Monday Mischief Delilah Style

December 10, 2012 By Jodi

Last Christmas after feeding and walking the dogs, Hubby and I sat on the couch eating chocolate drizzled kettle corn and playing Donkey Kong on the Wii.

It was a very relaxing, enjoyable morning.

I haven’t seen the chocolate drizzled kettle corn since then, until the last time I was at Trader Joe’s. It was cocoa drizzled kettle corn.  Semantics, it’s still chocolate right?

Hubby has a habit of eating a snack on the couch and leaving the empty package on the table between the two seats.

(Personally I think putting a pull down table on a couch is the dumbest idea Bob’s Discount Furniture ever had, but I’m sure some people probably use it responsibly.  Sadly it doesn’t work in our house, it just becomes another flat surface that gets covered with stuff.)

I’m sorry, I digress.

Delilah has a habit of snooping about on the surface of the table to see if anyone has left anything edible up there.

Which is how it came to be that I came out of the bathroom and found this.

You like chocolate, why can’t I?

She wasn’t one bit contrite.

I sent Hubby a text asking how much popcorn was left in the bag.

He said not much, maybe a couple of handfuls.

Um…that didn’t help me much.  There is a BIG difference between my handful and Hubby’s handful.

I called the vet, it was just before 7:00 am.  My vet’s office doesn’t open until 8:30 but the vet is available after 7:00 if you call the answering service.

I asked them to send a message over to the vet as soon as they could.

The vet called me back at 7:06.

“So you’re kids are getting into trouble?”

“Only one, Dr. B.  Only one.”

She then reassured me that for her size, Delilah would probably have to eat two full size candy bars for them to make an impact.

She would if she had the chance.

Oh no! Bright side, it was only drizzled with chocolate right? I am planning a trip to Trader Joes this week, I will have to look for that. 🙂

Actually I like the one I got at Sam’s Club better than Trader Joe’s but it’s popcorn and chocolate, so it’s pretty good!

Oh Delilah! My kids have a habit of leaving chips and stuff laying around on the end tables, never fails that someone gets into it, and it’s usually the Beagle!

Oh yeah, I rate Beagles right up there with Labs! 🙂

Monty would eat the bag, Sam would eat the popcorn. You just can’t convince them it is bad for them.

Dogs like the sweet stuff too, unfortunately. Good thing it was just a little chocolate in a big dog.

Jodi – I laughed aloud at this – “Only one, Dr. B. Only one.”
Glad she didn’t eat enough to get herself sick, even though she would have if she could.

Cocoa Drizzled Popcorn sounds divine. It’s 9am and I think Mom’s in the kitchen trying to figure out how to make some for breakfast right now.

    How scary!

I’ll admit that I’ve cut way down on the amount of chocolate that comes into our house, just because I worry about things like this.

Can you blame her? It is delicious! It’s not her fault anyways. . . hubby should know better!! I’m sure Cali would have done the same thing – She is CRAZY for popcorn!!

If it’s not one, it’s the other. 😛 We have a rule about things being left out like that. If you leave something related to food on the table and leave the room, it’s fair game for the dog. I try to be very careful but of course mistakes are made. Luckily Garbage Guts hasn’t been ill from anything she has ingested during her food snooping yet! Hopefully Delilah is just as lucky.

I freak out if the collies get even one M&M…even though I KNOW that small quantity couldn’t hurt, I still worry.

Oh Delilah I think you and Riva are sisters at heart! Riva once ate half a pan of fudge brownies and didn’t even get a tummy ache and I found her scrounging for more later 😉

  17. Jen says

    December 10, 2012 at 4:57 pm

Oh Delilah. She was probably thinking “Oh, that was totally worth it.”

I have had chocolate drizzled kettle corn, you see. I’d’ve liked it better freshly made, I think, but it was all right.

We had an Old English Sheepdog who finished of half a box of chocolates one Christmas day. The vet said to watch her for any signs of distress. That’s what he always said, but there were none. Scary day though

I used to leave my work bag on the floor every day when I got home. During my last couple weeks at an old job, a couple of co-workers gave me a GIANT Hershey’s Kiss. It went in my work bag. My bag got left on the floor.
The next morning there was foil scattered around the living room, but not a piece of chocolate anywhere. We were pretty certain Moree had gotten all of it, but it was possible he shared with Smokey.
After talking with the vet, we stayed home from work that day and kept an eye on the dogs for any signs of toxicity. But they were fine.
However, I don’t leave my work bag on the floor anymore.

Hey Sampson, Hey Delilah, Jetty here. Hi Miss Jodi.

OMD, thank goodness D’s ok… so did we ever tell you about the time Koko ate … ?

Guess we’ll have to write that post soon! We think Hubby deserved a teensy naughty speech for that one… although, he probably worried as much as Mom did when Koko ate… (she was ok, too.)

BTW, Mom said the payment went out this a.m. and wanted to thank you again for all your hard work on the calendar.

Reminds me of the time one of the kids left a bag of M&Ms on a living room table. We came home to empty bag on floor and Sherman (lab mix) looking for more. Thankfully, he had no ill effects… other than discovering how much he wanted more M&Ms. The next time he got M&Ms was many years later…. as he rode on the front seat between us as we drove to the vets. He was then 14, had survived one stroke, but had another and it was time. He LOVED the M&Ms. 🙂
