When you have a food motivated Labrador, you have to be super vigilant…because when opportunity knocks, the opportunist will answer the door.
You know…that time you were cooking dinner and getting the dog’s food ready, and you went downstairs to get a loaf of bread out of the freezer, and you heard a thump when you got downstairs, and thought, what has that damn dog got into now, and you grabbed the bread and hurried upstairs only to find the damn dog licking the EMPTY bowl of dog food you thought you put on top of the refrigerator?
Yeah, that.
When opportunity knocks, the Labrador will answer the door.

OH MY DOG!!! I’m sorry, but I have to laugh at the thought of the food bowl on the floor. Callie was my counter surfer. And she pulled many an item down to the floor. Now that she’s in Heaven, everything stays where it belongs. Shadow has never been a counter surfer; and Ducky’s legs are too short to let her reach that high.

I think my cat bro Bert may be a Labrador in disguise. He knows Mom will make mistakes and he is always there to steal whatever food is left unattended…even if it is for about one second!

The Barley and Rye will answer, too. There have been a couple times when I’ve left the gate to the kitchen open because I was just going to get a new roll of paper towels from the basement and I had both dogs coming down with me–and then they still beat me up the stairs and steal something! They’re so glad they have Delilah to understand the kind of torture we put them through when we keep food away 😉

If I’m going to leave food unattended in the kitchen, I put it inside the microwave. As long as Luke doesn’t figure out how to open that, we should be OK. LOL

What the mouses?
How the mouses does a doggy get way up there on top of a refrigerator? Talk about motivated. Oh my mouses. Wow! I never knew doggies could jump so high. purrs
Jodi says
No, no! I’m sorry if it wasn’t clear. I thought I had put the food on top of the fridge, but it turns out I left it on the counter. 🙁
Seville at Nerissa's Life says
Oops! Sorry ’bout that. I was sure I had read this post before but didn’t see my comment. I didn’t realize there were two sets of ’em. Sorry for the duplication. PURRS.
Hmmm… For cats, counters are even easier to get onto the fridges but, of course, we can’t just reach up to ’em. We have to jump. Well Andy can reach up to the counter with a paw but that long-haired marmie half-Coon freakish giant can pretty much reach anythin’. MOUSES!

The collies never miss an opportunity either! Their motto? “Life’s short, so steal that cookie!”
Monika & Sam says
Bwahahaha!! Good lord, she doesn’t look like she has springs on her paws! Have you thought about the Olympics if she can jump that high?

You made me chuckle. We had a black lab years ago and she would have done the same thing. I remember leaving bread out to dry for my rabbits then it would be gone and I would think I forgot to put some out until it happened a few times 🙂
Jackie Bouchard says
Hysterical. That girl’s no dummy! And, see, now *this* is why it had to be a Lab for my book “What the Dog Ate.” (Rita *sometimes* will countersurf – but usually only if we have burgers or steak. She’s never stolen anything. She’s MOSTLY a very good girl.) 🙂

Looks like my last comment was eaten by gremlins–maybe Labrador gremlins. 🙁
Anyway, I think you need a Lab cam for your kitchen.

It’s been a steep learning curve with Bear Cat. When I brought him inside, I wasn’t used to a counter cruiser – and anything left out was swiftly claimed (food, pens, blister packs of medications …). He even got his back paws burned trying to filch food on the stove. No food can be left out anywhere. He’s licked Oreos, downed the Bodacious Onion dip that was WAY too hot for me, peanut butter … the only thing he turns his nose up at is dairy (egg, cheese, milk … though he digs ice cream) – which was new to me too because Kitty was a dairy fiend and would eat an entire package of cheese if you let her.

I love the tag line, ” When opportunity knocks a Labrador will answer the door”. I have an opportunistic, food loving feline but when someone knocks on the door he runs downstairs.

Scarlett must have the heart of a lab….she grabs every opportunity to steal food, without fail.
