Last Monday was a bit of a wash, it was a long ass day that turned into a long ass night.
Without boring you with the minutia of my life, let’s just say Hubby was late getting home, which left us eating late, which left us pitching a tent in the dark.
Don’t ask.
Needless to say, time got away from us and when I finally noticed Delilah’s pitiful ‘you missed my snack look’ it was after 10:00. I immediately obliged her, then went to give Sampson his.
I couldn’t find him. He had been in the dining room the last time I saw him. I figured he got tired and went to bed.
But he hadn’t.
I searched every room in the house.
Nothing.
I went outside and called him.
I got squat.
I walked to the other end of the house where he likes to lay and pout.
He wasn’t there.
I went back in the house and checked every room again.
Every. Single. Room.
I checked the door to my mom’s, it was shut.
I went back outside. “I can’t find Sampson” I said with a tinge of panic in my voice.
“Did you check every room?”
I rolled my eyes, and my inner bitch said, “What the fuck cowboy? This isn’t my first rodeo you know.”
My outer bitch said, “Of course I did!”
Hubby stopped what he was doing and went storming through the house checking every room.
No dog.
He went outside and called.
Still no dog.
“Did you check your mom’s?”
“No, the door was shut.”
Heart pounding in my chest I leaned over the railing to make sure the door was shut, just as my mother opened it and let the little asshole up the stairs.
Apparently he doesn’t have opposable thumbs to open the door, but that whip of a tail of his is enough to close it.
You’ve done this right? Lost your dog in your own house, I mean like, it’s not just me is it?

When I started reading your post, I was like ‘oh no, please have a happy ending!’
And don’t worry you are not the only one! We have a fairly big back yard and once I thought I had lost Cody! I got home one afternoon and he wasn’t at the window waiting for me. I looked every where, calling him as I went – nothing. After what felt like forever (but was probably 15 minutes) I spotted his little tailing wagging from the door of the shed. I don’t know what he was so interested in but I had found him! 🙂

What is it with husbands that go, “What do you mean X is lost? Are you sure?” Mine did the same damn thing when my cats opened the screen door and escaped and again when I momentarily lost Zoe in the dark on an off leash potty walk. It was infuriating! I was like “No shit, sherlock! I wouldn’t be asking for help if I wasn’t sure!!!” Pffff husbands!! 😀

I hope Mom doesn’t read this. She will for sure start putting me on my leash in the house!!
Love and licks,

Seems to be a common issue right now. Leroy was lost in the house on My Brown Newfies yesterday, and last week I had Bailie who was lost and found in a bush in the yard. It is not easy for humans 😉

hahaha, I locked Glory in the basement storage room the other day and wondered where the hell she was.

Well your mothers dog is certainly living the good life now, isn’t he? I still remember when Laika ran off a few years back. It was 6am and completely dark out – as we got outside she spotted something and took off – her damn leash was out of my hand before I knew what was happening. Looking around for 15 minutes and not being able to find her I panicked and came inside to enlist my boyfriends help.
The both of us spent another 20 minutes or so checking w/our neighbors, ect. Couldn’t find her. I came back to the yard to do another check & heard some faint whimpering. Her leash had gotten caught around some trees in the woods out back. I walked by that damn stop at least 5 times calling her name & she was silent. I guess after awhile she realized we really had no clue where the hell she was. I hate mornings like that.

I have done it more times than I care to admit. It’s awful isn’t it! It’s when you check the usual spots, and they aren’t there so you check them again, and again! Each time feeling the panic rising!

I can’t say I have, but our house is pretty small. I’m glad you didn’t get too much stress from all that.

