Blogville Dogs and Their Rescue Cause

October 23, 2012 By Jodi

There was quite a positive response to a Blogville calendar.

If we’re going to pull this off, it will have to be fairly quick.

Since the idea came so late in the year the rules will be simple, the submittal and voting process will be streamlined.

Hopefully this can become an annual fund-raiser and the next year won’t be as rushed.

As you know I love to run everything by you and have you help me in the decision process.  Partly because I’m indecisive but mostly because I want this website to feel like it’s something you’re a part of.

That being said, I threw some general rules down and welcome your input.

  • The 12 photos with the most votes will go in the 2013 Blogville Dogs and Their Rescue Cause Calendar.
  • You can submit more than one photo of your dog, however only one photo per blog, per calendar. (Example, I submit a photo of Sampson, a photo of Delilah and a photo of the two of them together.  Two of the photos are in the top twelve vote getters.  The top vote getter will go in the calendar and the other photo will not be used.)  In this manner we ensure that at least 12 different dogs (blogs) are in the calendar.
  • Good quality photos only!
  • The photo with the most votes also goes on the cover.
  • The dogs in the photo do not have to be rescued dogs.
  • The charity of the dogs in the photo however DOES have to be a rescue/shelter or animal charity.
  • Photos will be submitted over the course of one week.
  • Voting will be for one week.
  • Photos for each month will be determined randomly by draw.
  • You can use your social media tools to get people to vote for you, in other words…promote, promote, promote!

One of my favorite photos of Sampson. (This is NOT a quality photo.) 🙂

These are not ‘hard and fast, set in stone rules.’  They are a simple guideline to try to get this process going.

I know voting isn’t always the easiest way to choose, but I don’t know of any other way.  If anyone has an idea for a different process, please either send me an e-mail at stone.jodi@ymail.com or leave it in the comments.

I’ve been googling around for a customizable calendar, right now it looks like the price will go for about $15 per calendar, which should include ALL costs.  But in order to get an accurate cost I need to know approximately how many calendars are needed.  If you’re interested in purchasing a Blogville Calendar can you please let me know in the comment section and tell me how many you’d be interested in.

Oh and by the way, those of you who offered to help, let me know what you are willing to do. “-)

Did I leave anything out?  If I did, please make a note in the comment.

Sounds interesting. I already buy several “cause” calendars so I don’t think I would purchase one, but I wish you the best of luck with it. I am sure you will have great participation.

What an excellent idea Jodi. And this photo of Sampson has to be submitted! The quality isn’t terrible.

Thanks Sherri and while I love that picture, it’s really too dark to show well.

What a fabulous idea. Ok, so, have I got this right – we submit the photo’s and a shelter/rescue that the dog promotes?

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 23, 2012 at 10:54 am

Yes, more details will come out along with dates for submittals etc. But you would submit a photo and if the photo goes into the calender, it will have the pet’s name, the blog name and the name of their rescue/shelter/charity.

      Great idea!
LLCD, if you submit a picture I’ll be your campaign manager, for real.
Jodi, if there’s anything I can do to help feel free to drop me a line and I’ll give you a hand.

I’m glad you’ve got the plan in motion. When you’re ready, send me an email and I’ll be happy to blog about the finished product! I’d love to send a picture but I’m no good at asking for votes and then I feel bad my picture didn’t get enough votes!

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 23, 2012 at 10:54 am

I feel the same way you do Peggy, but I don’t know of any other way. Do you have any suggestions?

can the dog have passed the rainbow bridge for the photo I want to submit?

      Oh yes!

  7. val says

    October 23, 2012 at 10:19 am

Ok, I must have missed a post sometime…my bad!! So we submit a photo of our dog for people to vote on. Do we also supply you with a rescue that we support or are a part of??
Sounds like a great project. Look forward to more details.
    Val

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 23, 2012 at 10:57 am

Yes. You will submit a photo along with the name of your rescue (the rescue is only for the purpose of the calendar not for voting.)

It was mentioned in a This ‘N That Thursday or Follow-Up Friday post. 🙂 It was a tiny blurb.

    October 23, 2012 at 11:47 am

Thanks, I missed it as we are working on an outdoor project and just read some blogs VIA my phone. I need to pay closer attention. ;).
Can’t wait to get home and find a photo to submit.

Cool Val, I’m looking forward to it!

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 24, 2012 at 9:25 pm

Thanks Julie, depending on the calendar program we use, I may need someone to help with graphics. 🙂

  10. Mollie and Alfie says

    October 23, 2012 at 12:24 pm

That is such a great idea..I live in the UK though 🙁 We don’t have a charity, we give to lots..Mollie would of liked to enter that.. xxooxx

    Mollie and Alfie

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 24, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Of course Mollie should enter, if you have no rescue organizations in the UK pick one in the states!

  11. Kristine says

    October 23, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Hmmm, not sure what you mean by quality if the one of Sampson doesn’t count. Can’t say any of mine are professional in appearance.

One can never have too many calendars! I for sure would buy one but would buy even more if my dog was featured. 😉
I can help with whatever you need me to help with. Compiling pictures, calendar formatting, order-taking, etc, etc.

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 24, 2012 at 9:27 pm

Thanks Kristine, I will definitely need some help! I think that picture might be too dark. Sampson is in the shadow and it’s hard to see him.

  12. jet says

    October 23, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Hey Sampson, Hey Delilah, Jet here. Hi Miss Jodi.

    1. Yippee you’re going to do this…
    2. Thank you for doing this.
    3. We would buy one for sure, maybe a few more.
    4. We understand the need to vote, however, Mom won’t let me use social media yet, so, we will have less exposure. 🙁 We don’t have a better idea at the moment…we will ponder…
    5. To help more rescues, wonder if you would consider 1 K9, 1 feline photo/month?

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 24, 2012 at 9:32 pm

Thanks Jetty, I get the whole social media issue, I’m not good with it either, but you can ask your friends to tweet and facebook for you. You can definitely do blog posts about the contest and put a link in there, ask people to share, you know what I mean?

As for the feline, if the feline was in a photo with the dog that would probably be okay, but it it was just the feline it wouldn’t be a blogville dog and the name of the calendar is Blogville Dogs and Their Rescue Cause.

Maybe the next time we did it we could modify the rules.

  13. Agnes B. Bullock says

    October 23, 2012 at 12:53 pm

LOVE this idea- will buy two! Do the photos need to be of current dogs or may we submit one of an angel at the Rainbow Bridge (she came from DRNA) Where do I send the photo?

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 24, 2012 at 9:33 pm

You can absolutely submit a picture of a loved one who has gone on.

I will have an official post very soon and tell you where to send the photos.

Love this. We’ll certainly be submitting.
Have you checked out lulu.com or blurb.com for the publishing? I don’t remember exactly how much a calendar would cost, but it would allow people to order online, which always makes it a little easier.

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 24, 2012 at 9:34 pm

I hadn’t checked them out until you mentioned it. Thank you, I’ll definitely look into it!

  16. Toby says

    October 23, 2012 at 7:23 pm

Jodi-peoples, just to get this straight, will some of the money be going to the charities?

    • Jodi Stone says

      October 24, 2012 at 8:24 am

Yes. But how many rescues will depend on how many calendars are sold. Say we only sell ten and the profit is $50 I wouldn’t split that between 12 rescues.

It will all have to be tweaked, but yes the motivation is to donate to a rescue.

Thank you. I thought I read that somewhere…I’ve been a bit distracted having my doppelganger here for the week with me.
