This ‘N That Thursday – June 20, 2013

June 20, 2013 By Jodi

Today we join our friends at the 2 Brown Dawgs blog for This ‘N That Thursday.  You know, This ‘N That Thursday, A little of this and a little of that and everything in between…

Many thanks to our friends at the 2 Brown Dawgs Blog.

Lyme Disease

Yesterday I wrote about the day my grandchildren spent with me.  It was a warm day and my granddaughter had her shirt off.  As I sat next to her during dinner, I noticed a tiny black mark surrounded by lightly irritated skin on her side.

I said to Hubby, “I think she has a tick.”

Of course he went and got our tick key and the rubbing alcohol and removed it.  He said, “I don’t think it’s a tick, it came off too easy.”

I put some antibiotic cream on the spot and told my daughter to keep an eye on it.  Last Thursday my granddaughter went to the Dr. because the spot had grown to the size of a quarter.  The Dr. said it was a spider bite.

Bullshit I thought, spiders don’t attach themselves to your skin.  (Unless they’re vampire spiders and then I have no idea what they do.)

Saturday the mark had taken on the distinction of what is commonly known as a target. The Dr. diagnosed Lyme Disease and my granddaughter is currently on a three week course of antibiotics.

Site of tick bite.

Site of tick bite.

The Dr. said my granddaughter should be fine.  But it will always be something in the back of our minds when she isn’t feeling well.

According to the CDC, a tick has to be attached for 36 to 48 hours in order to transmit the Lyme Disease.  This tick was tiny, about the size of the head of a pin.

Just a warning, make sure you check yourself, your kids, and pets.

We’re very lucky we caught this early.

Sampson has a lump.   It’s under his right arm.  About two years ago I found a lump on his side, we went to the vet and had it aspirated, it turned out to be a fatty deposit, which is fairly common in Labradors.

I called to schedule an appointment.  My vet recently had elbow surgery and isn’t seeing dogs over 40 pounds until the first week in July.  The other two vets in the practice that I would normally see are on vacation next week, so I decided to wait until the first week in July.  Of course I’ll keep my eye on it and if it begins to grow I will bring him in and see whoever is there.

I’m praying (and I’d appreciate any prayers you want to throw our way too) that it is just another fatty deposit.  I will keep you posted.

Mr. Linky

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the problem I had with the Linky Tool.  What happened was someone was joining the blog hop and beat me and the co-host at getting their link hooked up.  I went to my Linky Tool dashboard and saw, manage links in hop, so I clicked on it and moved the link to third position.  The problem was that everyone who joined the hop, pushed this persons post further and further down the list, so they were always last.

I finally wrote to Mr. Linky again and asked about managing the links and he told me I couldn’t do it.

Um…..sorry Mr. Linky but clearly I did it.  You may want to look at your product again.

As of right now I’m almost positive I won’t be renewing my subscription with Mr. Linky.

Follow-up Friday

Follow-up Friday is being co-hosted this week by Kari from Hound Girl.  She will have the link up and on her blog tomorrow morning.  We will be participating in K-9 Kamp so our Follow-Up Friday post will go up on Saturday again.

If anyone is interested in co-hosting, it’s not that hard and I’d love to share the linky love. 🙂

Thanks so much for participating in TNT. Scary about your granddaughter. Was the tick attached as long as they say it takes to transmit the disease? I am unclear on timing. Was the disease transmitted in a shorter time frame?

I hope Sampson is OK. Our Golden had an assortment of lumps in his old age. All fatty tumors.

Wow…thank goodness you saw that…maybe it was a nymph , a baby tick, and thats why it came off so easy. I had a chigger in florida, also baby tick..it was on me but not really attached..wiped right off….I also had a tick in florida and a fever with unknown cause. Didnt know it was a tick, but as soon as it was removed the fever went away. Went to the dr…there is something called tick fever…learn something new every day!!! Thats is some rash from the tick site..always thought it was a small rash. Payers for sampson..hoping its a fatty tumor

Getting a diagnosis early for Lyme’s is imperative and it sounds like your granddaughter should be fine. Ticks are such horrid things. Sending positive thoughts down the ether for Samson 😉

Yikes we are so lucky re ticks over here in town. We have our paws tightly crossed for Samson. We sincerely hope it is just a fatty lump. We hope your granddaughter is better now. Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

Prayers and healing energy are on the way … probably is just a fatty tumor, nothing to worry about. But I worry too — must be our maternal instincts … healing energy for your granddaughter, too!! Bless her sweet little heart!!

Gosh, Lyme disease! Great that you found that thing quickly and got her treated.

