Oh Deer….Day Two Hundred

June 18, 2011 By Jodi

We’ve seen deer crossing streets in the area.

We’ve seen a huge buck right outside our fenced in backyard.

We knew there was deer in the woods where we walk;  occasionally we even walk on their trails.

We have seen trees which have been stripped of bark from the rubbing of antlers.

But we’ve never actually seen a deer in the woods where we walk…until today.

I’m going to have to ask you to use your imagination here.  I would ask you to close your eyes, but then you couldn’t read the words, so try to picture this in your mind.

I’m on the trail ahead of Chet, Sampson is ahead of me, Delilah is who knows where.  The path veers to the left; Chet, Sampson and I make the turn.  We call Delilah.

I hear her coming, so I turn to look and see Delilah running flat out and about 20 feet behind her, also running is a 200 pound doe!

I stand there with my hand over my mouth and I’m thinking Sweet Jesus, if Delilah turns around and sees that deer, we will never get her back!  She will chase that deer until one of them drops!

Thankfully Delilah turned to join us and the deer continued on its way.

Afterwards I thought, maybe Delilah knew that deer was behind her and that’s why she was running!  Can you imagine what she’s thinking?  Holy shit that’s the biggest dog I’ve ever seen!

Loved this. Fell upon it by chance via “tags.”
But we’re dog lovers, too, and though we live in the suburbs, we are surrounded by deer!
Anyway, I loved this little story and honestly, when you first described the dog with the deer behind it, I really DID think the deer might be chasing the dog who was aware of it – ah, who knows? But a great scene nonetheless!

Thank you! At first it didn’t dawn on me that she might be chased by the deer, but we will never know. 🙂

Oh my word!!! Died laughing at this! Your rigting puts the reader right in the middle if your post…often right in the middle of Delilah’s thoughts! I’m still laughing!!

Thank you! Somtimes I really struggle with the writing and feel like it is inadequate. I’m glad you enjoy it.

LOL I also thought the deer was chasing Delilah and it cracked me up, like a mother bear or in this case a mother doe chasing the dog away from her fawn or something! And Delilah came running like hell to her parents to save her from the Mad Doe! hahaha

OMG I was just standing there in shock! Chet says he doesn’t think the deer was chasing her, but I did. Then I thought, WTF would we have done had the deer turned when she did? We certainly weren’t prepared for that!
