the hurricane we had back in August and they make for challenging navigation at different times.   Delilah has gotten hung up a couple of times; luckily for me (and her) she has been close by.  She is very calm when this happens and just stops and waits for me to untangle her.

Today I thought she had run off but I pulled out my little whistle, giving two short blasts and shouted “Come on,” and she came right back to me.  After that I held the leash until we were past the temptation spot. 🙂

In our little neck of the woods there are a couple of large boulders and the dogs love to run up there and sniff around for chipmunks.  Today I notice an area just off one of the boulders because Sampson noticed it.

His entire head was inside there and I could see the earth moving with his investigation.  Of course I called him away from there as quick as I could.  The last thing I want is a fisher or coyote to get startled by one of the dogs.

It is the biggest perk to the job! That and the flexibility; if I am a bit late my boss doesn’t care. 🙂

I wish you had that opportunity. It is a very nice area to walk the dogs in. 🙂 do you have any areas like that near you?

You’re dedicated and devoted to fit that in during lunch. I know it provides some down time for you though. Looks like a neat wilderness to walk in. Do you actually see coyotes?

No Big Al, I have not actually seen coyotes, but I’ve been told they’re around. My neighbors dog ran off and came back with half his tail missing! It is a nice break from the office drudgery to get out and get some fresh air.

Of course I would much rather be sneaking my dogs on YOUR hiking trail ;0

That looks like such a lovely place to take the dogs for a walk. Is it close to your home? We are so lucky to live in an area with a similar forest nearby. It’s great to be able to let our dogs explore at their own pace. And even greater you have such a brilliant recall! That takes a lot of work.

Yes the wooded area is right at the top of our street; less than a minute by car (which is much easier with two dogs.) There are a number of different trails and a very large field, so we have plenty of options. Some of the trails also lead down into a very popular walking trail as well as a park. I tend to just stay up in the area we are comfortable in. We are working hard on our recall. Some days she’s spot on and others, would make you sit and cry. 🙂

What a lovely way to spend your lunch. But isn’t it hard to return to the job?

I also come home for lunch and I return to the job each day telling everyone I had to sneak away because Honey wanted me to stay home for a game of tug or fetch.

It is a lovely way to spend a lunch; and I don’t want to go back. But alas, I still need to work.

Does it bother Honey when you go back? My guys are ok with it; as long as they’ve had their walk. 🙂

Beautiful spot! Your story reminded me of an unfortunate event that happened to Bailey a couple months back … poor nosy boy got the worst end of a skunk after he played hunting dog …

I would so love to do this during my lunch! My pups would love it too. I would be a tad freaked by the possiblity of a coyote though.

I think they are around more at dusk and during the night; both times I try to avoid walking. The woods also extend over a huge expanse so I’m not really sure coyotes are there all the time, still it seems best to try and be smart about it.

This sounds like such a wonderful walk! I couldn’t help but wish I was walking along with you guys, looks like a beautiful area. I had to chuckle about Samson and his “investigation,” dogs sure know how to get themselves in potential trouble spots.
So glad there were no coyotes or fishers around!

How lucky that you can enjoy nice weather and walk the dogs on your lunch hour. And how wonderful that Delilah came back on your whistle!