Every older dog I’ve had, lab mix or not, has developed a bunch of lipomas. I’m betting that’s what Sampson has. More of him to love!

Those rotten ticks! Hope your granddaughter will be okay! I have had a few lumps, turns out that my breed gets them and then they just go away in a few months but they still scare mom and she keeps a “feel” on them. We did have 2 tested and they were nothing. My older sister has one on her chest but it is also nothing, mom keeps a “feel” on it too. Lumps are scary and we hope that Sampson’s is nothing.

All of my dogs of various breeds have developed lumps as they grew older. They are always scary, but not one has been problematic. We’ll think good thoughts.

I’m sending some prayers over that Sampson’s lump is just another fatty thing. And I am so sorry about your granddaughter and Lyme’s Disease. I know it is manageable, but to get it at such a young age is just not fair. We all need to be very aware of ticks…they are so tiny but can cause such chaos.

    June 20, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Oh my goodness we are hoping your granddaughter will be ok, that is so scary!!! Also hoping Sampson is ok but since he had a fatty tumor before, that is probably what it is!

  11. Marcie says

    June 20, 2013 at 1:51 pm

Sounds great that you started checking on that so early. Ticks are such nuisances.
Hoping the best for your dog! Two of my dogs both had the fatty deposits as well. Fortunately it never turned out to be anything more. I’m sure the waiting no fun for you right now.

    June 20, 2013 at 2:42 pm

Prayers and paws crossed for the lump. And huge hugs to your granddaughter and family!

Yikes about the tick! Hope she’s fine.

And we are sending our best pawsitive thoughts that the lump is just a fatty lump. With the history of our last 2 dogs I freak out over lumps. I know you’ll keep a close eye. Also go in if it suddenly gets smaller. Mast cell tumors can change size and actually get smaller, then grow again.

Weird about the Linky dude. Is there another alternative out there??

Lyme and lumps. Ugh. Prayers and healing thoughts are headed your way.

Here’s to hoping it is a fatty deposit. Aren’t those things weird? Are they designed just to freak us out?

My word – that’s quite the “target” – isn’t it? Hope your granddaughter will be fine. Is there anything you can put on her or yourselves to prevent ticks from latching on? Those things are evil.

So glad you granddaughter is on antibiotics and she should be fine. Good for you to spot that and get it taken care of early. Lyme disease is only spread by deer ticks that are like you said very very small so hard to notice. I will be praying for Sampson’s lump to be a fatty tumor, I know he is your heart dog so wishing him well. Labs are notorious for getting fatty tumors so I hope that is all that it is. I will love to co-host again for you in the future when you need someone so give me a shout. Have a great night.

Your poor granddaughter! My daughter had Lyme disease too. Is she feeling any of the symptoms?

I hope the lump is benign! Our old golden had lots of benign lumps, must be a retriever thing…

We have you an award, it’s on our blog. 🙂

Praying for you and Sampson, that the lump is nothing but a fatty deposit. I know how scary this time is, whilst you wait for results.

Sounds like what we call seed ticks. Not good. Darn things are so small, they’re very easy to miss. Hope your granddaughter will be okay. Ditto with Sampson!

    Hi Y’all,

Know Lyme intimately. Had it back before it was thought to be in the south. I couldn’t walk across the room. The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. Finally I was referred to a rheumatologist. I was the 3rd case reported in our area. It’s easily curable if treated. If left to linger like mine you will always have after effects.

Sending prayers and paw power your way!

Holy smokes Jodi! As soon as I saw that ring ring on her side I thought Lyme Disease! So glad it was caught early! These darn ticks are going to be huge issue this year!
I’m being tested for Lyme disease right now, although I don’t think it’s likely because I haven’t found a tick on me or the dogs recently but the doc is being careful since I’ve had a few weird symptoms.
Prayers for Sampson-bet ya your a right that it’s just another fatty lump!

Yikes on the tick bite! I hate those little devils!

You know, after hearing that the Linky is really bad about slowing page loads, I’m rethinking posting them on the blog. It’s a neat tool, but for mobile devices, it can really clog things up.

Oh gosh Lyme disease and a lump…not a good week at all… Spider bites are really nasty…had one that abscessed…ick! I guess that was me who got pushed down the list…it didn’t bother me but I’m amazed that they told you it couldn’t happen…how strange

  26. Donna says

    June 22, 2013 at 12:34 pm

Wow Jodi…that’s some “spider bite” . You always have to be your own advocate, don’t you. Actually glad she got the classic ring so she could be treated right away. Hopefully that’s the end of it!

Good luck with Sampson. Hoping for a Lipoma. His twin has many….
