We’ve got snow. Lots and lots of snow. Lately it seems every two, three or four days we get more snow.
Sunday night we got about six more inches of snow.
We have so much snow we have no place to put it. I’m not complaining per se because our friends to the north have more than we do, I’m just saying each time we get snow, the snow banks get bigger and bigger.
Most of the snow banks in our neighborhood are taller than I am.
So you can understand my hesitancy to be dragged into a snow bank.
At first it was just Delilah, which is understandable. Lord knows THAT girl would swim the Mississippi if she thought there was a flake of tuna on the other side.
But then Sampson started doing it too. This had me puzzled.
Of course, Delilah usually comes up with something, but she’s so damn quick, I could never figure out what she’s digging out of there.
At first I thought it was popcorn, because I saw something (in the brief moment before Delilah’s gnashing teeth gobbled it up) that resembled popcorn, and I thought, this is cool. It’s like one of the lands depicted in one of the books in the Wizard of Oz series. Where it snowed popcorn!
But then something happened and I had to rethink that theory.
I took the dogs out in the yard. Delilah per usual was snooping about for something, anything she could eat.
All of a sudden she launched herself over a bank of snow and came up with a hamburger bun in her mouth.
Naturally I wrestled it away from her and then thought, where the hell did this bread come from?
Then it clicked.
Birds. Damn birds. We have some really big crows that hang around in our neighborhood and one neighbor up the street who has a number of bird feeders in her yard. I’m suspecting she also throws bread out.
Then I put two and two together, my dogs are probably finding bread in the snow banks!
It makes me feel slightly better to know my dogs are snarfing for food, but it leaves me with a question. If you’re going to throw bread out for the birds, wouldn’t you break it up? I mean, sure those big ass crows can carry a loaf of italian bread, but what about the Robins?
Oh right, there aren’t any freaking Robins, because it won’t stop snowing long enough for Spring to get here!

hehehehe it was the bread all along. When I feed bread to my chickens I break it up but when John’s mom throws bread out she throws the whole loaf of homemade bread out for her birds and guess who gets it yes bird Nellie who goes up there scavenging for scrapes and she finds a big one.

We are impressed with their ability even to find bread. Gosh that sounds like too much snow now. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly

Smartest. Doggies. Ever. Once I found potato chips under the snow. It took a few days of digging in the same spot, which Mom didn’t understand, but I found them. Soggy, frozen potato chips! Delicious. The bag was there too. Mom said the word, “Disgusting.” Proof positive that it was a high quality find….
Love and licks,
Cupcake

Damn birds! They would bring their crap to your snowbanks! Hope they don’t start carrying poop to the area too!

The birds and squirrels bring food into our yard but we try our best not to let the dogs eat it. Lately I have heard of reports where food items are poisoned and the dogs get sick or worse. I am not chancing it although it has not happened in my neighborhood. But you just never know. We work on leave it.

I worry about that too, especially if walking in public parks, but I guess it could happen even in your own neighborhood. I try to be more watchful since dogs can gobble something up pretty quick and you might not even know they ate something.

I personally would break up the bread, but that’s just me.

And what about the chickadees and tufted titmouse(ice?)?? They usually stick around year-long, just like the crows, grackles, and blue jays.

Don’t eat the stuffs you find in SNOW…. they could be COVERED with Snow Freak Eggs that would Hatch inside of you… causing you to POOP OUT…. snow Freaks… Just sayin.

That last caption cracked me up!
Oh yes, food dropped down from birds. My dog Shadow used to completely submerge her head into the wading pool just to get to the bread and even dog food dropped in there by birds. I used to think they were leaving her offerings so she’d quit trying to capture them. It didn’t really work cause she killed a fair number of birds in her time. I hated that she was eating bread and dog food with unknown ingredients (she was allergic to a LOT of foods) – so I would sometimes fish them out before she got to them. The bread would get so disgustingly soggy it was like trying to grab hold of a really big booger. [shudder]

Don’t mean to sound like a heartless killjoy, I mean, I realize birds have to eat and often depend on human benefactors…I get that. But it sounds like your neighbor has a close relative who lives in my neighborhood who is constantly throwing out slices of bread next to the sidewalk which only feeds the neighborhood foxes and coyote, not the birds. But then complains when there are no birds, notwithstanding the whole winter is still hanging on my its fingertips thing and the migratory birds haven’t arrived yet. Some people just don’t realize they are part of the problem. Anyone with a 4 legged ‘Hoover’ knows that food along the walk can be dangerous to both walkers and walk-ees. Good luck finding space to shovel any fresh snow. Paws crossed that Spring marches in like a lion…and soon! 🙂

Haha..we have the same problem here – not the snowbanks thank god, but birds dropping tidbits in the yard.

Oh, I remember how it was walking our beagle in the snow. So much food – everywhere. One thing that always amazed me was the sheer number of chicken bones she used to find when we would walk – but that was not in the snow, that was after we moved to CA. I think some of the gardeners and home construction workers were just tossing the bones after eating their lunch or something. So gross – and dangerous! Luckily Rita is PICKY and (other than dead gophers) has almost never found something to eat while we’re on a walk!
Anyway, thanks for the laugh. Love the caption on that last photo!

You have to admire those powerful noses. It seems to me the snow amplifies normal smells even beyond what dogs can usually pick up. And I agree, sticking your nose in a snow bank is a great way to regulate moods!

What do you do with all that snow!

Those doggies of yours are smart! It’s snowing again here right now, and we’re supposed to get another 4-8 inches by Thursday night. I heard a spring bird this morning, but it probably just rolled its eyes and flew away now. 😉 Our snow banks are huge too – some are a good 20+ feet high – and our roads got so narrow that the plows started dumping loads of snow on our sidewalks and front lawns. What a winter it’s been!

Oh no! Naughty bread snatchers! LOL!! We had a neighbor that would do that too! She would feed the deer and coyotes! It was insane and drove us all crazy.
On a side note, I don’t think bread is even good for birds! There are signs everywhere here that says to please not feed it to them because it makes them sick.
jan says
I think the birds are messing with you. When you look up, do you see them chortling on the utility lines?
Retro rover says
Ohhhh bread in the snow at least one upside to the winter

We used to throw bread out for the birds (and no, we didn’t always break it up…I always figured they could peck at it). But our beagle Kobi was onto that and if he could get near the bird feeders, he would steal the bread!
