What Is That?…Day Two Hundred, Twenty Three

July 11, 2011 By Jodi

I can’t figure Delilah out.  Most days she’s a pretty good girl, I mean yes she has her moments like licking the cabinets and floor and always being under your feet when you are preparing food.  She can go for long periods of time without getting into trouble.  And then one day….

While you are in your bathroom applying make-up for work, you hear it.  Smack, Smack, SMACK.  You venture out of the bathroom to find Delilah lying on her bed chewing the heck out of something.  It’s dark in the bedroom and you don’t have your glasses on, but you know she has something.

“Drop it!” you shout.  Delilah drops it.

You pick it up but you can’t see what it is, you say, “What the hell is that?”

It feels kind of hard, so you carry it out into the kitchen where there is more light and take a closer look.

Yes, it’s the stem of the banana, all that remains.

Naturally it wasn’t the only casualty that day.

What’s left of a candy wrapper and a napkin.

A crushed coolatta cup, left by the hubby in the sink.

You never know when the mood will strike.  Or what she will find.

Well at least she tried to include a serving of fruit. 🙂

But seriously, I don’t think retrievers ever get over their goat like behavior. The golden retriever we had before the Chessies once ate ornaments…glass ornaments. He had never bothered our Christmas tree for years and then one year he just went for it. He even chewed the Nativity set. No one was spared. He chewed the head off baby Jesus. He also ate an entire plastic bowl. First he ate the cat food that was in the bowl and then for dessert, the bowl. Of course both times he required vet visits……

Oh my goodness!! I can’t believe he ate glass! And still after vet visits he didn’t learn?

It’s funny because Sampson chewed a foot rest on a breakfast bar when he was a puppy, but since he has been housebroken he only chews his toys. Delilah on the other hand can be counted on to eat just about anything. One day I will make a post of all the things she has eaten (that I know about!) Thanks for sharing.

well… bananas aren’t bad for dogs, anyways. though peel-on is kind of gross seeming 😛
Gwynn is pretty good about most things, except planter pots. especially the little plastic ones that the plants originally came in. He loves them… i think it’s the way the material crinkles and crunches.

Does Gwynn eat them? Or just tear them up?

She loves bananas and it’s my bad for feeding them to her and giving her a taste of them. 🙂

He starts off just chewing on them, but as soon as it tears or breaks, he chews up the little pieces… and I’m not willing to risk that. unfortunately, he is a planter-pot ninja. Rather like the sponges he finds in our back yard, I haven’t figured out where they come from (since we keep them in a fully closed-in garage that is always left closed… and we don’t really have sponges at all, anywhere).
banana isn’t bad at all for dogs (though I’ve heard too much is a bad thing, both for dogs and for people), and Gwynn loves it too. He usually gets a few pieces off any banana someone in the house tries to eat. Unfortunately, you’ll just have to move them up further out of reach in order to save some for yourself 😛

Usually we are pretty good about keeping things out of her reach, but somehow this particular day, the banana eluded safety!

Anytime they get something hard that they begin to destroy I take it away. We can’t risk it.

I am so glad you explained what the banana stem was, I was a wee bit grossed out at first!

Dogs are crazy and when they gotta chew, they gotta chew. It’s why we can’t let Shiva roam the house when we are not at home. She is very likely to get into something that could cause her some serious harm. We have a rule as well, if it’s on the floor, it’s fair game for the dog. She knows she’s not allowed to take things off of tables and counters but the floor is a different matter. If you don’t want your stuff chewed, pick it up!

Imagine trying to figure out what it was in the dark! LOL

How do you keep Shiva from taking things off the counters, tables etc? Delilah took the banana from the counter, I would love to be able to keep her off the counter!