Totally and more than once. I laughed out loud throughout your entire post because I have been there, done that, bought the tee-shirt to prove it. I often wonder why Sam is still devoted to me as much as he is. 🙂

Mom always accuses us of being missing. She should have looked in the kitchen first

LOL! Jen at My Brown Newfs just wrote about the same thing! (great minds and all that…or just naughty dogs)…so I’ll just copy/paste my comment here…(’cause I’m all about recycling dontcha know 😉 )
Many years back, we had a very similar incident with Wilson. He was still a young guy and somehow he managed to shut himself into the walk-in closet in our bedroom. Of course we didn’t know that and the panic ensued. While he was happily taking a nap in the dark, we were running the neighborhood screaming his name. Not sure what eventually prompted us to look in the closet, but it was a huge relief when we found him

I can’t count the times I’ve searched for one of my little guys just to have them right behind me all the time.

hahahahahaha!!!! That reminds me of a time when my hubby was driving home, and he called me. He had asked if my one dog Koda was here, I said ummm yea, duh, of course he is here, where else would he be? He said because I swear I just saw him walking around with some guy. I literally had to get up and look for him because I didn’t see him laying where he usually does. Luckily he was laying out in front of the air conditioner, but it did scare me for a moment hahaha!

Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom says
Until I realized where Ducky likes to chill-out, I used to “lose” her in the house too. Several years ago Sam built an end table for the living room using the maple from an old bed frame that his parents had in their home. It sits on one end of the couch and my recliner is in front of it, at a 90-degree angle to the arm of the couch. One of the many times when hubby was in one of his grumpier moods, Ducky his under the table. I was looking all over for her — couldn’t imagine where she had gone because both bedrooms were gated off — then, as I was about to go back downstairs, I saw that sweet little black tail sticking out from under the table. Oh, there you are! You silly goose! I got down on my hands and knees, and coaxed her out. She stuck close to me — as in the corner of the couch next to my chair — the rest of the evening. Now, whenever we can’t see Ducky, I reach my hand down to the floor. Most times, she’ll lick my hand and then come out of hiding. 🙂

Yeah, I’ve had those panicky moments too–most recently a few days ago. I found Honey sleeping on the floor next to my sister’s guinea pigs.
It’s always the good ones that get you the most scared. Because when they disappear, you know it’s gotta be something terrible.
Jan K says
Oh no, it’s definitely not you! I have shut the dogs in the pantry and the large closet downstairs. They can be really quiet sometimes and you don’t even notice them following you into a room!
Hailey and Zaphod says
I lost a cat in my own house once. Well, he got outside and was under the deck all night because he was scared. I had a heart attack when I couldn’t find him but there he was dirty but safe.
It is scary when we think we lost them!
Rebekah says
Hahahaha!! I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing with you…
Love that I’m not the only one who refers to one of my dogs as an asshole!

It’s so easy to get bipeds in a panic! This doesn’t happen often with me, but there have been a number of occasions where the bipeds are frantically searching for a cat in our house. When they’re thinking straight they ask me to find the cat, I use my nose.

Of course I’ve lost my dog in my house…lol! It was Thumper, my red Lab. Something woke me up in the middle of the night, and I got up to investigate. I found Lightning. He’s my shadow. I looked for Thumper in his favorite spot on the couch. Not there. I looked for him in his favorite spot under the dining room table. Not there. I checked the kitchen, the pantry, upstairs, the back yard. I was panicking. I listened. I heard nothing. Then I checked the only place I hadn’t checked – the garage. And there he was. Sitting in the garage in the pitch black of night (no windows in there either). He stood up, hung his head, tucked his tail, and walked into the house. Guess he was embarrassed? I have no idea how he got there, but I was SOOOOO relieved to find him. I love your posts – always funny and real.

Great story! I have to admit that I’ve never lost my dog in my own house 🙂 But it sounds like a hoot!

Oh my gosh, that’s kind of like when you put your purse somewhere different in the car than you normally do and suddenly you panic thinking that you left it somewhere, lol!

I lost Bentley one day and went into a panic. He had gone to sleep in my closet and I closed the door. He was still sleeping when I found him after a massive search! LOL! I’m glad yours turned out fine.

I haven’t lost the dog in the house, but one morning (I think it was a Saturday) I got up and did my normal morning stuff. Eventually I noticed no Thunder. Thunder Thunder where could he be? I called hubby. He decided to take him to work with him and left before I got up. Yes there was momentary panic.
