My Dog Is a Doofus

January 29, 2015 By Jodi

Remember how my mom fell and ended up in the hospital?  Then the hospital released her and sent her to a convalescent home, and they in turn gave her physical therapy and sent her home two weeks ago.

One of the things that happens when you return home from a convalescent/rehabilitation facility is you need to be monitored by the visiting nurses.

Yesterday I came home at lunch to give Delilah her Benadryl and to walk the dogs.  After we got all suited up we walked out the door and started down the driveway only to discover one of the nurses was parked in the driveway.

Sampson of course noticed her right away.

Someone is here! I'm pretty sure it's because they want to see me.

Someone is here! I’m pretty sure it’s because they want to see me.

I knew I could never get the dogs past her car, especially if she was sitting in it.  Sampson is so excited to see people, he would literally drag me down the driveway.  In fact, Tuesday on our walk we past a woman and her dog and he dragged me across the street in an attempt to greet them.

I noticed the nurse was talking on her cell phone, so I turned around and brought the dogs back into the house and went outside to wait.

I was on my lunch and while my boss wouldn’t be miffed if I came back late, I still don’t like to take advantage.  I waited a couple of minutes and was just getting to the point where I was going to knock and tell her to either get out of the car and into the house or move her car from my driveway, when she got out of the car.

She hollered up to me, “Do you have to walk the dog?”

“Yes” I replied.

“You could have brought them down.”

“No, my dog is a doofus, he thinks everyone is here to see him, he would drag me down the driveway.”

True story.  He checks every car we pass to see if there is someone in them.  He gets a hitch in his giddy up when he notices a person either in their yard or walking.  He roos at them as he approaches and tries to drag me over to say hello.

Thank Dog she's not whining about me.

Thank Dog she’s not whining about me.

He really is a doofus.

Silly boy. He just wants to visit. The person might have a treat!

At least he loves people, think what it would be like if he wanted to rip everyone apart he saw in his driveway? We go pretty nuts to over anyone visiting. Mom always has to make sure we don’t get near cars as we may jump and scratch the paint and it would be big trouble!

Our beagle Kobi was like that. We had one neighbor who always stopped to give him a treat, and the mailman did it as well if he saw us walking, and from then on he expected every car to stop and deliver a treat! He’d look so sad when the cars just drove by. I miss that. Sheba is our only dog now that actually wants to see people, but she’s a bit more hesitant about it than Kobi was.

Cricket thinks anyone who comes to the house is there to throw her ball for her. She’ll bark at some people, but when she’s done with that she runs and gets her ball!

I think he must descend from my dog, Copper, that I had some years ago. That dog loved people in a way that was, quite simply, unnatural. One time I dropped the leash (on accident) and he ran like the dickens to the nearest person he found and snuggled up next to her. I wasn’t sure I’d get him back.

Here’s to Sampson, a doofus in a long line of doofuses. And Emma is right – be grateful he wants to run to people because of love, not because he is on a murderous mission. 😉

WE think it is GRAND that the Doofus is so Friendly and Loves Peeps so much… It is like being a Pawsonal GREETER… butt BETTER than the ones they used to have at Walmart…

Sampson is the dog version of a politician or maybe a beloved statesman or possibly a used car salesman.
